POVERTY
WHAT IS POVERTY?
LOOHCS DROFMAL / SSALC ECNEICS LAICOS
Poverty is often viewed as being in a state of insufficient finances but that is not all it’s
YTIVITCA / NRAEL DNA YRT
limited to. An individual who lives in poverty also lacks material resources like food,
clean water, shelter, clothing, health care, education and transportation just to name a
few. Although poverty depends on lots of factors, the major factor of poverty is indeed
money. According to the World Bank, as of 2015, the international poverty line was set
at $1.90 USD. This means that to be considered to be living in poverty, the individual
must be making less than $1.99 USD per day. Other ways that poverty is measured are
nutrition intake, child mortality, years of education, school attendance, cooking fuel,
sanitation, water cleanliness, electricity, and housing

HUMAN RIGHTS
Human rights are rights and freedoms protected by the law that applies to
every individual no matter the race, religion or sex from birth till death.
Human rights cannot be taken away but can be restricted from an

individual if they violate rules or is a national security threat.

HUMAN RIGHTS AND POVERTY
Poverty restricts an individual from safe shelter due to the fact that many do not have the means to afford it. Therefore, those who are
LOOHCS DROFMAL / SSALC ECNEICS LAICOS
living in poverty tend to live in unsafe housing conditions such as unstable infrastructure or not having any sort of shelter. Furthermore,
indigents often do not have access to clean water or food. Oftentimes, their lack of food is caused by the weather as food may be difficult
YTIVITCA / NRAEL DNA YRT
to grow in certain climates. If it is possible for those to acquire water, it is often located far from where their family is inhabiting.
Therefore, children and women are often sent to travel far distances to fetch water. This results in many children not being able to attend
school even if they are fortunate enough to have access to it. In areas of high poverty rate, the chances of having a school are nearly
impossible. Attending school, allows the children to have a fair chance of breaking the cycle of poverty because knowledge may help them
obtain a better position in the future. Moreover, children, especially young girls, are often forced into marriages which violates article 16
of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights regarding marriage and family. In addition, living in poverty mutes the voices of indigents.
They are often ignored by service providers, policymakers, politicians and even by the state who are supposed to protect their rights and
freedoms. The shortfall of their political participation is often what traps them in their cycle of poverty. Lastly, people who are suffering
from poverty have little to no access to healthcare. Their deprivation of resources, capabilities, choices, security and power, frequently
causes them health issues like food poisoning, malnutrition, depression...etc. With no healthcare of any sort, those who fall sick are
commonly left to die. All in all, people who are experiencing poverty are denied their rights, freedom, dignity, necessities, opportunities
and ultimately their recognition as a human being.

SYRIA POVERTY CRISIS
Syria is one of the prime examples of human rights violations caused by poverty. Prior to the war in 2011, Syria was one of
the fastest-growing countries in wealth. However, after the war began the wealth of the country plummeted. Currently,
with an unemployment rate of 55%, more than 80% of those who are living in Syria live below the poverty line. Those who
LOOHCS DROFMAL / SSALC ECNEICS LAICOS
have managed to flee to neighboring countries are not far better off either. In Lebanon, an estimate of 70% of the Syrian
refugees are living under the poverty line and in Jordan, around 93% of the refugees live under the poverty line. In Syria,
SNOITARTSULLI ESEHT TA KOOL
it had been recorded by the U.N that just within January to June of 2019, 51 bomb strikes abolished medical infrastructure
and 74 bomb strikes destroyed schools. Half of the available medical centers that remain in Syria are only partially
operating if at all possible. With the little number of schools remaining, only 33% of Syrian children which equates to
approximately 2 million of them do not attend school. Additionally, 1.3 million children who are attending school are
contemplating dropping out. Children who do not attend school are either taken to participate in child labor, war and
some are married off. The women of the country live in fear of sexual assault daily. Although there are many disasters
occurring in Syria, there have also been numerous volunteers and organizations who have gone to lend a helping hand.
UNICEF has helped repair damaged schools, train teachers and provides homeschooling for children who have no access
to schools. Doctors Without Borders is an organization which have gone to Syria to provide medical aid to those who are
seeking any. Groups such as IRC and World Vision have also sent support such as child care, psychosocial support, cash
vouchers for food and other necessities for the Syrians.
POVERTY IN CANADA
Poverty does not only occur in 3rd world or underdeveloped countries but it also occurs in wealthy nations
like Canada too. In Canada 1 in 7 which is about 4.9 million people live in poverty. 1 in 5 of those are from
LOOHCS DROFMAL / SSALC ECNEICS LAICOS
families of color. Those who are most likely affected by poverty in Canada are women, those with
disabilities (mental and physical), single parents, Indigenous people (First Nation, Métis and Inuit),
?RAELC GNIHTYREVE SI
seniors, children and youth (age 16-24). Approximately 15% of people living in poverty have disabilities
and 95% of those with disabilities and in poverty are women. Those with disabilities also make up 45% of
our homeless population which consists of 235 000 people and 35 000 who may go homeless at any
moment. About 21% percent of single mothers and 7% of single fathers in Canada are raising their children
in poverty. 1 in 5 children live in poverty in Canada and 1 in 2 of them are of Indigenous background. 40%
of Canadian Indigenous children live in poverty and 60% of them are living on reserves. Statics from 2016
show that 1 in 7 of those who were using food banks were children. In 8 of the provinces in Canada except
Newfoundland and Labrador, saw an increase in food bank usage in 2008 and 2016. It is estimated that
15% of seniors live in poverty, though many of them receive pension/retirement benefits, they are not
enough to pay for housing. In addition, over 3 million Canadians can not afford or live in poor housing
conditions.
