1) General Functional Description and Application
The AUMATIC control unit serves to control changes of the bulk material level of a pan
conveyor/bucket apron conveyor. The actual material quantity can be established from
the weight of the conveyed material. If the max. load is exceeded, the conveying speed
of the pan conveyor will be increased (single-stage) until the max. material level will be
undercut again. As soon as the material level allows for the speed of the pan conveyor
to be reduced again, it will continue to run at high speed for another 10 seconds before
returning to slow speed. The switching tresholds for the switch-over from low to high
speed and vice versa can be changed at and read-off the unit.
Please note: The installation and commissioning must be carried out by qualified
personnel. Please discuss any changes of the parameters with AUMUND prior to
implementation.
2) Structure of Signal Processing Unit
2.1 Electrical structure
The electrical signal (4.. 20 mA) from a pressure capsule/load cell as input signal. Like
the output, the signal input is isolated via optocoupler. If the permissible load is
exceeded, the conveyor speed will be increased. When switching over to high speed, a
new switching threshold will be automatically activated through which the speed can be
reduced again. The value of each threshold can be controlled via LCD (liquid-crystal
display).
The up-to-date load condition (normal operation/exceeding of max. limit) will be
indicated internally by a bistable electric signal and a relay. It suffices to connect one of
either outputs with the control. To increase the operational reliability some of the
sources of error will be monitored. As soon as a fault has been detected, the device will
switch to „overload“ and the error will be indicated by a red LED at the signal
processing unit.
The connection of the device to other equipment will be implemented via 16 screw
terminals. This terminal strip is installed in a separate area within the overall housing.
Terminal strips can be divided into three sections: the first section - terminals 1 to 3 -
allows the energy supply to the signal processing unit. The second section - terminals
4 to 11 - serves as control of the conveyor. The third section - terminals 12 to 16 -
serves as interface to the sensor. The exact allocation is set out in the table below.

2.2) Structure
The individual components (signal processing unit, power supply unit and terminal
strip) are installed in a lockable overall housing. This housing also contains the display,
the potentiometers to set the switching thresholds and 2 control LEDs.

3) Assembly and Commissioning
The housing will be installed at a suitable position with clips. The external connections
can be entered into the terminal strip (5) after removal of the lower housing cover. As
regards the commissioning, standard values will be pre-set as upper and lower
switching thresholds.
After connecting the cables for supply, sensor interface and control interface (please
bear in mind that it suffices to connect the electrical output or the relay output to the
control) the device is ready for operation. The LED at the power supply unit (1) should
be green and the LCD (6) should indicate the selected electrical value.
If the red error LED (3) lights up, the device detected a fault. In this case, the
correctness of the cabeling and the status of the sensor should be checked first. The
applicable safety regulations concerning the commissioning of electrical devices must
be observed.
4) Setting and Display
A rotary control switch (2), two potentiometers (4) and a LCD (6) will serve as system
setting and display. The rotary control switch serves to select the respective amperage
reading: a) current, b) high=threshold setting high (faster) c) low=threshold setting
slower speed. During normal operation, the rotary control switch should be set at
„current“. This way the output current of the sensor can be established at any time and,
ultimately, the current load condition of the equipment. The set thresholds should not
be changed.
The system processing unit allows a variable setting of the upper and lower switching
threshold. To change these thresholds, firstly the display of the required threshold has
to be selected on the rotary control switch. By turning the potentiometer to the required
threshold, the respective threshold may be modified. The potentiometers are positioned
behind the front screen. Therefore, an adjustment by accident is not possible.
The displayed electrical value depends on the position of the rollers on the measuring
rail:
Rail joint (8) Load cell (9) Measuring rail (10) Roller (11) Rail joint (12)
When moving the roller (11) along the measuring rail (10), a periodic vibrating electrical
signal will be generated:

If the signalmaximum exceeds the upper threshold the signal „faster“ will be triggered.
The conveyor runs fast and the green LED „fast mode“ (7) lights up. To maintain the
fast mode, the signal must drop below the lower threshold within 10 seconds. If this is
not effected, the conveyor will drop into the slow mode again.
If the signalmaximum also drops below the lower threshold, the signal „slower“ appears
after 10 seconds and the conveyor will return to normal operation.

For the setting of the thresholds it is imperative to observe the „current“ reading on the
display during normal operation to establish the signalmaximum/signalminimum. The
upper threshold should be approximately 1 mA above the signalmaximum. The lower
threshold should be approximately 0.5 mA above the signalminimum. Furthermore, it is
important to establish whether undesired operating states occur. If there are undesired
reactions of the control, the measures described in the table below will be of assistance
for the adjustment of the thresholds.
