Rational Choice Activity
Worksheet 1
Under Pressure
Proceed to the Job Not Proceed to the
Interview Interview
Rush to your A B
sister/brother
To not rush to C D
your
sister/brother
Processing Share your output with your classmates. Did you make
Questions the same choice or decision? Why or why not?
=Some of us did not have the same decisions. I believe it is
because we have different perspectives and priorities prior in
making decisions. Also, people tend to vary in reactions when
it comes to pressured situations.
How was the whole experience of assessing your
options? Was it difficult? Was it easy?
=It was difficult. Because both are important for me. Making an
impulsive decision will either way cause me some difficulty. It’s
like choosing between two things to sacrifice.
Would you say that you applied rationality when
making that final choice or decision?
=I would say, I did. Because I thought thoroughly about the
possibilities and certainties. I tried to be reasonable enough to
choose what is more convenient and smart,
without making a decision harming the other.
Instructions: Read the scenario below and answer the
questions that follow using the worksheet.
Here is the scenario. You are on your way to an important job
interview that is given only to shortlisted applicants which
include you. You have waited long for this job interview and
prepared a lot for it. To miss the interview is to miss a very
good chance at a job opportunity that you have dreamed of
since you were a kid. You are very excited and hopeful that
you will get hired. You are on your way to the job interview
when suddenly you receive a call from your younger
sister/brother asking for your help. Your sister/brother seems
confused and sounds unintelligible over the phone, and you
are worried! To add the dilemma, your sister/brother is a
person with disability (PWD)
Your questions: what will you do? Would you rush to your
sister/brother and forget about the job interview? Or would
you ignore the distress call and proceed to the interview and
pretend you never received the call? Or do you have any
other options?
Answer:
First I would panic of course, I love my brother. But then I
would calm down and think of possible solutions to solve the
problem. A person with disability should not be left
unattended, with that I assume my parents or a relative is with
him. I would call someone to check on him and his
whereabouts. If it is confirmed that he is doing well and it’s just
a simple problem, - I would proceed with the interview. If not,
and he is missing, I would leave the interview and proceed
home to search and check on him.
I believe this is the most rational decision I’ve made. Either way
I would have no regrets making such a decision. Sacrificing the
other would cost no harm. I dreamed for the job, I would
secure it if I have a choice. I love my brother, I would not trade
his safety with anything in this world.
