Design of Bolted Direct Shear Connection To BS5950: Rumah Guru Water Tank Tower Diagonal Bracing

This document summarizes the design criteria for a bolted direct shear connection according to BS5950. It describes the bolted connection between diagonal bracing members at a water tank tower. The criteria include minimum bolt spacing, edge distances, and hole diameters. It then provides the load calculations for Groups A and B, determining the shear and bearing capacities of the bolts and connected members to verify the connection is adequate for the 34.6kN design load.

A Criteria on Bolts Arrangement

1) Minimum bolts spacing = = 2.5 x dia 40 mm

2) Maximum bolts spacing in unstiffened
plates in the direction of stress = 14 x t 0 mm
t is the thickness of the thinner
plate connected.
3) Minimum edge & end distance from a
rolled machine-flame cut or planed edge = 1.25 x D 22.5 mm
4) Minimum edge & end distance from a
sheared or hand flame cut edge = 1.40 x D 25.2 mm
D is the hole diameter.
5) Maximum edge distance is = 11 x t x E 0.0 mm
E = (275/Py)^0.5
Py is design strength of steel to BS4360
6) Nominal diameter of holes, D for
bolts up to 22mm diameter = 2 +d
7) Nominal diameter of holes, D for
bolts larger than 22mm diameter = 3 +d
D is the bolt diameter.

B Loading

Load at ULS F = 34.6 KN
