Install and Configure Operating System and
Peripherals
O perating system or what we call OS is one of the essential factors which allows users to
interact directly with the computer in order to have the best computer-generated output. This is
also the most important program that manages all other application programs on a computer.
W ithout an operating system, every application would need to include its own user interface,
as well as the comprehensive code needed to handle all low- level functionality of the underlying
computer, such as disk storage, network interfaces, and so on. Considering the vast array of
underlying hardware available, this would vastly bloat the size of every application and make
software development impractical.1
T his module will teach you how to install an operating system of any version of Windows and
to update system device drivers and peripherals. This will also help you to configure peripherals
and devices installed in your computer system.
Review
Before we proceed to the new competency to be taught by this module, let us first review what has
happened in the previous module on creating a bootable device. The following are the steps in
creating a bootable drive, you are to rearrange the following steps by putting numbers on the left
side shape to indicate the order of precedence. In each step, put comments under it on what have
you remembered upon performing this particular step in the previous module. You can describe
the length it takes to finish the given steps, its degree of difficulty, the screen appearance, and the
competency being asked. These will then help you perform the required competency in this
module. Do this activity on a separate sheet of paper
Click the Start button to begin the process. You'll be prompted with a
warning that all data on the UFD will be destroyed.
Click the Log button to open a side window and save the output details
Click the optical drive button next to the Create a bootable disk using
checkbox
Double-check the external drive to verify the files were copied over
Process Questions:
1. Do you still remember the steps you performed in the previous module?
2. How well did you do in this activity?
3. Why is bootable device important in computer configuration?
Bootable drives are essential in configuring the computer system and in connection
with this new module on installing the Operating System saved in the bootable disk
you have made in the previous module. This time, we will learn how to use that
device in installing an operating system.
ABSTRACTION
Here is a starter for you! To begin with our lesson, below is a diagram/ cycle of
Operating System Placement. This diagram tells you how this module would run,
and how operating system affects the cycle. You are to observe and try to
understand the flow of the diagram. Follow the arrows leading to another
placeholder. In every placeholder / rectangular box, you are to discuss how this
affects or how it relates to the next placeholder / rectangular box it is connected
with and so on. Or just simply explain the concept of the Operating System to the
User, Application, and Hardware. You will be graded using the rubrics below and
will be able to get the highest possible score of 30 points in this primer.

part of this modules in CSS.
A. Windows 10 Installation
Step 1. Insert the installation media for Windows 10. This may require
modifying the boot order in your PC’s BIOS. After the installer runs, the Install
Windows screen appears. If you fail to press any key, system will restart. So,
you will need to restart again your unit.
Step 2. On the Windows Setup screen, select your language, time, and currency format, and
keyboard layout. Click Next to continue.
Step 3. When you reach the installer screen, select “Install Now” and follow the
instructions to install Windows 10 on your PC.
Step 4. When you see the Activate Windows screen, you will need to either enter
a key or skip it. You may not see this screen if Windows 10 automatically detects
a key associated with your PC’s hardware.
a. If you’ve never installed and activated Windows 10 on this computer
before, enter your Windows 10 key here. If you don’t have one, but you
have a valid Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 key, enter it here instead.
b. If you’ve previously taken advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade offer
on this PC, click “I don’t have a product key”. Windows will automatically
activate with a “digital license” associated with your PC’s hardware on
Microsoft’s servers once it’s installed.
Step 5. When you reach the “Which type of installation do you want?” screen, click
“Custom” to perform a clean installation and remove everything on your PC. (If you want
to upgrade your existing installation, you can click “Upgrade”.)
Step 6. On the next screen, select the hard drive you want to install Windows
on and erase it. If you have multiple partitions on that drive, you may want to
erase those as well.
Warning: When you delete a partition, you’re also deleting all the files on that
partition. Be sure you have backups of any important files before doing this!
When you’re done erasing partitions, you should have a big block of “Unallocated
Space”. Select that, click “New”, and once it’s formatted your drive, click Next.
Step 7. Windows 10 will install itself, and may restart few times during this
process. When it’s done, you’ll see the normal setup interface you see when
setting up Windows 10 on any new PC, where you can add user accounts and
adjust various settings.
A. Windows 7 Installation
Step 1. Insert the installation media for Windows 7. This may require modifying
the boot order in your PC’s BIOS. After the installer runs, the Install Windows
screen appears.
Step 2. On the Windows Setup screen, select your language, time, and
currency format, and keyboard layout. Click Next to continue.
Step 6. (Skip this step if you chose Upgrade and have only one partition) Select the drive where
you want to install Windows 7 and click Next. If you want to make any partition, click Drive
options (advanced), make the partitions and then click Next.
Step 7. It will now start installing Windows 7. The first step, (i.e. Copying

if you do that.
Step 16. Select your desired option for Windows Updates.
1. Input Devices
a. Mouse
It is one of the most common devices that one would find on a desktop. It is
normally plugged with the USB connection. It would be connected through the
PS/2 port which is located on the back of the computer. This device doesn’t need
installing a driver because this is a Plug N Play Device (PnP).
b. Keyboard
It is the famous device that is being used today and it is connected
through a USB connection at the back of the computer. Old keyboards
used to have the PS/2 connection with them. This device doesn’t need
installing a driver because this is a Plug N Play Device (PnP).
c. Scanner
The scanners have the ability to turn the paper's image into a digital one
hence sending the data from one place to another while keeping the same
paper with us is now an easy task and the data can be sent more easily
through the internet. The scanner usually has a CD installer with it use
the CD to install the device driver look for the file “Setup.Exe” and follow
the instructions associated with it.
d. Game pad
Game pad is a wonderful thing for the gamers. It allows gamers to have
some control over their gaming experience. This usually has a CD
installer with it. Use the CD to install the device driver look for the file
“Setup.Exe” and follow the instructions associated with it.
e. Joysticks
It is the gaming input which is widely used. It is a stick which has many
buttons on it. This usually has a CD installer with it. Use the CD to
install the device driver look for the file “Setup.Exe” and follow the
instructions associated with it.
f. Digitizer
The digitalizing pad has some specialized pins that allow the user to draw
on it very carefully and accurately. They are for those who have got some
artistic abilities and they are installed with the driver.
2. Output Devices
a. Printers
If one has the data on the computer, it is obvious that he has to take it
out of the computer. Printers have various types and the laser printers
are the most famous type since they print really good. For printers, there
is much software and one must install the appropriate drivers to get
them work. The configuration of the pinner can be done manually once it
is connected to the computer. Again, just look for the “setup.exe” file in
the installation disk.
b. Speakers
many of the features which are used by us are mainly related to the
audio. Even while watching the movie or some educational video, hearing
the voice is a really important part and for that purpose, one needs the
speakers. This doesn’t need a driver to run, instead just plug in the
device at the back panel of the PC with a green pin and that’s it.
c. Display devices
One of the most integral parts of the PC is the display devices that are
used. Human beings need to see that what's going on the operating
system and to get in touch with the interface, they must have some
display device that can show them the appropriate amount of data. This
can be installed using the “setup.exe” file associated with the device disk.
Driver updates for Windows, along with many devices, such as network adapters,
monitors, printers, and video cards, are automatically downloaded and installed
through Windows Update. You probably already have the most recent drivers, but if
you'd like to manually update or reinstall a driver, here's how:
b. Select the Download Center link, type the update number in the
[Search] box (e.g. 2286198) and then click on the search icon or press
the Enter key on your keyboard.
