Description:
The University of Trinidad and Tobago through the Department of Biosciences, Agriculture and Food Technologies (BAFT) / Eastern Caribbean Institute of
Agriculture and Forestry (ECIAF) Campus offers a residential programme providing training in Animal Health Management, Animal Production and
Veterinary Public Health. Cabinet Minute STTE (2006) 45 is an approval by Cabinet whereby current and future ECIAF’s programmes are mandated to
produce “young people with a practical technological tertiary level education”. Graduates of this programme are ‘work ready individuals’ who are rapidly
employed in the monitoring of animal health in the ruminant and poultry sector.
Although the Diploma in AHPVPH has been in existence for many years, this revised version brings in a new philosophy of training that seeks to embody the
entrepreneurial dimension and focuses on training in the three core areas. As uncontrollable external forces continue to threaten the national food supply, the
programme is well positioned to contribute to the achievement of food security in Trinidad and Tobago by filling the void in human capital within the
agricultural sector.
Graduates of the Diploma in AHPVPH Programme can obtain employment in the following areas:
Entry Requirements:
• Passes in at least five (5) subjects, inclusive of Mathematics and English Language, at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency (Grades I or II
and from 1998, Grade III). Agricultural Science double award is considered as two subjects.
OR
• Five (5) GCE O’ Levels inclusive of Mathematics and English Language at Grades A, B or C
OR

year of the programme.
Special facilities may be made for persons with physical disabilities on a case-by-case basis, and
Applicants should note that practical training courses commence at 6.30 a.m. every morning. Dormitory accommodations are available.
Diploma in Agriculture
Description:
Food security is a fundamental requirement of all economies. Agriculture in Trinidad and Tobago accounts for less than 1% of GDP and is characterized by
declining arable lands, an ageing farming population, high cost of labour and other inputs, a widening technological gap and low levels of investment. These
factors among others, adversely affect the economy’s ability to produce more food, which in turn impact the improvement of the food security status in
Trinidad and Tobago. As a consequence, large volumes of food items are imported from other economies resulting in a staggering average annual food import
bill of over four (4) billion TT dollars.
The following measures will address the problems in the agricultural sector by:
• Training and supporting young farmers as replacement to the ageing farmer population;
• More effective agricultural health and food safety standards;
• Facilitation of improved marketing;
• The adoption of profitable higher valued commodities;
• The adoption of new and appropriate technology.
These measures, however, point to the building of human capital as a key driver in the process of transforming the agricultural sector. The University of
Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) through the Department of Biosciences, Agriculture and Food Technologies (BAFT) / Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture
and Forestry (ECIAF) Campus offers a Diploma in Agriculture. It is a two (2) year residential programme offering full-time training in Agriculture. The total
number of credits required to complete the programme is eighty (80).
Although the Diploma in Agriculture has been in existence for many years, the UTT offers this revised version which brings in a new philosophy of training
that seeks to embody the entrepreneurial and environmental dimension. As uncontrollable external forces continue to threaten the national food supply, the
Diploma in Agriculture programme is well- positioned to contribute to the achievement of food security in Trinidad and Tobago by filling the void in human
capital within the agricultural sector.
While the UTT Diploma in Agriculture programme commenced in September 2007, it must be placed in context with the history of the agriculture
programme originally started at ECIAF.

and industry-relevant skills and competencies. Graduates who meet the programme matriculation requirements may apply for admission into any of the
UTT’s Engineering Bachelor degree programmes.
Chemical Engineering:
The NETD in Chemical Engineering is a well-established engineering discipline worldwide and designed to meet the present and future demand for
Chemical Engineering Technicians and highly trained Operators. Chemical and Process Engineering is about the transformation of raw materials into useful
products. Trinidad and Tobago’s manufacturing industry has need for a stronger knowledge base in chemical and process engineering at the technician and
operator level as well as to meet the industry need for more ‘hands-on’ graduate chemical or process engineers. This is particularly important as inherent
industrial and manufacturing processes, technologies and their associated instrumentation and control and quality systems are constantly modernising.
Civil Engineering:
The NETD in Civil Engineering is a practice of Civil Engineering designed to deal, not just with technical issues and efficient design, but all the more with
the larger social, economic, and environmental aspects of civil engineering work. The programme has been updated to include such specialist courses and
modules as project management, quantity surveying, building information systems management and sustainability. The programme has been designed to not
only develop practical knowledge and design skills in graduates, but also ensure articulation to engineering degree programmes.
Petroleum Engineering:
The NETD in Petroleum Engineering offered by the University of Trinidad and Tobago produces technicians capable of performing effectively in all areas
of the upstream petroleum industry. Upon completion of this programme of study, graduates develop the required skills through the practical application of
key concepts and principles in petroleum engineering technology. At the end of the first semester of the second year, students are given the option of
proceeding into industry as a Technician or qualifying to matriculate into the BASc programme in Petroleum Engineering on a “2+2” route. Students opting
to matriculate into the BASc programme in a discipline other than Petroleum Engineering are required to complete the diploma as if proceeding into
industry and then enrol into 1st Year BASc.
Electrical/Electronic Engineering:
Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology is a well-established discipline worldwide. Electrical/Electronic Engineering technicians use the principles
and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems within a number of public utilities as well as a wide range of
manufacturing, processing and transportation industries. The NETD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering programme is designed to equip individuals with
the practical skills, knowledge and understanding required for success in current employment and progression to future employment for a range of
Electrical/Electronic occupations including installation, testing, operation and maintenance of complex Electrical/Electronic Engineering products and
systems. The NETD in Electrical / Electronic Engineering (EEET) programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) of the
United Kingdom, having met the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and
Tobago (ACTT)
Mechanical Engineering:
The NETD in Mechanical Engineering programme offered by The University of Trinidad and Tobago is designed to produce Engineering Technicians
capable of performing effectively in a variety of industrial jobs. These include inspecting machinery, plant engineering, manufacturing, design and drafting,
maintenance activities and various technical services in industries. Graduates develop the required skills through the practical application of key concepts
and principles in mechanical engineering, such as: fluids, design, strength of materials, manufacturing, plant machinery, maintenance and controllers
Instrumentation Engineering:
Instrumentation Engineering is a well-established discipline worldwide. The National Engineering Technicians’ Diploma in Instrumentation Engineering
provides students with sound theoretical and practical training in the operation and maintenance of automated process control and measurement systems
used in the production of various commodities. Instrumentation Technicians test, certify, install, repair, inspect, maintain, and help to develop complex
instruments that measure and record changes in industrial environments. The process-controlled systems operated by these technicians are central to the
operation of such facilities as chemical plants, canneries, food processing plants, petroleum refineries, and power plants. The NETD in Instrumentation
Engineering (IET) programme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) of the United Kingdom, having met the UK Standard
for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) and the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT)
