The document describes four science stations for students to complete experiments and activities. At Station 1, students will diagram organisms in an ecosystem and construct a pyramid of numbers. Station 2 involves mixing chemicals to inflate a balloon. Station 3 tests solutions to identify acids and bases using indicators. Finally, Station 4 separates a mixture using physical methods like filtration and magnets. The stations allow students to learn about interdependence in ecosystems, chemical reactions, acid-base properties, and separation techniques through hands-on activities.

According to the Kinetic Theory of

Matter, matter is made up of discrete
particles which are atoms or
molecules. Particles of matter are not
visible by the naked eye but we can
show that matter is made up of
particles. The three states of matter
are solid, liquid and gas.

STATION 3 Mr. Acid and Mrs. Alkali ( 10 minutes )
INTRODUCTION

Acid and alkali are very useful substances in our daily lives. The word ‘acid’ comes from
the Latin word ‘acidus’, which means sour. Acid is present in fruits and items we use
daily. Alkali is a substance with a bitter taste and soapy feel. There are acids and alkalis
in the laboratory. Many household products contain acids and alkalis too. For example,
car batteries contain sulphuric acid and household cleaners contain alkalis.

TASK

Carry out the following activity:

Task 1
1. There are 6 solutions labeled P,Q, R, S, T, U in the beaker.
2. Pour 5 ml of each solution into test tubes according to the labels.
3. Add 3 drops of universal indicator into each test tube and shake slowly.
4. Observe and record the colour of the mixture.
5. Dispose the mixture and rinse the test.

Task 2
1. Measure 3 ml of solution Q and 3 ml of solution S. Pour them in two different test
tubes.
2. Add solution Q to solution S. Shake the mixture slowly.
3. Add 3 drops of universal indicator into the mixture.

Ali notices some holes in a water tank on his uncle farm. The water is leaking
faster from some holes than from others. He wonders why this is so. The aim of
this experiment is to find an answer to this question.

TASK : Carry out the following activities to help Ali to find out the answer.

Materials/Apparatus
• 2 milk cans with different sizes of hole labelled A and B
• Stopwatch
• A pail of water

Procedure
1 Hold your finger over the hole of can A .
2 Fill the can with water.
3 Time how long it takes for the water to run out and empty the can.

1
In our daily life , the term work usually means doing a job. When we do work, we
use energy. In science, we say work is done when a force moves an object
through a distance in the same direction as the force.
Po Power is the amount of work done per unit time.

Task:
Carry out this activity at the located staircase.
Working with a partner, you are required to determine
(a) the work done and
(b) the power used when the student climb up the stairs.

Materials/Apparatus
• Metre rule
• Measuring tape
• Stop watch
• Weighing machine

Procedure
1. Measure the vertical height of a staircase in metre.
2. Weigh yourself in kilogramme and change it to newtons.
(I kg weight = 10 N)
3. Holding a stop-watch , record the time you take to run up the flight of
stairs as quickly as you can.
4. Record the results in the table provided and calculate the power you
used in running up the stairs.

Question
1 What is the unit of power?

2 How can the power be increased when you climb up the stairs?
