r3 Website - Home Heating Fuel Calculator

This document provides a calculator to compare the costs of various home heating fuels including natural gas, propane, fuel oil, wood stoves, wood pellets, electricity, coal, and heat pumps. It lists the price per unit and energy output in BTUs for each fuel. It then calculates the gross cost, furnace efficiency, delivery efficiency, and total cost per 1 million BTUs for each option. An example comparison of propane forced air to a ground source heat pump system is provided. Key values like fuel prices and efficiencies can be adjusted by the user.

Payout Example -- Comparing Propane Forced Air to Ground Source Heat Pump Hydronic System or Baseboard.
Payout at 100 Million BTU's per Heating Season (1110 Gallons of Propane)
Cost /yr with Propane = $3,075.26 Payout per Year = $2,293.39 Delivery Eff: Assumed 80% for Forced Air Ducting, 90% for in room
Cost /yr with Heat Pump (GS) = $781.87 stove and 85% for hydronic in-floor heat.
Ratio up or down based on Estimated Heat Requirement Electric Heat Delivery Efficiency is 100% if Baseboard,
but rated down if heat delivery is ducting or in-floor.
The fuel pricing and efficiencies shaded in blue are the primary values that the user will adjust.
