Statement of purpose

Management, as I had read once over the internet, is more science than art. Ever since I hardly
knew anything about this science, I have been fascinated about playing roles that involved
management in some sense. I remember vividly, how much I have enjoyed organizing small
surprise birthday parties with my friends. I felt proud taking resposibility, making plans to ensure
things will fall in place. Even such small a thing involved some sort planning, teamwork and
coordination.

The role I intend to play having studied business management is analogous to this just that the
tasks and responsibilities in this case would be much bigger and varied. Taking up an
undergraduate course at Sardar Patel College of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering
provided me with many opportunities to develop my skills and mature as a person. Right from
the 1st year at the institute I began taking active participation in annual cultural fest-SPACE and
sports fest-SPIRIT. In the 2nd year and 3rd year-I organized events 'Make your own kolaveri di'
and 'Hurry up to be Potter'.This experiences helped me to understand how much efforts one has
to take to make an event success.

An avid badminton player that I am, I participated, won and organized many badminton events in
our college. The most special of them was prestigious 'National level Inter-Engineering
badminton tournament-Summit' in 2012.I was involved in selecting a team, getting budget
approved from sports committee, planning a trip to Pune and at the same time focus on my own
game. I was part of organizing team in SPIRIT-2012 & 2013.Really, badminton has helped me
unleash my potential as a manager apart from a good player.

At the same time, in college days, we were exposed to management related subjects like
Manufacturing planning and control, Manufacturing sciences. These subjects gave me broad idea
about operations management, supply chain management and some manufacturing philosophies.
I learnt CPM-PERT techniques in project management and also I learnt about manufacturing
philosophies like JIT, KAIZEN. I found these subjects interesting. I had internship at 'Skoda
automobiles' and I got to know about ways they implement to maintain their product quality and
to improve efficiency of their plant.
I've been working in 'Tata Consulting Engineers’, Mumbai after graduation for 2.5 years. I am
involved Rajasthan Atomic Power Project. During these times, I’ve acquired lot of technical
skills-Pipe stress analysis in CAESAR, Intelligent P&IDs in COMOS, Various 3D modeling
softwares- Navisworks, Catia, Solidworks. I've been preparing bill of material of valves and
often interact with client for procurement activities. But it always fascinated me what goes into
the way they plan material procurement, valve manufacturing schedule, timely delivery at site
and all in a cost efficient manner.

I believe a formal education in Operations Management would help me learn all those nuances
and I will be in a position to plan, organize and supervise the project. It would also build a strong
framework of management skills upon the existing technical foundation I have and give me
everything that is necessary to excel in this field of work.

Operations Management Course at SIMSR is extremely important for me to leverage my

experience and get a head-start in this field of Management. The reason I say this is that five
years down the line I will be leveraging on this knowledge and I would be working in mid
management level.

Recognizing the long term need of the managers, SIMSR has designed the curriculum in such
way that in second year they give the option of choosing inter-disciplinary subjects like CSR,
Competitive strategy, Creativity and Innovation, Managing new venture and many more. As I
aspire to be in the topmost position in the organization in the future, the inter-disciplinary
knowledge will help my transition in the organization smoother. I am aware of the quality and
value that comes along with the name Somaiya. Associating with strong alumni base in SIMSR,I
can gain access to networking jobs and information . I bring with me a strong set of
fundamentals, an aspiration to put in dedicated hard work and most importantly a strong desire to
learn. An admission to your institute would not only be a great honor but also an inspiration to
perform exceedingly well and reach the levels of excellence one would usually associate with
SIMSR.
