10 a The resultant vector
a + b = 3i − 2j + pi − 2pj
= (3 + p)i − (2 + 2p)j
(3 + p)i − (2 + 2p)j is parallel to 2i − 3j
so (3 + p)i − (2 + 2p)j = λ(2i − 3j)
so 3 + p = 2λ (1)
and 2 + 2p = 3λ (2)
Solve the two equations simultaneously.
Multiply equation (1) by 2 to give
6 + 2p = 4λ
λ=4
p=5

b When p = 5
(3 + p)i − (2 + 2p)j = 8i − 12j
