Proper:
Filipino is a race that is bursting with talents. Not only do we excel in the visual arts,
we are considered to be a source of world class performers. Contemporary music in the
Philippines usually refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from
twentieth century art music in the West, as well as the latest trends and musical styles in
the entertainment industry. This brief introduction covers only the works written by
the art music composers.

A. Pre-Colonial Era
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the types of indigenous music found in the
country were instrumental and vocal. Example of Negritos tribal songs accompanied
by ethnic musical background..
B. Spanish Colonial Era
Musical forms that were born from this period were religious hymns and chants,
orchestras, bands, and ensembles such as rondalla, favoured musical instruments in
homes during the Spanish colonial times were the piano and the harp.
C. American Period
The American through the public school system taught children simple hymns.

The mid- 20 century Filipino music, though still influenced by foreign music, eventually
developed a more Filipinized flavor through the use of the vernacular in lyrics and
creation of wholly original compositions.
Dance of the 20th century there was a large increase in the variety

classical music · Philippine art songs—Kundiman · Scottish Ceòl Mór · Kandyan dance
of Sri Lanka are examples of this category.
Kundiman and Harana
A musical form that is a product of Spanish colonization. That signifies love and
affection for someone, highly emotional and sentimental, expressing personal sorrow.
This is commonly observed in far flung barrios.

Ballad
A traditional song that narrates an event in a community in modern times like
acoustic, and love songs.
Chamber
Music
A form of instrumental music composed by a small ensemble where each part is
played by one player , as opposed to an orchestra performed by a group of musicians.
Choral music
Musical composition intended to be performed by a group of singers called choir.
Liturgical Music
Songs intended for Christian church services.

Opera
Combination of both music and theatre.
Some of the most famous musicals through the decades that followed
include West Side Story (1957), The Fantasticks (1960), Hair (1967), A Chorus
Line (1975), Les Misérables (1985), The Phantom of the Opera (1986), Rent
(1996), The Producers (2001), Wicked (2003) and Hamilton (2015).
Pop music
Used to describe music that is readily available to broad populace. Examples
like

Protest Songs
Songs that bring to light injustices and inequality in society.

Indigenous dances in the Philippines is influenced and molded by various factors,
such experiences and events in the community as reflected by the war dances of the
people of the mountain provinces.
b. Spanish Colonial Period
With the arrival of the colonizers, the dancing traditions and forms changed. During
the Spanish regime, dancing played an important part in the social activity of the people.
Among the Christianized Filipino groups, the Kumintang was the oldest Dance and song.
American
Period
Jitterbug and the Lindy Hop and swing dance are dance forms that originated
in the US. Jazz dance and Hip hop as well and - there's a longer list
of dance forms that originated in the US and are a part of US culture but that does
not mean they are traditionally taught to children and done throughout the
country.

Contemporary performance is what is going on in theatres and art- centers now and
there is a huge range. This could be theatre-based, dance-based or music-based or a
combination of all three forms and more including visual and live art, circus and
puppetry.
