What is a Power System?

• A system dedicated to the business of
electric power:
– Generation (Production)
– Transmission (Transportation)
– Distribution (Retailing)
• A “Mission Critical System” that provides a
vital service to the society &, as such, should
be operated with the goal of achieving:
– Highest reliability standards
– Minimum environmental impacts
– Lowest operation cost

Distribution

Lecture No. 1: Electrical Power System --- An Introduction

EE ------ Power System Analysis

Power Distribution
• Receives electrical energy from the HV/MV
levels at bulk power delivery points
• Supplies energy to customers:
– At standard voltage levels
– Single phase and/or three-phase
• Is made up of the following main equipment:
– Distribution transformers (DXF)
– Feeder sections (including underground cables)
Switches, fuses, reclosures
– Automatic load transfers
– Etc.

Key Operational Goals

• Power Balance: Generation must remain

balanced with demand
– Total Generation (t) = Total Demand (t)

• System Security: Equipment power flows

must not exceed equipment ratings, under
normal or a single outage condition:
– |pij(t)| < pij max

must remain within its operational range
– f min < f(t) < f max
– 59.5 Hz < f(t) < 60.5 Hz
– 49.5 Hz < f(t) < 0.5 Hz
Voltage Regulation: Bus voltages must
remain within their operational limits

EE ------ Power System Analysis

PS Organization
• Power Utility Structures:
Traditional
– Restructured (Deregulated)
• Traditional utilities:
– Operate as Monopolies (have “captive customers”)
– Have been “regulated” by the government
– Have to get regulators approval for rate increases
– Have little room to increase generation efficiency
– Have largely moved toward “Vertically Integrated”
(VI) business structures for improved profitability

Power Industry Deregulation

• Has necessitated break-up of traditional
utility VI structures into independent
business units:
– Gencos (Generating Companies)
– Power Marketers
– Transco (Transmission Company – Owner)
– Independent System Operator (operating
the transmission network)
– Retail Service Providers
– Discos (Distribution Companies)

Deregulated PS Structure
• Has been legislated by governments,
hoping that it results in:
– Increased competition (reduced rates)
– New technology utilization in generation,
Transmission & Distribution
– Influx of Private Capital or Increased
outside investment in PS infrastructure
