ORGASOL Polyamide Powders

General Bulletin

Arkema Inc. offers ORGASOL®, high-performance polyamide powders for use in the
graphic art and coating industries.

ORGASOL® ultra- fine polyamide powders are polymers and copolymers of lauryllactame and/or
caprolactame obtained by direct polymerization. Due to this unique process, ORGASOL® powders
are available as micro-porous spherical beads with a very narrow particle size distribution (Figure 1).
The structure, the shape and the properties of ORGASOL® powders contrast with other powders
made by grinding or precipitation. ORGASOL® powders contrast also from waxes due to their higher
melting point, better chemical resistance and different migration process.

Grades differ in terms of composition (polyamide 6, polyamide 12, copolyamide 6/12), particle size
(from 5 to 60 microns), specific surface area and melting point. The Table 2 gives the specifications
and typical properties of the different ORGASOL® grades. The density of the ORGASOL® grades is
between 1.03 and 1.15.

ORGASOL® polyamide 12 powders from 5 to 20 microns meet the FDA requirements 175.300 and
177.1500.

In the coating and graphic art industries, ORGASOL® ultra- fine polyamide powders offer unique
properties:
- abrasion and scratch resistances,
- surface texturing effect (soft feel),
- gloss control,
- anti-blocking (coefficient of friction control, dry lubricant effect).

Thus, ORGASOL® powders permit to achieve the desired performances in a wide range of coating
types (solvent based, water based, UV/EB and powder) and coating processes (roller or spray). Coil-
coating, can-coating, industrial coating (metal, wood, plastic, rubber, glass…), paper coating, ink and
over-print varnish are the typical applications.

In the coating applications, the ratio between the ORGASOL® particle size and the coating thickness
is one of the key parameters to control in order to achieve the desired performances.
One of the ORGASOL® properties in the UV/EB system is to function as a matting agent that does
not increase the viscosity of the UV formulation.
In the paper coating industry, the smaller average particle size ORGASOL® grades (5, 10, and 20
microns) with a high porosity are used to improve printability and decrease the coefficient of friction.
In the overprint varnishes and inks industries, ORGASOL® is mainly used as an anti-blocking agent.
