Unit Plan Overview: Verbs

October 19th-30th 2020


4th Grade English

Purpose of the unit: The purpose is to create a solid foundation of verbs. This will connect to both identifying and
writing the predicate in a sentence.

Unit title: Verbs

Subject area: English

Desired outcomes:

• Students will be able to independently identify past, present, and future tense verbs while reading
sentences.
• Students will be able to independently utilize identify past, present, and future tense verbs while writing
sentences.
Overarching goals, big ideas:

• Identify verbs
• Identify the verb tense
• Write sentences with appropriate verb tenses
Overarching standards to be studied: 1.4 4.F Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of
standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.

Daily big ideas:

• Verbs
• Present Tense Verbs
• Present Tense Progressive Verbs
• Past Tense Verbs
• Irregular Past Tense Verbs
• Future Tense Verbs
Daily goals:

 Students will be able to identify verbs in a sentence independently.


 After writing a sentence, students will be able to identify the action verbs independently.
 Students will be able to identify the helping verb and main action verb in a sentence with teacher support.
 When presented with two options, students will complete a sentence with the correct present tense verb
independently.
 When reading a sentence, students will be able to identify past tense verbs independently.
 Students will be able to modify a present tense verb to a past tense verb in a sentence independently.
 When presented with two options, students will be able to choose the appropriate past tense verbs to
complete a sentence independently.
 When given two options in the context of a sentence, students will be able to identify irregular and regular
past tense verbs independently.
 When given a prompt, students will be able to write sentences with past tense verbs independently.
 When given a prompt, students will be able to write sentences with future tense verbs independently.

• Informal: Questioning throughout lessons, guided practice in packets, Powerpoint review games,
Education.com games/assignments
• Formal: Quizzes/tests on Schoology, independent practice/homework in packets
Methods to monitor and adjust instruction during lesson: questioning, monitoring of in person students

Method to determine background knowledge: Interactive anchor charts

Materials needed: student iPads, teacher laptop, document camera, weekly English packets, cardstock and
markers for anchor charts, post it notes

Time allotment per day: half an hour

Number of days required to complete the unit: 9

Day 2- Verb Tense Introduction
