Reflective Competency Statement IV

The document summarizes ways that an early childhood educator keeps parents informed and involved. It discusses evaluating children's progress through activities like coloring and problem solving toys, and sharing results with parents. Photos and videos of children at school help show social development and ease parents' worries. Teachers ask questions about children's home lives and watch for any signs of physical risk. The feedback from a family questionnaire confirmed the educator's strengths in learning environment and cognitive development, but also showed a need for improvement in organization, management, and discipline.

Reflective Competency Statement IV

` At the Early Childhood Center, the standard of having positive and productive

relationships with families in the community is met by interactions and the parents’ involvement

in school events. Another way is keeping parents informed of how their child is doing in school,

either with their schoolwork or just playing with other children while at school. We also host

specific days for family members, such as Grandparents Day. Basically the parents participate

with their kids in enjoying school events, and the teachers keep parents up to date with how they

are progressing in their class.

CS IV a: The way that we keep parents up to date with their children’s progress is by

evaluation and collecting the results of tests that the kids accomplish. An example is when the

children practice coloring or drawing, we see their ability to write begin to grow. Or if they play

with toys and are building something, then we are seeing them develop problem solving skills.

We would then share our findings with the parents, and let them know how their child is

progressing, and if there are any areas where they need improvement.

I have also seen the teacher’s take pictures or videos of the kids while they enjoy their

time at school for the parents to see. For the children who are reluctant to leave their parents for

school, some of their parents’ worries can be put to ease when they see that their child enjoys

being at school. This also shows the parents how their child is developing social skills, and

making friends at school. Both of these allow the parents to be updated with their child’s

performance and productivity at school.

CS IV b: Some ways that the teacher’s at the school can be aware of a child’s home life is

by asking the parents questions about how their child performs at home, and by keeping an eye

on the children at school for anything that seems out of place when it comes to their physical

health. Some of the questions we might ask is in what ways does the child learn or interact with
their environment at home. This can help the teacher’s to see how their learning ability improves

or lessens when they are away from school, and what tools are used to help them learn. It can

also help us to ensure that each child is living in a safe and loving environment.

The subject of abuse is something largely known in school, and it’s our job as teachers to

make sure our students feel safe at school and home. When we ask either the students or parents

about their home life, and notice anything new about how a child is behaving, we can assist them

if our help is needed. This means being able to notice any new bruises, strange behaviors,

nervousness, or anything that would show that the child’s safety might be at risk. If there is a risk

of abuse, we could then find a way to protect the child by investigating, whether with a parent

who is also a victim or the child themselves.

CS IV c: When it came to the Family Questionnaire, nothing about the feedback

surprised me, for I could already guess what might have been said. Most of the questionnaire

confirmed things I believed about myself, such as how I do well with providing a proper learning

environment, helping the kids develop cognitive learning, but also how I do need practice when

it comes to teaching the children about discipline. The feedback also showed me that I also need

to work in the area of organization and management in the classroom. As for any new goals the

feedback encouraged me to pursue, I want to become more organized and I want to become more

firm when it comes to discipline. I want to make sure that I am the best aide I can be when it

comes to working with the children at the school.
