Expectations of Students:
 Students will be expected to spend a substantial amount of time reading the
texts and online assignments. Students will also be responding to weekly
online conference discussions, sending and receiving email, competing the
quizzes and tests and conducting research. Students will be expected to
spend 4-5 hours a week reviewing course content and engaging in group
work and discussions. Students will spend another 4-6 hours a week on
readings, preparing assignments or completing tests.

Important documents you will need for successful completion of the course:
 Go to the class syllabus on Canvas, read it and print out a copy. You will be
referring to it throughout the course. The syllabus contains the course description,
course expectations, expected outcomes, the grading rubric, and more.
 Go to the AFS 205 course schedule and read and print it out. It contains the
weekly schedule of readings and the dates of the quizzes and tests. You will be
referring to this as well.

Required computer programs and abilities:

 Student computers must have versions of Microsoft Word capable of producing
documents in the <docx> format. Students must also have internet access and a
UNC account to access the assignments on Canvas.
 Students should also be familiar with text editing on Microsoft Word, using email,
uploading and sending attachments, navigating the internet using various search
engines, and downloading appropriate plug-ins.

First week of class:

 Read and print out the syllabus.
 Read and print out the course schedule.
 Go to “Week 1” and read and print out the materials. Do this for each following
week.

Each week of the semester:

 Read the weekly objectives before reading the material.
 Note the dates and times when the tests/exams must be submitted.
 Participate in the online discussions.

Submission of written materials:

 Under the “Word” menu, go to “Preferences,” and then open up “Spelling and
Grammar.” Open the latter and go to “Writing Style.” Set the level to “Formal”
for your written submissions. Although spelling and grammar checks will not

1
catch all errors, this level will catch more of them. In addition, it will flag
sentences written in the passive tense, which you can choose to ignore.
 Be sure to place your name, course number and email contact at the top of ALL of
your submissions.
 Type all materials in Microsoft Word in <docx> format. For some, this might
mean that you have to upgrade your computer program or submit from a
computer center.

 Readjustment in grading criteria:

Mid-term exam 25%
Final exam 30%
Author presentation on Canvas 10%
Term paper (Required) 25%
