NORTH SOUTH UNIVERSITY.
Assalamu alaikum, Good afternoon everyone. I
am Reyadus Salihin. Student of ECE (EEE)
department. Today I’m presenting about a great
cultural personality before all of you. The name
of that great personality is “Selina Hossain “.
She has a great contribution in the emergence of
Bangladesh. There are three reason behind
choosing Selina Hossain as my project’s central
character:
1.She is one of the greatest novelists of
Bangladesh. In her literature she has portrayed
the reasons & context of the crisis of
contemporary social and political conflict in the
Bengali language movement and in the
liberation war.
2.The highlights of Selina Hossain's writings is
the longing for the release of the beleaguered.
3. Her writings were universally accepted by
readers and critics. Specially her writings on the
language movement and liberation war
encouraged and inspired the Bengalis to
participate in the liberation war.
Now I’m going to describe about her
contribution in the emergence of Bangladesh
including her biography.
Selina Hossain who is the author of 40 novels, 7
short stories and 4 essays, is a popular
Bangladeshi fictional novelist in modern Bangla
literature. In her literature she has portrayed
the reasons & context of the crisis of
contemporary social and political conflict in the
Bengali language movement and in the
liberation war. Her Father A.K. Mosharraf
Hossain and Mother Maryam-un-nesa Bokul.
She was the fourth child among her siblings.
This famous novelist was born on June 14, 1947
in Rajshahi.   Although her original ancestral
home was in Hajirpara village of Laxmipur
district, she did not stay there for long. When
her father moved to Rajshahi for employment, it
became Selina's city. Selina was admitted to
Latifpur Primary School in Bogra, In class three.
Afterthat she was admitted in the eighth grade
at Nath Girls School in Rajshahi. She completed
her secondary education from here in 1962.
Later in 1964 she was admitted to Rajshahi
Women's College. She loved to read literature
since her childhood so after completing her high
school education, she was admitted to the
Bangla department of Rajshahi University.
From
From here she completed her undergraduate in
1967 and postgraduate studies in 1968. She
earned an MA degree in Bengali language and
literature from Rajshahi University. Selina
Hossain started her career in 1970 as a research
assistant at the Bangla Academy. She later
taught in government colleges and worked in
the Public Service Commission. As well as
continuing her pen for newspapers. She was the
editor of 'Dhan Shaliker Desh' at the Bangla
Academy. For 20 consecutive years she edited
this magazine. From 1996 to 2004, she was the
first female director of the Bangla Academy.
This venerable writer retired from her career in
2014 after serving as the chairman of
Bangladesh Shishu Academy. In her books, she
wrote about the brutality of the Pakistani
soldiers and the brutal persecution of the
Bengalis. She inspired the Bengalis to take part
in the war of liberation. Throughout her whole
life, she has contributed to the rise of
Bangladesh by writing literature and novels.
Reading her books awakened the rebellious
attitude as well as encouraged the Bengalis and
gave them the courage to fight against the
Pakistani army. especially
Her writings especially her novels and stories
played important roles in the emergence of
Bangladesh. In the freedom of a nation
literature has an important role. We know that
the mirror of literature reflects the way of life of
a nation and a state. Reflects the social, political,
economic, and cultural background of the
country. The word literature is derived from the
word 'sohito'. With means connected, integrated,
beneficial, etc. Literature is a mirror of human
life. Human happiness-sorrow, joy-pain,
confidence-belief, thought consciousness,
Education-culture, tradition, and the History of
a nation are reflected in literature in artistic
beauty. Another name for literature is criticism
of life. As by the words of any nation's literature
freedom-loving nations can be detected. It can be
noticed. The war of liberation had an artistic
effect on our literature. We see in the study of
our literature there are many aspects of
literature. Nature, politics, society, religion, and
a large part of literature is our great liberation
war. Although the journey of liberation war-
based literature is from the seventies, its pace
and role are unique in our literature.
Selina Hossain is the main attraction in our
fiction. The reason is whenever the issue of
liberation war and the language movement is
raised the first name of a writer comes in our
mind and she is Selina Hossain. Selina Hossain
has painted in the canvas of literature with
hundreds of colors in her own glory. Selina
Hossain was one of the pioneers of post-
liberation Bengali fiction and a unique artist.
The people, traditions, culture, and marginal
people of Bangladesh are the main
preoccupations of her writing. From the time of
colonial rule to the present time, all the
deprivations, class discrimination, repression,
and struggle all found a place in her various
works. Her writings have found a place in the
curriculum of various universities in the country
and abroad. her writings have been translated
into several languages. She received many
awards from home and abroad. Selina Hossain is
a fiction writer, and her writing is
multidimensional. Our language movement, our
liberation war is not only fully reflected in her
writings, but it has also got a different
dimension in her writings.
Selina Hossain is a fearless, outspoken,
confident novelist. Bengali fiction has been
enriched by her perceived feelings. In the
creation of analytical literature, the flowing life
has been the main pillar of her literary
inspiration. She had immense affection for the
people who dreamed of a life of social
civilization. She has presented her argument in
Bengali literature in absolute harmony. The
totality of society and attitude has been the main
element of her art. The international recession
of the twentieth century, the multi-faceted
anarchy, instability, and the gradual
impoverishment of the people crushed by the
Colonial ruler of the country, as well as the
various crises and non-existence of social life
have emerged in her writings. Her mental
inclination was to search for the basic truth of
society. Her struggle for self-establishment in
the struggle for middle-class life was
remarkable. Socialist thought, Analytical
introspection has been the keynote of her
literary pursuits. Just as the pessimism of life
tormented her, so the optimism of life become a
jar of her literary pursuits. Her keen focus on
enriching the civilization of the world amazes
us. She never accepted the slavery of instinct but
fought for human rights. Selina Hossain has
taken a prominent place in Bengali modern
literature due to the originality of literary
works. In her novels, as we have seen characters
with traditions, culture, and folklore of Bengal
in that way we have seen the multi-faceted
spread of contemporary social and political
dilemmas. Selina Hossain has not only enriched
us through her writings but also, she has been
involved in various social activities including the
protection of the rights of deprived women.
Discussing Selina Hossain's vast literary
collection in one article is not only impossible
but also an unrealistic endeavour. She has
written several novels about the war of
liberation, including 'Hangor Nodi Grenade'. In
that Novel, the young woman from Haldi Gai
was married to her widowed cousin Gafur. One
child was born across her lap. That child took
birth with a disability. To save the freedom
fighters, she handed over her disable child to the
Pak army. She returned the independence of the
country in exchange for the life of her child.
Her 'Gerila O Birangona' is based on the
liberation war. In 1971, the freedom fighters of
the crack platoon were conducting operations
against the Pak army, and in the Rajarbagh
police line, women were being tortured
unspeakably. We were amazed by reading the
description of those victims in that writing. The
novel 'Nil Moyurer Zoubon' (1982) was written
on the backdrop of the contemporary Charjapod
period of the eighth to tenth centuries. In this
novel, we find many contemporary patterns of
that time. 'Pokamakorer Ghor-Bosoti' was
published in 1986. In Bengali literature, Manik
Bondopadhay's 'Padma Nadir Majhi' is a
significant work on the fishing community. In
that context in her essay, Selina Hossain has
highlighted the lifestyle of the brave fighters on
the banks of the Naaf River. Infinite courage,
fighting life, dreamers, and the dream is woven
across the geographical boundaries. The dream
that flies adding life to life. it tells the history of
the dream of a new life of those fighters of the
Naaf river. 'Katatarer Projapoti' is a novel about
the Tebhaga movement in Nachol. In addition to
the courageous life of the historical character
Ilimitra, there are reflected the ordinary people
who deeply appreciate the feeling of survival,
joy-pain, failure of hope-despair, and success.
These people continue to burn in the fire of
sorrow in the ribs of time and dream of the taste
of family life by tying the pebbles of love. The
novel ‘Kalketu and Fullora’ is based on the
16th-centuries poet Kankan Mukundaram's
Chandimangalthe's main character 'Kalketu and
Fullora’. The novel 'Tanaporen' was published in
1994. It is a complex psychological novel of
world and life. The struggle for survival of
human life with pains, dreams, desires, labour,
sweat, sorrows, and grief is the preoccupation of
this novel. The main attraction of this novel is
the struggle for the survival of the people who
have been swept away by the tidal wave.
‘Gayatri Sondha’ is about the whole territory of
Bangladesh and Bengali life. The Bengali nation
has dreamed of that land for twelve months.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman is involved in the dream of the
nation. Who has given the Bengalis a glorious
dream also given them the courage to survive.
That dream had been shattered by killing the

Mujibur Rahman.
‘Jamuna Nadir Mushaira’ is another impeccable
composition by Selina Hossain. This work is a
wonderful combination of history and literature.
Mirza Ghalib is the origin of this writing. Many
poems and research have been written about
Mirza Ghalib in different languages of different
countries. She has presented another Ghalib in
front of the readers by this ‘Jamuna Nadir
Mushaira’. The novel 'Lara' was published in
2000. Who was the first female instructor pilot
in Bangladesh. Faria Lara died in a plane crash.
Losing this Lara is like a painful chapter in the
writer's life. Lara was the jewel in her eyes, the
treasure of her heart. The writer never got rid of
the pain of losing her, which is noticeable in her
various writings.

Each of her compositions is a mirror of society.

That mirror identifies the bright and dark
aspects of society. She is the possessor of the life
of absolute human consciousness. Her writings
speaks of the recent past of all human beings
beyond the borders of the country.
Selina Hossain has not limited her expression of
deep understanding of life and the world to just
literature, her calm and powerful essays have
enriched our literature and culture with various
thematic compositions.

The background of the novel 'Kath Koylar Chobi'
is a child and worker of a tea garden. That
marginalized population did not receive any
remuneration. Only tea has been produced by
them in their whole life. Exploitation and rule
have been going on like this for centuries on
those peoples. Suddenly a child came and stood
between them to release them from the
exploitation of those rulers. Who was born in the
womb of a woman during the war of liberation.
The baby's father is a Pakistani soldier, and the
baby was given to a foreign couple shortly after
birth, rather not giving to his ailing mother.
They make him a proper human with absolute
compassion. One day he came to Bangladesh in
search of his mother.
‘Kaktaruya (1996)’, is a famous children's novel.
The novel is a glorious document of our history.
It was published in 1997. The novel is set against
the backdrop of the 1971 Liberation War. The
narrator of the novel has beautifully developed
the novel. ‘Kaktaruya’ is the story of a brave
young freedom fighter named Budha.
A village in Bangladesh. Budha is an orphan
living in this village. His siblings died of cholera.
At first, he took shelter in his aunt's house but
when his aunt raised the issue of poverty, he left
the house. The whole village and the hatbazar
were his roaming areas. All the people he knew
became his relatives. One day, when the military
entered the village, they set fire to the shops in
the market. Freedom fighters Ali and Mithu
came to the village in the darkness of one night.
They tell Budha to blow up the school's military
camp. Then Budha got involved in the liberation
war. First, the house of Ahad Munshi, the
chairman of the peace committee, was set on
fire. Then set fire to the Rajakar commander's
house. As he was an orphan child so no one
suspects him behind those firing. Shilpi
Shahabuddin, the leader of the freedom fighters,
gave him the responsibility to blow up the camp
to set the mine. While digging the bunker, he
cleverly planted a mine inside it and came to the
riverbank. This is where Shahabuddin and his
commanders were waiting. As soon as the
Pakistani troops entered the bunker, the entire
camp was blown up by that mine blast.
Shahabuddin and Budha heard the sound while
sitting in the boat on the river. Their expedition
was successful by that little boy Budha.

The novel ‘Juddho’ (1997) begins with the

character Taraman Bibi. When news came that
Major Taher was injured in Kodalkathi,
everyone started shouting and crying - what will
happen to us? Shed tears with Muhib Habildar's
eyes. Seeing his father crying, Taraman raised
his three-knot three-rifle and fired into the air,
saying, "Father, I have not seen the Sector
Commander." What happened to one of his legs?
We still have them. We will continue to fight.
This self-confidence belongs to a woman, a
people's warrior.
Although it was originally written about the
incidents in Sector 11, the incidents in different
parts of the country, cities, and towns have
become the subject of war novels. For example,
in Syedpur, war-torn people were burnt to death
by train to reach the Indian border. That
incident came here. There is no word of despair
anywhere in this novel. That is why the Benu-
Makhan character of the novel dreams anew
from the rubble. Butter picked up the cup in
front of his face. Benu looks amazing in that
light. Benu has no dirt. Leaving the cup, he
grabbed Benu's two hands. Seeing how firm
Benu is.
Benu whispered, াধীনতা িক সাজা কথা?
াধীনতা কত িকছ নয়। হর লাইেগ মন খারাপ করব
ক ানেহ?'

'Agoster Ek Raat' (2013)- is a story of human

tragedy set against the backdrop of the
assassination of Bangabandhu and his family.
Sixty-one witnesses testified in the murder trial.
All of these testimonies of witnesses have been
used throughout the novel in need of a story.
The author, on the one hand, has made up the
story and on the other hand, has presented the
statement and attached the details of the
incident here.

I have learnt from this project are:

1.History of our great language movement &

liberation war in the form of literature.

2.Literature has played an important role by

motivating, inspiring, and providing courage to
the Bengali nation in the language movement
and the war of independence which I have come
to know through this project.

3.Through writings journalists, Novelist and

authors have raised the voice of the Bengali
nation against the rule and exploitation of
Pakistani ruler and army. Their cruelty and
inequality were exposed to the Bengalis which
made the Bengalis desperate to return
independence by participating in the liberation
war.

4.Nobelists and writers have played an

important role in the emergence of independent
& sovereign Bangladesh.
5.Selina Hossain, a time-honoured novelist, has
highlighted Bengali literature before all over the
world.

6.Behind the emergence of Bangladesh lies the

self-sacrifice and hard struggle of many
Bengalis which is impossible to deny.

We are ever grateful to these great men who has

sacrificed their life to give us an independent
country.

That's all for the time being. Hope I have been
