OBJECTIVES:
Content: Students will be able to identify their culture and the characteristics associated with
their culture
I can Identify the culture I associate myself with and list characteristics about that culture
Language: Students will be able to compare one’s culture to a classmate with a different
culture
I can compare my culture to a culture different from my own
LEARNING STRATEGIES: cognitive: consciously making connections between personal
experiences, beliefs, and feeling and what is learned

MATERIALS: SMARTboard, Social Studies Notebooks, Graphic organizer, crayons, The Name
Jar by Yangsook Choi
MOTIVATION:
(Building background)
Teacher will read the book The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi
After the read aloud, the teacher will ask if anyone knows what the word culture means.
PRESENTATION:
(Language and content objectives, comprehensible input, strategies, interaction, feedback)
Teacher will show the Flocabulary video on culture.
Teacher will have students think-pair-share on what they now think the word culture means
Teacher will then regroup the students and ask what the groups came up with for the word culture.
Students will copy the word culture and the definition into their notebooks and draw a picture that
goes along with the definition.

PRACTICE AND APPLICATION
(Meaningful activities, interaction, strategies, practice and application, feedback)
Students will receive a graphic organizer about the culture of their choice to fill out.
After filling out graphic organizer, students will think-pair-share their answers with their classmates,
comparing their culture to a different culture.
REVIEW/ASSESSMENT:
(Review objectives and vocabulary, assess learning)
Students will come up in pairs and present their cultures and how they differ from their peer’s
culture.
EXTENSION:
Learn about the culture of the Shinnecock Indians by having the librarian come into class to talk
about the culture. The Shinnecock Indian Reservation is right in the heart of Southampton making it
a very close connection to home for many students.
