This Study Resource Was: Equations With Homogeneous Coefficients

This document discusses solving differential equations with homogeneous coefficients. It defines homogeneous polynomials and functions, and explains that a differential equation can be transformed into a separable equation if the terms are homogeneous of the same degree. Examples are given of determining if a function is homogeneous and solving homogeneous differential equations. Assessment tasks involve finding partial derivatives, determining homogeneity, and solving given homogeneous differential equations.

MATH 010 / EMATH 003 DIFFERENTIAL EQUATION

Topic: Equations with Homogeneous Coefficients

Intended Learning Outcome:
1. Determine the homogeneity of a given function.
2. Solve for the general and particular solution of differential equations with homogeneous coefficients.

The polynomials: 4. f(x,y) = (x2+y2)e2x/y +4xy

x2 – 3xy +4y2
x3 + y 3
x y + 7y5

are said to be homogeneous polynomials because each

term possesses the same degree (power) when all the
powers of each variables are summed.

The homogeneity of a function is defined as

Steps:
1. Check if it is homogeneous.
2. Let:
y = vx or x = vy
dy = vdx + xdv dx = vdy +ydv
