ICT in Education: Challenges & Solutions

The document summarizes research on the utilization of information and communication technologies (ICT) to improve teaching and learning processes. It reviews existing literature on ICT implementation in schools globally and locally. The review identifies gaps in research and makes recommendations for further studies to understand how to better incorporate ICT into education systems, especially in developing countries. The document concludes that while ICT holds potential, more practical research is still needed to overcome limitations and barriers to its effective use in classrooms.

Chapter One

Literature Review

1. It is of critical importance to review existing literature on ICT implementation at schools

to increase knowledge and understanding of practices while comparing local practices to
global practices. Review of existing literature reveals a range of theoretical perspectives
and practices that are relevant to this study. This review of literature has also enabled
the researchers to understand different approaches of ICT implementation in education
with special focus on teachers’ training and skill in the global context in the following part
of this chapter. This study will discuss the situation of the impact of globalization and
development processes on ICT in education and challenging areas for proper
incorporation with pedagogical systems.

2. The objective of ICT is to connect the gap between the parents, educators and students
by prompting a viable, cooperative and straightforward mood of communication. It
likewise gives advanced information exchanging ways for educational institutions as
colleges and universities to pass or exchange information. Thus, it plays a vital role in
secondary and higher secondary education. Keeping this idea in mind, many of the
researchers focus on this level of education.

3. The government of many countries cannot afford quality education, let alone use of ICT.
Many donor countries have been seen to engage themselves in collaborating with
developing countries to formulate education policies with global perspectives in mind
(Williams, 2015). However, in developing countries, this collaboration takes place more
with government officials who often lack a deep understanding of the educational needs
of their country (Williams, 2015). In developing countries, departmental research projects
can be assisted for understanding the personnel in education systems. Studies are done
to identify the countries which are in dire need of transition in the education system.
4. Ali (2003. p. 2) identified three areas to conduct further research. The first area is how to
participate in the information society, the second considers how ICT impacts on access,
cost effectiveness and quality of primary education, while the third is to do with the way
that ICT changes the education process.

5. Reviews of existing literature show that only some NGOs and donor agencies have
conducted a few studies and have a few numbers of published papers. Those published
papers had recommendations to conduct more studies on the implementation of ICT in
education training at school level. Various challenges have already occurred at field
level. These challenges can be reduced through conducting new research study and
exploring suggestions into different broad areas.

6. While analyzing other research papers, we noticed that the researching institutions
chose different levels of education for conducting research. Choosing different levels
made it easier to get an overview of the whole education system at a time and present it
before the public.

7. One common thing is found among the research papers of the education ministries that
they divided their states into some division and carried the study on. Different studies
were done for urban and rural education processes so that a crystal-clear accurate
comparison is done and more importance is given to rural one to make it better.

8. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have become commonplace entities

in all aspects of life. Across the past twenty years the use of ICT has fundamentally
changed the practices and procedures of nearly all forms of endeavour within business
and governance. Within education, education is a very socially oriented activity and
quality education has traditionally been associated with strong teachers having high
degrees of personal contact with learners. The use of ICT in education lends itself to
more student-centered learning settings. But with the world moving rapidly into digital
media and information, the role of ICT in education is becoming more and more
important and this importance will continue to grow and develop in the 21st century. In
the papers which we have gone through, a literature review regarding the use of ICTs in
education was provided, effective use of ICT for education, along with ICT use in
teaching learning process; quality and accessibility of education; learning motivation,
learning environment.

9. Almost all the papers concerned with this topic start with the history of teaching and
learning and show how much it has progressed so far. For this, both the researcher and
the reader gains confidence in mind that we can do more and more as we have come
this far. These small sparks in mind may enliven the whole nation and fulfill the true
objective of these studies. In fact, in this way, it is proven that these researches will not
ever go in vain.

10. As time goes, we notice that the number of researches on this aspect is not decreasing,
rather it is increasing at a geometric rate. The reason for this is that different types of
research directs the mind of people and government in different ways which in turn
encourages different educational institutions to conduct research so that on one hand
information is collected from every small unit and on other hand the students get to know
about the actual state of the education system they are in, as well as compare with the
advancing ones.

11. ICT has offered great potential, especially as an aid to every aspect of human endeavor.
Inspite of the roles played by ICT especially in teaching/learning, there are still some
impediments to its effective utilization by the academic staff. Our examined papers show
that these barriers are taken into account and thorough research is being conducted to
alleviate it.

12. About 98% of the studies show that there is a greater field of going forward. Information
about new inventions and thoughts of inventors that they are planning to come to reality
are included in the papers. This implies that the studies are contributing to widen the
insight of the people and government as well to pack their bags up and start working to
visualize them. This shows that conducting research makes a positive impact
whatsoever.

13. Only a few research papers among the ones we have examined have solid statistics and
the rest of them are just literary which is not a good indication at all. More and more
research on practical fields should be done and real samples are to be collected to make
the toils done after these studies a successful one.

14. Just like any other technology, ICT too comes with certain limitations. While most of the
education specialists emphasize on putting aside some few disadvantages. Some of the
common problems are –misleading information, risk of cyber-attack and hack, risk of
traditional books and handwriting methods, managing online course difficulties, not
accessibility in everywhere, teachers require experience to handle ICT devices,
expensive internet and computer implementation. Thus, most of the researchers
emphasize on the way to uproot these impediments.
