the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center and Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes
Foundation because they are private university training hospital that have similar clientele
covering those mainly from the middle class to upper middle class social strata. All have medical
schools and residency training programs for different specialties. hotel ambience. All are
located within Metro Manila Area.
Market Share
Market share is important because it dictates superiority in the playing field that translates into
outstanding sales or patronage. By taking up a bigger piece of the pie, market leadership will be
convincingly conveyed to customers and even to competitors. UST Hospital edges the
competition because it’s one of the most recognizable hospital not only in Metro Manila but all
over the country. To add the fact that it been in service for over 70 years.
Financial Position
The UST Hospital is a tax-exempt entity, so it’s purpose is not really to generate profit. The
hospital has two divisions, a clinical teaching hospital that offers inexpensive medical care for
indigent patients and a private hospital for patients with financial means, which is partially used
to subsidize the clinical division. So, the financial position of USTH is weaker than UERMMC and
FEUNRF.
Innovativeness
All are university hospital, meaning that there is a thrust for education, research and training
which would translate to the hospital to be abreast with the rest of the world. UST Hospital is
one of the Philippine Hospital recognizable around the world not only for its rich history but its
services offered. Compared to the other 2 hospitals, UST Hospital has a Cancer Institute which
a leader in the country and an Interventional Center that can rival the Philippine Heart Center.
other radiologic tests. In our department of otorhinolaryngology alone, our alumni are the one
who brought cochlear implantation, endoscopic sinus surgery and nowabays endoscopic skull
base surgery and reconstructive surgery in the country. So UST hospital is always a leader when
it comes to being abreast with the rest of the world.
Management Depth
The composition of the organizational structure and management depth are important aspects
of operational success because they can be indicators of dynamism, openness and
accountability in running a corporation. The issue with UST Hospital is that the running of the
hospital is still heavily influenced by the Dominican Priests. Major decisions like investing on
new equipment or building additional hospital wing are usually made by the priests even after
deliberation of ideas put forth by the medical doctors running the hospital. Ultimately, the best
interest of the Dominican priests are always prioritized which doesn’t always translate to be
what’s best for the entire hospital.
Strategic Location
UST Hospital is located in Manila area while UERMMC and FEUNRF are located both in Quezon
City. UERMMC is near the QC-Manila border so as UST so both competes in the same area. FEU
is located further west which caters to Laguna and Rizal provinces as well as QC area. All
hospitals are strategically located (with major roads and in continuous influx of commuters,
near MRT/LRT/jeep and bus stations), so there is no advantage between these hospital when it
comes to located.
Customer Loyalty/Service
All hospitals has regular clientele, this is mainly because all are university hospital. The
advantage of USTH here is since we are predominantly Catholic country we see patients
referred by priests and nuns all over the Philippines.
Price Competitiveness
All hospitals offers affordable prices for diagnostics tests and lodging. These hospitals caters to
middle class and upper middle class however UST Hospital has a separate charging for patients
coming from the Clinical Division. In here patients receives 30% discount for laboratory tests
with free lodging/bed, food and doctors services. This is the reason why USTH can attract more
clientele (lower middle class) compared to the other 2 hospitals.
Brand Power
USTH tops the 2 other hospital when it comes to image and branding because it’s been in the
business for over 70 years. The university itself is the oldest in Asia, boasting a glorious history
of 4 centuries.
