Executive summary
The main aim of this proposal is to summarize the information required to propose design
considerations and layout a tentative project timeline. In the beginning, this proposal tries to
give an overall introduction about hydraulic riveting machine including its significance and
application areas.
The body of the proposal focuses on outlining project objectives and description of the
hydraulic riveting press machine. It also proposes design and modeling methods with reasonable
timeline (schedule of work) in mind.
Introduction
A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener that provides an effective way to fasten two
materials together without welding, adhesives, or any specialty tools or skills. The rivet machine
is the common equipment in riveting car production line and has advantages of simple structures,
high reliability, and fast production.

A hydraulic riveting machine is mainly used in all kinds of industry with riveting parts
such as automobiles, boats and aircraft structures. Automotive rivets can be used for structural
repairs such as attaching a slip-on rocker panel over top of an existing rocker panel, mounting of
plastic bumper covers and other accessories.

Types of riveting machines
a. Impact riveting: set the rivet by driving the rivet downwards, through the materials to be
joined and on into a forming tool (known as a rollset).
b. Orbital riveting: have a spinning forming tool (known as a peen) which is gradually
lowered into the rivet which spreads the material of the rivet into a desired shape
depending upon the design of the tool.
c. Radial (Spiral form) riveting: is subtly different from orbital forming. In most cases
however, where high-quality joints are demanded, the radial riveting technology is the
appropriate procedure due to the low cycle time, the little force needed and the high
quality results obtained.
d. Roller form riveting: is a subset of orbital forming. It uses the same powerhead as
orbital forming but instead of a peen has multiple wheels that circle the work piece and
combine two similar or non-similar materials together with a seamless and smooth gentle
bonding via downward pressure as the rollers move downward or inward on the piece.
e. Automatic drilling and riveting machine: these machines take the automation one step
farther by clamping the material and drilling or countersinking the hole in addition to
riveting. They are commonly used in the aerospace industry because of the large number
of holes and rivets required to assemble the aircraft skin.
Advantages and disadvantages of riveting
Advantages
Very durable - The number one reason for why rivets remain a popular fastening method is
the fact that they are extremely durable, especially against shear forces. Moreover, the zero-
clearance characteristic of rivets installation means that they are less prone to wearing out
due to vibrations. This is very critical for many of the applications of rivets, such as in
automobiles, aircraft, and bridges.
Easy to install - Despite advances in manufacturing technology, the process of rivet
installation remains practically the same as it was hundreds of years ago. For rivet
installation around the house, a standard hammer will be enough to do the job.
Disadvantages
Creates a permanent connection - The permanence of rivets can be seen as an advantage, but
it can also hamper maintenance or repair works. Once a rivet has been installed, it pretty
much stays in place unless it gets destroyed by drilling through. For equipment and
structures that require regular maintenance, this characteristic of rivets can make the job
more difficult and time-consuming. For structures and equipment that will require frequent
disassembly and maintenance, bolted joints with less permanence may be more suitable.
Application Areas
Riveting machines are used in a wide range of applications including brake linings for
commercial vehicles, aircraft, and locomotives, textile and leather goods, metal brackets,
window and door furniture, latches and even mobile phones. Many materials can be riveted
together using riveting machines including delicate and brittle materials, and sensitive electrical
or electronic components.
In particular hydraulic riveting found its application in the following areas:
1. Frame manufacturing for heavy-duty vehicles, buses, light-duty vehicles and farm
vehicles etc.
2. Rivet the side frame, core plate, draft lug, striker and side pillar edge beam of
open car, railway vehicle, tank car for railway vehicles
3. Assembly for bridge steel structure
4. Fastening for air blower blade
5. Riveting of tramcar
6. It can be used for punching, press-fitting, print and forming when assembling
corresponding device.
Comparing with traditional pneumatic riveting, hydraulic riveting machine has following
advantages:
- The working condition is good, no noise, operation is agility, labor intensity is low, rivet
speed is high, and the production efficiency is high.
Project Description
The project is about Design of Hydraulic Riveting Machine which adopts full hydraulic
drive and control. A hydraulic rivet press machine is a machine press that joins two pieces of
work by a rivet using a hydraulic cylinder to generate a compressive force. Therefore, using a
hydraulic pressure, it performs cold riveting directly.
The hydraulic riveting machine consists of the following system structure parts:
- Hydraulic station (pumping station, high pressure hose and valves),
- Rivets and riveting power hydraulic tank,
- Linkage and small parts,
- Rivet clamp and sling,
- Tackle and slide rail, working oil cylinder, accessories.
The central control part of a high-speed hydraulic riveting machine is the hydraulic pump station,
and its performance influences the normal production.
How the Hydraulic Riveter works?
The hydraulic press works on the Pascal's principle which is that the pressure throughout a
closed system is constant. One part of the system is a piston acting as a pump, with modest
mechanical force acting on a small cross-sectional area; the other part is a piston with a larger
area which generates a correspondingly large mechanical force.
The locating sleeve on the ram is positioned over the manufactured rivet head.
The ram advances, bringing the C-frame anvil up against the plate with its U-slot
surrounding the offset rivet head. The ram continues advancing, punching out the
rivet.
The ram returns, carrying the rivet head which is stripped from the punch when
the ram is fully retracted.
Problem statement
Manually operated riveting is hard to operate and lacks consistency, good finish and
productivity. This method of riveting also is impossible to achieve higher riveting forces which
some type of rivets may require. Therefore, the manufacturing industry requires a riveting
machine which offers better finish, consistency and productivity with higher riveting force
capacity and ease of operation. The major vehicle assembly industries in Ethiopia like Bishoftu
Automotive and Mesfin Industrial Engineering as well as manufacturing industries should be
equipped with better riveting machines that can potentially enhance productivity by eliminating
too much redundancy and overlapping.
Objectives
Main objective
The main objective of this project is to design a hydraulic rivet press machine.
Specific objectives
Design hydraulic cylinder.
Design hydraulic system.
Design structure of the hydraulic press machine.
Develop an appropriate CAD model for the machine.
Scope
The scope of this project is limited between the range of the problem statement up to the
embodiment design of the hydraulic rivet press machine, including necessary modelling and
designing of the assembly and the components of the device.
Methodology
Design methodology begins with a design process model that can be used to develop
product specifications. It is apparent that the development process is commonly regarded as a
logical sequence of phases in which tasks are completed.
The methodology followed towards this project is listed as follows.
