JC210SP Chinese AM-FM IC Radio Kit

Construction
Background

If you follow the links above, (removed) you'll see two examples of AM
radio kits, one of my design with no soldering and one with a proper
superheterodyne line-up from China.  You'll notice however, that we've
not yet delved into the world of FM reception.  It might be possible to
do this in a solderless format using a slightly tricky thing called a super-
regenerative receiver, but while I'm brewing that up, here is a fully
functional kit from China that uses a single chip FM receiver, a single
chip AM receiver, and a single chip loudspeaker driver all in a neat
case.  As ever, the double-sided page of A4 instructions that come with
it are entirely in Chinese and are a bit scant on pictures and detail, and
there are one or two places where the inexperienced builder could slip
up.  So that's why these pages are here, to provide a step-by-step
English version.

The single chip receivers don't require any test equipment or a

superheterodyne alignment procedure so if anything, this is technically
a bit easier than the HX-6B

Errata

Or, corrections to things that are wrong in the original.

S1 is described as a 2P2T in the parts table which suggests a two pole

double throw.  It is a single pole double throw which you might write as
1P2T.
IC2 is described as a CD7642 in the parts table.  It is a TA7642.

Pre-Requisites

You'll need the following extras to make the kit:

* A small, 2mm flat blade radio screwdriver and a small cross-head

screwdriver, solder, soldering iron, and small wire cutters.
* Some glue to fit the speaker
* Some flux-cored solder and it will help if you've done a bit of
soldering before.
* A magnifying lens for looking at the components.

pictures to see a full-size version.

IC1 is an small outline IC (SOIC) surface mount device (SMD).  Don't

panic.  SMD technology is sometimes considered to be beyond the
realm of home construction and the modern parts certainly are.  This
size of component is from the 1980's and with a bit of care is easily
hand soldered without a special soldering iron, though I'd recommend
some kind of magnifying lens if you have one.  Start by placing the part
over the outline on the copper pads,... etc etc.
