IELTS Essay Samples (student’s band 6, Adam’s Band 9)

Adam's Writing Samples, IELTS TOEFL Writing Samples, Peer Writing Samples

Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workspace. Others think that the
true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an
employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

The university has been playing a prominent part in the world, especially since the third industrial revolution in which people implemented initiatives to
seek solutions to their issues in a theoretical and practical manner. Though the received wisdom is the main responsibility of the university should be
providing its students with adequate knowledge to be employed in the industry, there are some critics who conjecture that its main focus should be
academic, without considering the requirements of various companies. However, I believe that the factors that are expected by organisations are of
paramount importance.

To begin with, the career is important for the majority of people around the world. The predominant reason for this is without having excellent jobs, it
would be next to impossible to achieve their goals in terms of financial and lifestyles. Thus, were the universities, for instance, not to provide their
followers with adequate knowledge in order to climb the career ladder, it might serve as a deterrent to pupils to enrol in university courses.

Furthermore, any research should assist in solving different practical issues or enhancing certain aspects of people. In other words, no matter how
advanced or complex task is, without solving a problem no one can take the advantages of it. Therefore, neglecting the requirements of society and
organisations in university curriculums is not only unfair but it also eschews the people’s expectations of such courses.

In conclusion, the question of whether universities should mainly aim for industrial applications or pure academic subjects has been a debatable topic
among some educationalists. Despite such arguments, I contend that the main purpose of higher education is to equip the students with sufficient
knowledge to be used under various official circumstances, in a practical manner. (290)
Rewrite:

A university degree is essential in the modern workplace, since without it young people struggle to find meaningful work. Some people thus contend
that universities ought to equip their students with marketable skills and knowledge. Others argue that theoretical knowledge is just as valuable. I
personally believe that a balanced curriculum, with both abstract and practical knowledge, is ideal.

As the global population grows, competition for employment increases accordingly. Consequently, in order to succeed in modern jobs markets,
applicants need to possess skills that set them apart and makes them attractive to employers, such as computing, training, and other skills. Moreover,
as work environments change rapidly, and taking into account that young people spend a considerable amount of time in school, they cannot afford to
fall behind and miss opportunities. Thus, these academic institutions have a duty to graduate pupils with the best tools to enter the workforce right
away.

Nevertheless, universities have a long tradition of providing critical thinking skills, which allow for innovation and adaptability in the aforementioned
evolving workplace. In other words, students who learn to think in abstract ways can manipulate their obsolete skills into relevant ones suited to new
market demands. To illustrate, consider a philosophy major. This person surely has very good critical thinking skills and creativity; moreover, he knows
how to communicate well. Consequently, this person can become an influential blogger, copywriter, or news contributor. Thus, his theoretical
knowledge allows him to apply his abilities to practical matters.
In conclusion, the main purpose of higher education is to prepare students for a life in which career success is vital. In order to do this, a university
should teach students practical skills to find immediate work and the theoretical skills necessary to adapt to changing work environments. (293)
