Pages in The Modelling Mode: Prepared By: Engr. Kenneth L. Edra

The document describes geometry creation methods in STAAD.Pro including using the structure wizard, snap node input, copy/paste, and importing DXF files. The structure wizard allows generating a prototype structure and merging it into the workspace. Snap node input involves manually inputting node coordinates. Copy/paste copies and pastes selected frames. Importing DXF files allows creating geometry in AutoCAD and importing the DXF file into STAAD.Pro.

CE 193 – Module 2 GEOMETRY

Pages in the Modelling Mode

The pages and sub-pages under Modelling Mode are described below in brief.

Page Sub-Page Purpose

Setuo Job Specifies job-related information such as job name,
client name, job no.,revision details, etc.
Geometry Beam Specify frame members along with nodes. Grids and
tables are used to generate members graphically and
to specify node coordinates, member incidences,
member orientation (Beta angle) etc. respectively
Plate Specify plate elements along with nodes. Grids and
tables are used to generate elements graphically and
to specify node coordinates and element incidences
respectively
Solid Specify solid elements. Grids and tables are used to
generate elements graphically and to specify node
coordinates and element incidences respectively
General Property This page specifies member properties, such as
sections, materials, etc. referring to the beam, plate,
and solid tables in respective pages, properties are
identified by property numbers.
Spec Specify advance member condition, such as member
release, tension-only members, etc.
Support Establish and assign supports with restrained degree
of freedoms.
Load Specify loading conditions on the structure.
Analysis/Print Pre-print Specifies items to be included in the output file
before analysis
Analysis Specifies the type of analysis to be performed by
STAAD.Pro
Post-print Defines items to be included in the output file after
analysis
Design Steel Specify design conditions and parameters for the
Concrete type of design to be performed
Timber
Aluminum
Footing

Nodes Table
This table lists the node numbers and their coordinates. It can also be used to define new nodes and
edit existing node-coordinates.

If the user clicks on a node number in this column, the node gets highlighted in the table as well as in
the structure view. It also contains the following columns: Node, X, Y, and Z.

Node
This column lists the Node

X
The X coordinates of the nodes in the currently
selected unit. Changing this immediately changes the
X-coordinate of the node in the graphical display
also.

Y
The Y coordinates of the nodes in the currently
selected unit. Changing this immediately changes the
Y-coordinate of the node in the graphical display
also.

Z
The Z coordinates of the nodes in the currently
selected unit. Changing this immediately changes the
Z-coordinate of the node in the graphical display
also.

Beams Table
Lists the members and their incidences, along with member properties, materials and member
lengths. This table can be used to add new or edit existing beams. Selecting a member number in the
first column (row selection) selects the member in the structure view as well.

The Beams Table appears as shown below.

Beam

The Beam column lists the members in numerical order.

Node A, Node B
List the node numbers of the start and end nodes of the members, respectively.

Property Refn.
Lists the property tag number for the member. When the member properties are assigned through
the General | Property Page, these values are automatically updated in this column.

Material
Displays the material for the member. When the material is assigned through the General | Material
Page, these values are automatically updated in this column.

Beta
Lists the beta angle (orientation) of the beams. These values may be changed directly or assigned
using the General | Property Page.

Length
Displays the length of the members with the currently selected length unit. STAAD automatically
calculates this value from the coordinates of the two nodes of the member.

Plates Table
The Plates table lists the plate elements, their node numbers, element property tag numbers, and
material. This table may be used to add new or edit existing plates. Selecting a plate number in the first
column (row selection) selects the plate in the structure view as well.

Then, Merge the generated model into the work space provided by the software

A StWizard dialogue box will ask if you like to transfer/merge the prototype into STAAD.Pro, click Yes

After clicking Yes, the “Paste Prototype Model” will ask if you you want to move it by distance or by
coordinate, click OK

This should be the next figure

Exercise #1: Using the Open Structure Wizard, input the necessary values to come up with the given
figure below

2. Using Snap Node Input

Click File—New—Open Structure Wizard and close, click Genera on the Page Control Tab

This should be the figure below

3. Using Copy/Cut and Paste

This technique is usually applied to regular frames or plans

Select the frame that you want to Copy

Press CTRL+C to copy, and CTRL+V to paste, and a dialogue box will appear

Click reference pt. tab and “Specify reference Pt.” will appear, choose the encircled part as its
base point, click OK and specify the point where you will put the copied frame.
