Rubber and Sealants Market Survey
Buna N rubber
Buna N rubber (also known as standard Nitrile rubber) is a synthetic rubber compound comprising
acrylonitrile and butadiene – two copolymers. Because acrylonitrile is a volatile organic liquid, when it
mixes with butadiene (a synthetic chemical compound) a reaction occurs, producing Buna N rubber.
Market Needs
In the year 2005, worldwide consumption of NBR had reached almost 368,000 metric tons annually and
the global market for nitrile butadiene rubber has been forecast to exceed 645 thousand tons by the year
2017.
Properties
• The physical and chemical properties of nitrile rubber vary depending on the polymer’s composition of
acrylonitrile.
• Different grades are available for this rubber. The higher the acrylonitrile content within the polymer,
the higher the oil resistance.
• It is generally resistant to fuel and other chemicals.
• It can withstand a range of temperatures.
• It has inferior strength and flexibility, compared to natural rubber.
• It has high resilience and high wear resistance but only moderate strength.
• It has limited weathering resistance.
Manufacturing
NBR is produced in an emulsion polymerization system. The water, emulsifier/soap, monomers (butadiene
and acrylonitrile), radical generating activator, and other ingredients are introduced into the
polymerization vessels. The emulsion process yields a polymer latex that is coagulated using various
materials (e.g. calcium chloride, aluminium sulfate) to form crumb rubber that is dried and compressed
into bales. Some specialty products are packaged in the crumb form.
Applications
• Hydraulic hoses
• Conveyor belting
• Seals for all kinds of plumbing and appliance applications
• Extruded hose or tubing
• Calendared sheet goods (floor mats and industrial belting)
EPDM
EPDM rubber or Ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber is one of the most popular types of synthetic
rubber. EPDM rubber is an elastomer- a high-density rubber that is very durable and has a wide range of
applications. An Introduction to EPDM Rubber EPDM rubber or Ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber
is used for many purposes. Considered to be the most water resistant rubber among all types of rubber,
EPDM rubber is widely used for manufacturing of sheeting used at high temperatures. In fact, EPDM
rubber is one of the most commonly used and fastest growing synthetic rubbers having both general
purpose and specialty applications.
Market Needs
There has been increased demand for EPDM rubber in automotive, construction, and mechanical goods
applications. The rubber consists of ethylene and propylene and diene and hence abbreviated as EPDM.
This rubber has some inherent features that make it especially suitable for electrical insulation, gaskets and
lamination.
Properties
• EPDM rubber has excellent resistance to atmospheric aging meaning it is heat, ozone and weather
resistant
• It has a good resistance to most water-based chemicals.
• EPDM rubber also has a great resistance to abrasives and tearing.
• It has stable, saturated polymer backbone structure.
• It has good electrical resistivity.
• It has excellent flexibility at high and low temperatures.
• EPDM rubber can be finished to an extremely smooth surface
• It has resistance to solvents and high temperatures too.
Manufacturing
Polymerization and catalyst technologies in use today provide the ability to design EPDM rubber to meet
specific and demanding application and processing needs. Properties of EPDM Rubber There are many
properties of ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber or the EPDM rubber which makes it one of the
most popular synthetic rubber.
Applications
Since EPDM rubber does not crack outdoors, it is widely used for seals in buildings and in the automotive
industry. Some other applications are steam hose, high temperature-resistant seals and roll covers.
This has resulted in broad usage of EPDM rubber in following industries:
• Glass-run channel
• Garden and appliance hose
• Tubing
• Electrical insulation
• Roofing membrane
Vinyl rubber
Vinyl rubber consists ethylene vinyl acetate known as EVA is the copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate.
The weight percent vinyl acetate usually varies from 10 to 40% with the remainder being ethylene. It is a
polymer that approaches elastomeric materials in softness and flexibility, yet can be processed like other
thermoplastics.
Market needs
The growing demand for EVA material in various industries has led to the installation of new production
capacity. DuPont is the world’s largest EVA production capacity in 2015. The installed capacity was 400 k
tons. The second largest company was Hanwha Chemical with an installed capacity of 310 k tons followed
by ExxonMobil with 260 k tons capacity.
Properties
The material has good clarity and gloss, barrier properties, low-temperature toughness, stress-crack
resistance, hot-melt adhesive water proof properties and resistance to UV radiation.
Manufacturing
A process for manufacturing an ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) sole that involves weighing moulding
compounds for manufacturing the sole. The moulding compounds include, by weight, 65-75% of ethylene
vinyl acetate pellets, 3-5% of blowing agents, 20-30% of fillers, and 1-2% of crosslinking agents. The
moulded compounds are mixed, and extruded by means of a twin screw extruder so as to form a web of
unfoamed extruded output. The web is cut into sheets.
Applications
Acoustic Sealants
Reduce sound transmission in partition systems and maintain specific STC values for sealant
spaces around cut-outs and at partition perimeters. And sound proof a space.
Applications
• Between window and door frames and the wall
• In corners or between walls & ceilings
• Between cabinets and cupboards
• Perimeter sealing of windows, door and skylights

Firestop barrier sealants
They are those sealants that stop fire from penetrating or catching on further materials or
entering through gaps. Fire sealants are used for small gaps/openings or building joints.
Applications
• Door Frames
• Tested for long life with Gamma radiation.
• Suitable for Large penetration and opening.
• Used for Pipes, Cable bundles, Cable trays, Air ducts, Busways, multiple penetration.
• rating up to 2 hours.
• Weather Stripping; Protects And Repairs Electrical Wiring

Polyisobutylene Asphalts With bitumen
It is a sticky and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It may be found in natural deposits
or may be a refined product, and is classed as a pitch.
Applications
• Used to fill gaps in roads
• Coverings of manhole
• Waterproof – suitable for internal and external applications
• Between benchtops and tiles
• Structural attachment of many panel systems
• painted metal, EIFS, granite and other stone, concrete, brick and plastics

Non-Curing Butyl Sealant
Non-Curing Butyl Sealant provides adhesion and a permanent seal between concealed end-laps, metal roof
panels, standing seam roof panels, ridge cap, wall panels, and other applications requiring a non-hardening
weather seal.
Offers permanent flexibility, high moisture resistance, and the ability to absorb sound and movement.
Application
• Kitchen and bathroom counter top/solid surface and sanitary seals
• Non-structural glazing
• Excellent adhesion to non-porous surfaces such as glass, stainless steel and ceramics & plastic baths
and fittings.

Manufacturing
The most common manufacturing method for polyurethane sealants and adhesives is to charge the raw
materials, either manually or through an automated handling system, into a high-intensity batch mixer.
Often a two-step or moisture-curable prepolymer approach is used
