Time Duration: 2 hours and 30 mins.
Session Title: Advantages and Disadvantages of Visual Media

CONTENT STANDARD:

The learner demonstrates understanding of different resources of media and information, their design, principle
and elements, and selection criteria

PERFORMANCE STANDARD:

The learner produces a living museum or electronic portfolio or any other creative forms of multimedia
showcasing their/his/her understanding, insights, and perceptions of the different resources of media and information.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:

1. Describes the different dimensions of visual information and media


2. Comprehends how visual information and media is/are formally produced, organized, and
disseminated
3. Evaluates the reliability and validity of visual information and media and its/their sources using
selection criteria
4. Produces and evaluates a creative visual based presentation using design principle and elements

SPECIFIC LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:


1. Create an instructional material which is visual in nature using design principle and elements which
can be used in an information drive campaign of a non-government organization.

MATERIALS: LCD Projector, computer/laptop, pictures, manila paper, permanent markers.

Directions: Group yourselves with 5 members. Give comments on the pictures presented based on the guide
questions provided.

2. The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups and let them answer the following comprehension questions
through carousel brainstorming
:
• What are the effects of visual Media to children based from the video clip?
• What concerns the parents raised on the effects of visual media?
• Do you think censorship is needed in all forms of visual media? Why? Why not?
• In your opinion, is the exposure of children to visual media harmful or useful? Why?
• How can you minimize the negative effects of visual media?
• What sort of advice could you give on the use of visual media?

The teacher will discuss on the following:

Possible Advantages:
 Helpful to present information to illiterate audiences
 Stimulate oral communication since people may still need to explain the data
 Easy way to relay information because it makes use of universal cues
 Complex information is presented graphically which makes it easier for people to interpret the message
 Quick way for the audience to visualize what you are saying -- numbers, trends, up or down

 Forceful -- emphasizes main point
 Convincing -- proves a point, see and hear
 Compact way to convey information
 More interesting than just talk or print 
 Allows you to see the information, making it easier to retain. 
 Facilitates open communication, leading to enhanced information discovery and delivery.
 Provides an opportunity to widen business campaigns.
 Targets a wide audience, making it a useful and effective recruitment tool.
 Saves time in relaying the message
 Helps show the report's complete details in its perfect image, faster and easier. 
 Enhances resourcefulness and creativity

Possible Disadvantages:
 Visual information may be very limiting because of cost preparation, the cost of preparation, the complexity of
certain images and graphics, and the lack of familiarity of the audience to interpret the information
 Multiple meanings can be generated to different audiences
 Time consuming to make -- decisions must be made in advance for layout, color, materials, etc.
 Technical in nature -- audience knowledge to interpret, or understand
 Costly -- depending on the medium used
 Television makes negative effect for children’s health and behavior.
 Children who observe violence on Visual media are likely to act or imitate what they see.

ABSTRACTION (30 mins)

Activity 1: Group yourselves with 5 members. Accomplish the graphic organizer showing the Advantages and
Disadvantages of visual media your group is assigned to work on. Write as many as you can in bullets form.

Activity 2: Reporting and critiquing of outputs

APPLICATION (60 mins)

Directions: Perform the given task in GRASPS.

Goal: Your goal is to teach basic computer skills through an instructional material which is predominantly visual
so that the audience would have a better sense of things you are going to teach
Role: You are a volunteer tutor/educator for an international humanitarian organization
Audience: Elementary school pupils in Africa who are not well versed in English
Situation: You are a volunteer tutor/educator for an international humanitarian organization and you are assigned to
teach basic computer literacy skills to young children in Africa
Product: A creative visual instructional material in teaching basic computer skills to young children using any
presentation software (MS Powerpoint, Prezi, etc.)
Standards: Evaluate your own instructional material if it follows the design principle and elements of a graphics
media. The output will be rated according to the criteria stated in a given Rubric.
