Operation principle
The DSU is a half-controlled thyristor-diode rectifier. It rectifies three phase AC
current to direct current for the intermediate DC link of the drive. The intermediate
DC link is further supplying the inverter that runs the motor. There might be one
inverter only (single drive) or several inverters (multi drive) connected to the
intermediate circuit. The figure below shows the main circuit diagram of the diode-

Thyristors (V11, V13, V15, V21, V23, V25) connect the AC line terminals in cyclic
sequence to the upper DC busbar (+). Diodes (V12, V14, V16, V22, V24, V26)
connect the AC terminals in cyclic sequence to the lower DC busbar (-). In the
normal steady-state operation with continuous current, each thyristor and diode
carries the current for a 120° period.
There are two control modes for the upper leg thyristor firing: the charging mode and
the normal mode. The charging mode is in operation a short period after the power
switch on: While the intermediate circuit capacitors located in the inverter module(s)
are charged, the thyristor firing angle is controlled from 270 to 0 degrees. In the
normal mode, the thyristor firing angle is 0 degrees: The thyristors operate as
diodes.

It is also possible to connect all input power terminals of module 1 to the transformer Y-output and
module 2 to the transformer D-output. However, note that then the two bridges inside a single module
do not form a twelve-pulse connection any more. This means that the benefits of the twelve-pulse

Lead the cables into the inside of the cabinet and connect as follows:
• Twist the cable shields to bundles and connect to cabinet PE (ground)
busbar. Connect the separate ground conductors/cables to cabinet PE 1
(ground) busbar.
• Connect the phase conductors to the input power terminals (U1.1 …). For
tightening torques, see chapter ACS800-304 and ACS800-704 technical
data, page 98.
(1) Depending on the cable size, use cable lugs or dual-cable screw lug con-
nectors. See chapter ACS800-304 and ACS800-704 technical data, page 94.
For installation details, see Use of the dual-cable screw lug connector below.

Installation check-list
WARNING! Ensure that the disconnector of the supply transformer is
locked to open position, i.e. no voltage is, or cannot be connected to drive
inadvertently. Check also by measuring that there is no voltage
connected.
Check that the mechanical and electrical installation of the drive is
inspected and OK.
Ensure that the surroundings and inside of the cabinet are free from dust After the start, the cooling air fans
and loose objects like cable trimmings and other waste left from the may suck nearby loose objects into
installation. the unit. This might cause failure and
damage the unit.
Basic checks with no voltage connected
If the unit is equipped with an air circuit breaker, set the current trip limits Optional device. See the delivery
of the breaker. The trip limits have been preset to generic values by the specific circuit diagrams.
breaker manufacturer. The generic limits do not correspond the protection
requirements of the application.
General rule
Ensure the selectivity condition is fulfilled i.e. the breaker trips at a lower
current than the protection device of the supplying network, and that the
limit is high enough not to cause unnecessary trips during the
intermediate DC circuit load peak at start.
Long term current limit
Rule of thumb: Set to the rated AC current of the module.
Peak current limit
Rule of thumb: Set to a value 3-4 times the rated AC current of the
module.
If earth (ground) fault supervision is required, tune the monitoring function See chapter Hardware description,
by setting the current trip level. page 28.
Note: Inactivate the internal earth (ground) fault detection in an IT (ungrounded)
power system.
Note: If the drive is equipped with a separate insulation monitoring device, do not
activate the DSU function but tune the insulation monitoring device after the DSU
is started.

Fuses protect the input cable and the diode-thyristor bridges of the DSU against
short circuits. Note that in the basic module size D4 there are two bridges in parallel.
Both bridges need to be fed through individual fuses.
For more information on the protections, see ACS800 Multidrive Planning the
Electrical Installation [3AFE64783742 (English)].

The DSSB board is the user interface for the DSU control. The board also handles
some basic control functions of the unit. The DSSB DSU System Board kit contains
the board in a metal housing to be installed onto a mounting rail (7.5 x 35 mm /
EN50022). The DSSB door mounting kit includes the board in a metal housing and
accessories for a door mounting (assembly plate, etc.), an on/off/start switch and a
reset button. For more information on the DSSB board, see chapter Hardware
description. For the illustration and dimensions of the kits, see chapter Dimensional
drawings.

DSU module power input cabling, power output cabling (busbars), and the wirings to
the user interface board are all connected to the module through a quick connector.
The basic connector kits consist of one, two or three parallel connectors for the
corresponding module configurations. The kits for the bigger units consist of the
basic kits. Note that max. two parallel DSU modules (and connectors) fit inside one
Rittal cubicle. The contents and dimension of the basic connector kits are shown in
chapter Dimensional drawings.
The plastic snap-on insulator isolates the quick connector input busbars from each
other.
The dual-cable screw lug connectors are needed for installing cables with conductor
sizes 2 × 185…240 mm2. The figure below shows one lug and a busbar it is
connected to.

The withdrawable air circuit breaker makes and breaks the normal load current,
protects the circuit against short circuit and overload, and disconnects it from power
supply (when pulled out). The main features are:
• rated voltage: 690 VAC
• rated current: 1250…5000 A. See table above.
• rated breaking capacity under short circuit Icu: 75…100 kA. See table above.
• version: withdrawable (disconnects when pulled out)
• busbar orientation: rear horizontal busbars
• number of busbar poles: 3

The RFI line filter suppresses conductive emission of the drive effectively. To fulfil the
first environment requirements of the European EMC Product Standard (EN 61800-3
+ A11) the drives equipped with ACS800-304 and ACS 800-704 supply modules
need to have the filter installed. There are also other items to consider such as
cabinet construction, cable selection, etc. For more information on European EMC
requirements, see ABB Guide no. 3 EMC Compliant Installation and Configuring the
Power Drive System [3AFE61348280 (English)] and ACS800 Multidrive Modules
Planning the Cabinet Installation [3AFE64783572 (English)]. For a list of items to
consider in EMC compliant installation of a cabinet-installed ACS800 multidrive, see
also ACS800 Multidrive Planning the Electrical Installation [3AFE64783742
(English)].
The main features of the B84123-B1000-S80 line filter are:
• rated voltage: 520 VAC (three phase)
• rated frequency: 50/60 Hz
• rated current: 1000 A
• leakage current: < 40 mA
• dimensions [mm]: W: 260 mm, H: 410, D: 140

Note: It is not allowed to use this line filter in an IT (ungrounded) power system.
For dimensional drawings and other information on the filter, see the manufacturer’s
homepage at http://www.epcos.com.
The coupling mechanism couples the disconnectors of the parallel DSU modules
together. Thus all disconnectors can be operated by one handle connected to any of
the modules. The figure below shows the mechanism for two disconnectors.
Note: Three modules do not fit inside one Rittal cubicle. Therefore the mechanism
for three disconnectors cannot be used in Rittal installations.

The two-position operating handle controls the switch disconnector(s) of the DSU
module. The handle can be locked to open position.
The handle is to be installed onto the door. It mounts onto the axle of the switch
disconnector that protrudes through the module front plate.
The installation accessories kits include top and bottom supports for the DSU
module(s). The figures below illustrate the contents. For the dimensions, consult a
local ABB representative.

AC fuses
Check that the operating time of the fuse is below 0.5 seconds. The operating time
depends on the fuse type (e.g. gG, T or aR), supply network impedance and the
cross-sectional area, material and length of the supply cable. In case the 0.5
seconds operating time is exceeded with gG or T fuses, ultrarapid (aR) fuses will in
most cases reduce the operating time to an acceptable level. The fuses must be of
the “non-time delay” type. See also ACS800 Multidrive Planning the Electrical
Installation [3AFE64783742 (English)].
Note 1: Larger fuses must not be used.
Note 2: Fuses from other manufacturers can be used if they meet the ratings.
Note 3: The recommended fuses are for branch circuit protection per NEC as
required for the UL approval.
Note 4: Use one fuse per each input terminal of the DSU module (i.e. six fuses per
D4 module, three fuses per D3 module).
