‘TORQUE CONVERTER
1. General (Figs. 99 and 100). The hydraulic
Circuit is Self-contained within the DRNCO
9150 power-shift transmission and Rockford
torque converter. Hydraulic fluid is used
to operate the torque converter (3, Fig.
99), the forward and reverse clutch pack
(11; Fig. 99), and the first, second and
third speed clutch packs (5 and 6, Fig. 99);

purposes. The transmission case serves as
the reservoir, and contains 15.0 Imp.
gallons (18.0'U.S. gallons, 68,1 litres)
of hydraulic fluid.
2, The fluid is drawn through the suction hose
to the pump installed in the torque
converter. After being transmitted through
the pump, the fluid is then circulated
through the supply hose to the filter head. 10,
A 25 micron filter element protects the
hydraulic circuit from contamination
3. The fluid passes through the filter to a
tee fitting in the pressure regulating
valve (12, Fig. 99), and is routed to the
selector valve (7, Fig. 99) mounted on the
transmission case, for ommard direction to
‘the clutch packs.
The pressure regulating valve contains
three spools. the first spoo) establishes
a naximun line pressure of 170 to 190 psi
(11,95 to 13,35 kg/cmé) to operate the

clutch packs. Hydraulic fluid that is not
required to maintain this pressure is
dumped to the second stage of the valve.
This is the torque converter supply circuit,
and the pressure regulated by the second
spool is 80 pst (5,62 ka/cm?). Excess
fluid is relieved to the third stage of the
valve for transmission and clutch pack
lubrication at a maximum pressure of 15 to
25 psi (1,05 to 1,76 kg/en?). Hydraulic
Fluid that is not'required to maintain this
pressure is dunped into the transmission
sump
Hydraulic fluid enters the selector valve
through the lowest port on the right hand
side, and into the first, second and third
speed selector section. ‘The valve spool
(8, Fig. 99) is drilled to transfer fluid
tothe appropriate clutch pack. At the
same time, fluid is ported across the valve
to the dump spool (9, Fig. 99) and the
forward/neutral/reverse control spool (10,
Fig. 99).
Hydraulic fluid used for lubrication enters
the selector valve through the second port
from the bottom on the right hand side, and
is directed through the passages in the
valve to all clutch packs that are not
Tocked in engagenent.
Each time the brakes are applied, fluid
fron the brake circuit forces the dump
p00] to move down the valve. This cuts
Off hydraulic fluid used for locking the
forward and reverse clutch pack, but di-
rects lubrication oil to both packs and
Places then in neutral until the brake
pedal fs released. When this happens,
the return spring moves the dunp spool
back to its original position, and the
Flow resumes as previously described.
Hydraulic fluid supplied to the torque
converter is returned to the pressure
regulating valve by way of the engine
mounted cooler (4, Fig. 99)
Drain hoses are connected to the bottom
of the torque converter and flywheel
housings, and are routed to the transmission
case.
Preliminary Steps. If a malfunction occurs
within the transmission/torque converter
hydraulic circuit, the cause or causes of
the problem should be detected by testing
or inspection before actual overhaul. It
is recommended that the following procedure
be adopted.
2. Check that the hydraulic fluid is the
type reconmended in the Table of
Lubricating O11 Specifications. The
fluid should be changed every $00 hours.
Check the level of the hydraulic fluid
in the sight glass (23, Fig. 100) on
the right hand side of ‘the transmissionHYDRAULICS

CLARK 28663 POWER-SHIFT TRANSMISSION - CLARK
£-270-TOROUE CONVERTER
1. General (Fig. 113). The hydraulic circuit
is self-contained within the Clark 28663
Power-shift transmission and Clark C-270
torque converter. Hydraulic fluid is used
to operate the torque converter, the low
range half-clutch pack, the forward and
2nd speed clutch pack, the reverse and 3rd
speed clutch pack; and also for cooling and
lubrication purposes. The transmission
case serves as the reservoir, and contains
10.0 Imp. gallons (12.0 U.S. ‘gallons, 45,4
Vitres) of hydraulic fluid.
2. The fluid is drawn through the suction hose
to the pump installed on the torque conver=
ter (15). After being transmitted through
the pump, the fluid is then circulated
through the supply hose to the filter head.
A 25 micron filter element (12) protects
the hydraulic circuit from contamination.
3. The fluid passes through the filter to the
pressure regulating valve (14) and is dis-
tributed to the torque converter (16) and
control valve (5). Charge of] flows from
the torque converter through the cooler
(11) and returns to the transmission sump.
Lubrication and leakage oil drains from
the converter to the transmission sump.
4, The fluid entering the control valve is
directed to engage the clutch packs and
lubricate the gear train. Return oil
drains directly into the sump.
5. hen the brake pedal is applied, pressure
builds up in the master cylinder (7),
brake fluid under pressure flows through
the dunp Tine (6) and forces the dump
spool to move dovn the valve. This cuts
off hydraulic fluid used for locking
either the forward or reverse clutch pack
(according to the direction selected at. the
tine), and effects a neutral phase until
the brake pedal is released. When this
happens, the return spring moves the dump
spool back to its original position, and
the flow resunes as described previously.
6. Preliminary Steps. If a malfunction occurs
within the transmission/torque converter
hydraulic circuit, the cause or causes of
the problem should be detected by testing
or inspection before actual overhaul. It
is recommended that the following procedure
be adopted
