Riemann approaches to the study of
society
Comparative sociology involves comparison of the social processes between
nation states, or across different types of society (for example capitalist and
socialist). ... The danger of this approach is that the different social contexts are
overlooked in the search for supposed universal structures.
Historical sociology is a branch of sociology focusing on how societies develop
through history. It looks at how social structures that many regards as natural are
in fact shaped by complex social processes.
The structural-functional approach is a perspective in sociology that sees society
as a complex system whose parts work together to promote solidarity and
stability. It asserts that our lives are guided by social structures, which are
relatively stable patterns of social behavior. Social structures give shape to our
lives - for example, in families, the community, and through religious
organizations.
Interpretive approaches encompass social theories and perspectives that
embrace a view of reality as socially constructed or made meaningful through
actors' understanding of events. In organizational communication, scholars focus
on the complexities of meaning as enacted in symbols, language, and social
interactions.
Critical theory is a social philosophy pertaining to the reflective assessment and
critique of society and culture in order to reveal and challenge power structures.
The latter sociologist described a theory as critical insofar as it seeks "to liberate
human beings from the circumstances that enslave them."
