What is New About the New Covenant?
By Drake Shelton, the Southern Israelite

1. The Levitical priesthood has been replaced by the priesthood of Melchisedek which
predates the Levitical priesthood. (Psa. 110:4, Heb. 7:11-10)
2. Atonement and Justifying Life is through Christ not animal sacrifices or obedience to
Torah.
The Gospel of the New Covenant and Paul is that atonement for sin and eternal life comes
by the perfect life and death of Yeshua Messiah. (Isa. 53, Mat. 26:28, Acts 20:28, Rom. 3:25,
Heb. 9:12, 10:19, 1 Pet. 1:19, 1 John 1:7, Rev. 1:5, Mat. 7:14, 18:8, John 3:36, 40, 6:35, 6:53-54, 14:6,
20:31, 1 John 1:1-2, 5:11-12, 12: 44-50, 2 Tim. 1:1-10, Gal. 6:8) One is brought into union with
Yeshua through faith. (1 Cor. 1:30) The way of salvation in the Old Testament, understood
as the Sinai Covenant, is that atonement for sin and justifying life, understood as life in the
land of Canaan, is through obedience to Torah. (Deut. 6:25, 30:15- 20, Lev. 16, 18:5, Ezek. 18:20-
23) And this obedience was understood as perfect and complete:
Deut. 27: 26 Cursed is every man that continues not in all the words of this law to do them:
and all the people shall say, So be it. LXX
These two covenants are then clearly distinct covenants. There was clearly a change that
happened when Yeshua came. (Heb. 5:9, 7:18-22, 8, 9:6 -15, 10:1-14).
3. Obedience to Torah is For Sanctification not Justification. (Rom. 3:31, 6, Larger Catechism
of New Saxony, Q77)
4. The Land Promise is expanded from the land of Palestine to all nations and pertains to all
the elect. (Dan. 7:13-14, Eph. 6:1-3, Isa. 56:7) The land prophecies in Deut. 30:1-14, and Ezek.
36-48 were partially fulfilled at the time of Nehemiah and totally abrogated at Mat. 8:11-12,
21:43 and replaced with Christ inheriting all nations. (Dan. 7:13-14) We cannot say Deut. 30 is
in the future because the passage says in verse 9 and 10 that they will be doing laws that
Heb. 7-10 abrogated. Moreover, Ezekiel’s Temple also introduces sin offerings done by the
Levitical Priests, which have been abrogated pursuant to Hebrews 7-10. Neh. 1:8-9
specifically points to Deut. 30 as being fulfilled in his time. Rashi even states in his
commentary on Neh. 1:9 that the prophet is here citing Deut. 30:4. In Neh. 5 the usurers are
destroyed. In Neh. 6, the enemies are overcome. In Neh. 9, Israel repents and their hearts are
circumcised. In Neh. 10 Israel swears to walk in the laws of Yah. In Neh. 13 divinely
appointed Nationalism is established. The civilization has been rebuilt. At the very least,
this is partial fulfillment. Moreover, in Deut. 10:16 and Jer. 4:4 Yah commanded Israel to
circumcise their hearts. Moreover, Josh 13-15, all of 15, 21:43-45, 22:1-2, 23:14, and 1 Kings 4:21,
all state that the land promise was fulfilled saying “Thus יהוהgave to Yisra’ĕl all the land of
which He had sworn to give to their fathers”, “Not a word failed of any good word which יהוה
had spoken to the house of Yisra’ĕl – all came in”, “You have guarded all that Mosheh the
servant of יהוהcommanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you”, “not
one word has failed of all the good words which יהוהyour Elohim spoke concerning you. All of
it has come to you, and not one word of them has failed” and finally, “And Shelomoh was
ruling over all reigns from the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of
Mitsrayim. They did task-work and served Shelomoh all the days of his life.” Moreover,
Ezek. 36:19 states that Israel lost its land due to its sin and had, past tense, been scattered,
past tense, among the nations, plural, and lands, plural. There is no necessity here to see this
as being present and not during their ancient captivity. Moreover, verse 8, indicates an
immanent hope for this prophecy to be fulfilled.
5. Thus, the supremacy of the Jewish people has been abrogated for the kingdom of the elect
in Christ, Jews and Gentiles. (Isa. 56:1-9, 66:18-21, Mat. 21:43, Rom. 11:16-21, Gal. 3:29, 6:16)
6. The New Covenant(Jer. 31:31-34) is not absolutely new. It is a renewal of the Abrahamic
Covenant, not a new administration of the Sinaitic Covenant. (Gal. 3) Sinai was a peculiar
covenant, a dark dispensation formed with the framework of the covenant of grace made with
Israel alone not all mankind, with the covenant of works published in it to drive them to
Messiah; but Moses adds expiation of sin by blood typifying the ransom of blood that
Messiah was to pay for our sins, as this Covenant, all along had sacrifices and blood to
confirm it. The Jews missed what the covenant of works was intended to show them, their sin
and spiritual destitution, and sought the covenant of works as a means to establish their own
righteousness. They should have seen from the sacrifices, their need of redemption but they
refused. They chose rather to create their Islamo-Gospel. The Hebrew Roots say that we are
not in the New Covenant because of Heb 8:11 “And they shall by no means teach each one
his neighbour, and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know ‘הוהי, because they all shall know Me,
from the least of them to the greatest of them. Yet John says, 1 Jn 2:27 But the anointing
which you have received from Him stays in you, and you have no need that anyone should
teach you. But as the same anointing does teach you concerning all, and is true, and is no
falsehood, and even as it has taught you, you stay in Him. The point is, we no longer need
prophetic revelation. The Apostles and Yeshua have explained everything about the Bible we
need to know. We just have to believe it. Regular uninspired teachers are of course still
required.
7. The New Covenant contains a promise of eternal life. The Sinai Covenant is not the
Covenant that is renewed with Yeshua. The Sinai Covenant, a covenant distinct from the
Abrahamic Covenant (Deut. 5:3, Jer. 31:32) renewed with Yeshua (Luke 22:20, Gal. 3:6-18),
contained no promise of eternal life. (This is not to say that Abraham, Jacob, or Job, who were
not in the Sinai Covenant did not receive such promises, or men like David knew nothing of
this but received no promise.)
8. The Temple, including Ezekiel’s temple,(the spiritual residence of the people of Elohim) has
been replaced with the Body of Christ. (Lev. 16:16, Psa. 15:1-5, 27:1-6, Mat. 23:34-39, 24:1-2,
John 2:19, Acts 15:14-16, 1 Tim. 3:15, Eph. 2:19-22, 1 Cor. 3:9, 6:19, Heb. 12:22-23, Rev. 21:1-3,
Theses 53 of my 166 Theses)
9. Typology has not all ceased and to assert such a thing is Preterist heresy. The Sabbath is a
type of the rest to come in the future. The feast of trumpets and the harvest feasts are
shadows of the judgment and second coming of Messiah, which have not yet come. Preterism
and the Amillennialists say that there are no more types and shadows because everything has
been fulfilled. On the contrary,
Heb 4:9 So there remains a Sabbath-keeping for the people of Elohim.
Col 2:16 Let no one therefore judge you in eating or in drinking, or in respect of a festival or a
new moon or Sabbaths – Col 2:17 which are a shadow of what is to come – but the Body of
the Messiah. (Notice Paul says that the Sabbaths are, present tense, shadows, of things to
come!)
I put this argument to Ken Gentry and he blocked me and deleted my comments.

10. New Covenant believers are not under the curse of the Law as a Covenant of Works.
(Rom. 10:1-4, Gal. 3:10-13) (Systematic theology, pg. 308, Chapter 24 Of the Law of God 433)
11. The New Covenant emphasizes the inner Man(character) over, but not to the exclusion,
of outward circumstances of Worship, Race and Civilization.(Mat. 23:26, Rom. 2:28-29, 9:3)
In the Old Testament the law was in the hearts of true believers (Psa. 40:8) and spiritual in
its nature (See my articles on Spiritual Fulfillment of Promise and Prophecy in the Old
testament (link1, link2), but in the New Covenant true conversion is more prolific and
especially its full blossoming in the New Heavens and the New Earth. (Systematic
Theology, pg. 726)
Jer. 31: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those
days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and
will be their God, and they shall be my people.
2 Corinthians 3:3 Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ
ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of
stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
Phil. 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Thus, the New Covenant believer, is not mutually exclusive from the Old Testament
believer, in that, the law is in his heart as a burning zeal and an inward spring of spiritual life,
(Rom. 8:4) yet, he has, not the shadowy carnal ordinances of the ceremonial rituals of the
Levite Priesthood, but the actual example of the Lord Jesus Christ in his life and death, his
conscience cleansed with the blood of Christ,(Heb. 9:9-14, 10:2, 22) the Rabbinic darkness
exposed and refuted,(Matt. 5) clearing his sight to behold the perfect law in the Torah, all the
law and the prophets fully explained to him by Christ and the apostles, (Luke 24:27) and a
wellspring of better promises laid out before him; yeah eternal life. (Heb. 8:6)
So prolific is the gospel under the New Covenant, man is assumed to already abhor the sins
condmened in Torah. His inward frame keeps him from sin not outward restraints or threats
of torture.
Yet this emphasis on the inward spiritual character of man in the New Covenant does not
do away with Patriarchal Masculine Hierarchy. The New Testament does not teach the
Soul. (Index and Miscellaneous Articles of Protestant Messianic Eschatology, pg. 14 et al.)
The New testament does not teach pacifism. (An Essay Against Christian Pacifism,
Dominionism Defended, A Biblical Defense of Being an Angry Cussing Asshole) The New
Testament does not teach asceticism. (An Essay Against Christian Sexuality, 100 Laws of
Man’s Sexual Power, Thomas Jefferson Was Wrong, pg. 171 et al.)The New Testament
upholds Theocracy and Military Dominion (166 Theses (138-152), Thomas Jefferson Was
Wrong) The New Testament upholds a hierarchical priestly authority. (Systematic
Theology, Chapter 30 Of the Church, III-IV)
12. The Spirit is one with the letter of the law regarded in themselves. Yet the utility of the
law as a covenant of works is a curse.
Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held;
that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of
the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.
[pg. 196]
[pg. 198]
13. Baptism is a Levitical purification and washing. (Systematic Theology, Chapter 32 Of
Baptism)
14. The Lord’s Supper is a Kiddush meal. (Miscellaneous Articles Concerning the Law, pg.
18)
15. The Patriarchal federal household principle continues into the New Testament.
(Systematic Theology, pg. 715)
16. Jesus and the Apostles never condemned the Torah. They condemned the Rabbinic
interpretations of the Torah. (Matt. 5, 19:4, Acts 10-11, 15) The Life and Times of Jesus the
Messiah by Alfred Edersheim (Grand Rapids, MI: Christian Classics Ethereal Library)
Book IV, Chapter 5, pg. 818,
“From their suitableness to what had preceded, we can have little doubt that
both that which St. Matthew, and that which St. Luke, reports was spoken on
this occasion. Because knowledge of the Father came only through the Son,
and because these things were hidden from the wise and revealed to ‘babes,’
did the gracious Lord open His Arms so wide, and bid all241 that laboured and
were heavy laden come to HIM. These were the sheep, distressed and
prostrate, whom to gather, that He might give them rest, He had sent forth
the Seventy on a work, for which He had prayed the Father to thrust forth 274
labourers, and which He has since entrusted to the faith and service of love of
the Church. And the true wisdom, which qualified for the Kingdom, was to
take up His yoke, which would be found easy, and a lightsome burden, not like
that unbearable yoke of Rabbinic conditions;242[FN: Acts xv. 10] and the true
understanding to be sought, was by learning of Him.”
17. Lastly, all Christian arguments would prove is that the Torah applies on the state level
not the church.
