Case 3. The DILEMMA: Goodbye, John, Goodbye
1. Is there anything wrong with the manner the shortlist was prepared by Loria?
Yes, there is really a big mistake with the manner of choosing the applicants for
interview and as to how Loria prepared the ten shortlisted applicants. She needs to understand
that it is really important to separate her personal and private life to work. As a professional
recruitment supervisor in the human resources department, she needs to do her work
professionally and expected to evaluate the resumes and applications of the applicants based
on the standards and criterion set by the company. She must set aside her personal biases
because the applicants she eliminated unfairly might be better than those she picked. The
manner of how Loria prepared the shortlisted applicant were all baseless and biased, it might
ruin the credibility and might missed the applicant who has the highest potential to became
high performer and great asset to the company.
2. What do you suggest regarding the preparation of the shortlist?
One of the most crucial position to fill in is the recruitment supervisor in the human
resources department, the company should be very careful in choosing and appointing an
employee for that job. The company needs a recruitment supervisor in the human resources
department that knows how to separate her personal and private life to work. In this case, Ms.
Loria must take a serious commitment to her job and don’t let her personal biases ruin the
company.
She must be very professional in dealing her duties and responsibilities so as not to
sacrifice the quality of her performance and the operations of the company. She must prepare
the shortlist according to the criteria and standards set by the company— 21 to 28 years old,
graduate of B.S. Information Technology, and resident of Cabanatuan City. She must choose
applicants depending on their credibility, talents, and qualifications, not on her personal
interests, biases, and feelings. Hence, she should give utmost consideration to the abilities and
skills of the applicants that could contribute to the success of the company. She might miss the
employee who can be the greatest asset of the company just because she let her personal
biases won in preparing the ten shortlisted applicants.
To sum it up, in shortlisting, we must consider the legal requirements for the vacant
position, necessary skills and experience for it and their ability to adapt in the company’s
culture. Loria must be professional when dealing things in her work. She needs to know their
attitude to see if they can work with their colleagues peacefully. After knowing necessary
details, she can eliminate those applicants who cannot meet the criteria she’s looking for.
