Basketball Training Equipment
- The Ball
There are certain guidelines which one needs to follow when buying a basketball. For
practicing, one can play with a rubber ball. For professional competitions, one needs to
use an inflated ball made of leather.
Official size of a basketball is 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for men's game and
28.5 inches in circumference for women's game. It should weigh 18 to 22 ounces. When
bounced off 6 feet from the floor, a well inflated ball should bounce 49 to 54 inches in
height.
- The Shoes
There are three distinct types of basketball shoes: high-tops, mid-tops and low-tops.
Each type of shoe showcases distinct advantages. High-tops provide the best ankle
support, but are the heaviest type of basketball shoe. This can decrease speed-burst ability
needed for fast-break situations. Mid-top sneakers stop at ankle level, enabling players to
leverage added movement, but this type of shoe provides less stability than high-tops.
Low-tops provide the least amount of ankle support, but are the lightest type of sneaker.
Low-top basketball shoes will allow players to best take advantage of speed and
quickness.
Basketball Shooting Equipment
- Hoop / Basket / Rim
The hoop or basket is a horizontal metallic rim, circular in shape. This rim is attached to
a net and helps one score a point. The rim is mounted about 4 feet inside the baseline and
10 feet above the court.
- Basketball court
The court is a flat, hard surface free from obstructions, 28m long and 15m wide,
measured from the inner edge of the boundary line.
- Backboard
Basketball backboards are flat elevated vertical boards with mounted baskets, or
rims, used to assist or return the basketball after a shot in a game of basketball.
Commonly made of Plexiglas or tempered glass, backboards are designed to prevent
shattering when a player dunks. Regulation basketball backboards have a width of 72”
| 183 cm and a height of 42” | 110 cm with an inner rectangle that is 24” | 61 cm wide
and 18” | 45.7 cm tall.
Basketball Coaching Equipment
- Shot Clock
Shot clock keeps track how long the team has the ball.
