Key Concepts
Dielectric Properties of advanced materials
• Advanced materials/Nanoparticles
• Dielectric nanoparticles
• Types of dielectric materials
– Paraelectricity
– Ferroelectricity
• Applications of dielectrics
3
Advanced materials
• Advanced materials typically have properties
that are superior to and outperform
conventional materials in their applications.
4
Nanomaterials/nanoparticles
• Nanoparticles are particles between 1 and 100 nanometers
(nm) in size.
• In nanotechnology, a particle is defined as a small object
that behaves as a whole unit with respect to properties.
• Particles of any shape with dimensions in the 1 x 10-9 and
1 x 10-7 m range are called nanoparticles or nanomaterials.

Ferroelectricity
• Ferroelectricity is a characteristic of certain
materials that have a spontaneous electric
polarization that can be reversed by the
application of an external electric field.
10
Paraelectricity
• Paraelectricity is the ability of many materials
(specifically ceramics) to become polarized
under an applied electric field.
• An example of a paraelectric material of high
dielectric constant is strontium titanate.
11
Applications of dielectrics
• Used in Capacitors
• Barium strontium titanate (BST), a ferroelectric thin
film, studied for the fabrication of radio frequency
and microwave components, such as voltage-
controlled oscillators, tunable filters, and phase
shifters.
• Mineral oil is used inside electrical transformers as a
fluid dielectric and to assist in cooling.
• Dielectric fluids with higher dielectric constants, such
as electrical grade castor oil, are often used in high
voltage capacitors to increase capacitance.
12
Applications of dielectrics
• Some ionic crystals and polymer dielectrics
exhibit ferroelectric effect.
• Ferroelectric materials have very high
dielectric constants, making them quite useful
for capacitors.
