Udl Lesson Plan Writing 2 Add A Predicate

This lesson plan is for a 3rd grade writing class. The lesson focuses on teaching students about compound predicates by having them write simple sentences with a predicate and then adding another predicate. Students will first review what a predicate is. Then, working in pairs, they will share sentences about their favorite holiday and add a predicate to their partner's sentence. Next, they will write 4 sentences about a family member, underlining the subject and predicate. The lesson aims to engage students and help them actively listen through partner work while learning to identify predicates in sentences.

During Lesson: (General Guidelines)

Engagement: (5 minutes)

predicate?

Review notes.

Transition: We are continuing to learn about predicates by doing an activity.

Instruction/Exploration: (35 minutes)

· Activity: Add a Predicate- Individually, write a sentence about your favorite
holiday. You will get with a partner and share your sentence. Your partner will
add a predicate to your sentence and it should still make sense. Switch so both
partners get to share. (JS)
· Sentence Stamina- Write 4 sentences about a family member. Underline the
subjects in blue. Underline the predicates in red. (CP)

Transition: We learned how to identify the predicate and label subjects and predicates.

After Lesson: (5 minutes)

· We are going to share examples of our sentences.

· Get a few examples from students.

· Working with a partner can really help us to actively listen, and today it helped us
learn to point out the predicate in the sentences we created about a member in our family.
