Veritas Cluster File System in a VMware environment
VMFS multi-writer protection disabled or shared SCSI bus

• Shared SCSI bus

– No VMware snapshots, Shared storage
vMotion, other VMware
features
– Disk-based fencing
– Separate controller

• VMFS multi-writer
– Better vApp support
– Server-based fencing
– 8 server limit
– pRDM with disk-based fencing
– vRDM, VMDK with server-
based fencing
5 InfoScale Enterprise VSE+ Training
InfoScale Enterprise across virtual and physical systems
Physical RDMs to allow access to same disks

Shared or non-shared
storage • pRDM for non-shared
• Multi-writer or shared SCSI
bus with pRDM
• Disk-based fencing
recommended

Just In Time Availability solution
Overhead reduced by only running clone VMs during planned maintenance

• VMs are single-node VCS clusters

• Clones created on-demand
• Applications migrated to clone by VCS
• Veritas AppProtect Wizard provided in
vSphere Web Client

8 InfoScale Enterprise VSE+ Training

Levels of availability
Case 1: Higher application availability
• E2 fails and VMware HA restarts v2 on E3
• E1 fails, app fails over to v2

Effects of Veritas/VMware HA interactions
Case 2: Lower application availability
• E2 fails and VMware HA starts v2 on E1 so both v1 and v2 are on now on the same ESX server
• E2 restarts, VMs do not failback automatically
• E1 fails and Both v1 and v2 fail and application is down until VMs restarted on E2

HA design considerations
• Use anti-affinity rules to ensure VMs run only where designated
– Keep VM CFSHA nodes using disk-based fencing from running on same ESX server
– Ensure VMs fail over to ESX servers with few, or no, other VM cluster nodes

• Configure redundant VMware management networks

Dual use as LLT links

• Live migration of VCS cluster nodes

– Migrating node unresponsive for some time period during migration
– LLT peer inactive timeout can be increased if migration > 16 seconds

11 InfoScale Enterprise VSE+ Training

Storage considerations for Veritas clusters
Non-shared storage Shared storage
• Only one VM can access data disks at a time • Multiple VMs access the same storage
simultaneously
• ESX server must detach one VM from storage
and attach devices to another VM • CFS/SFRAC control I/O
• VCS provides VMwareDisks agent to manage • Supported configurations
attach and detach – pRDM with shared SCSI bus
No vMotion, snapshots
• Non-shared storage can be
– pRDM with multi-writer
– VMFS/NFS datastores
Supports some vApps
– RDMs: Physical and virtual
– Both pRDM modes allow disk-based I/O fencing
• Supports vApps – VMDK/vRDM requires server-based fencing

InfoScale requirements and installation
Same as physical systems

• Requirements
– All VMs have network access
– Version of Linux guest operating system is supported
sort.veritas.com

• Installation prep
– From the console of one of the VMs with access to the InfoScale installation software, use CPI to
check prerequisites on virtual machines
– Select all VMs that will participate in the VCS cluster

• Installation
– Run CPI
– Optionally, continue to cluster configuration
14 InfoScale Enterprise VSE+ Training
Cluster configuration

• Prerequisites
– VMware high availability is configured (if desired)
– Veritas InfoScale Enterprise is installed on all virtual machines designated to participate in the VCS
cluster
– At least two network adapters are configured and dedicated to LLT for each virtual machine

• Configuration
Same options and selections as physical cluster configuration

Using the command line interface
VCS cluster and storage objects can be managed using the CLI from within the virtual
machines

17 InfoScale Enterprise VSE+ Training

Using VIOM
• Add VM cluster nodes as managed hosts in VIOM
• After VIOM discovery is complete, VIOM can configure and administer Veritas storage
and availability
