Testing Instruments For Maintaining And Repairing Electronically
Controlled Domestic Appliances. (Washing Machine)

1. Use and function of tools, equipment and testing instruments
2. Operation of equipment and testing instruments
MODULE
TOOLS & MATERIALS USED IN DIAGNOSING AND TROUBLESHOOTING A
WASHING MACHINE
1. SCREWDRIVER
A screwdriver is a tool, manual or powered, used for screwing (installing) and
unscrewing (removing) screws. A typical simple screwdriver has a handle and a shaft,
ending in a tip the user puts into the screw head before turning the handle. This form of
the screwdriver has been replaced in many workplaces and homes with a more modern
and versatile tool, a power drill, as they are quicker, easier, and also can drill holes.
2. PLIERS
Pliers are a hand tool used to hold objects firmly, possibly developed
from tongs used to handle hot metal in Bronze Age Europe. They are also useful
for bending and compressing a wide range of materials. Generally, pliers consist of a pair
of metal first-class levers joined at a fulcrum positioned closer to one end of the levers,
creating short jaws on one side of the fulcrum, and longer handles on the other side. This
arrangement creates a mechanical advantage, allowing the force of the hand's grip to be
amplified and focused on an object with precision. The jaws can also be used to
manipulate objects too small or unwieldy to be manipulated with the fingers.
3. SOLDERING IRON
A soldering iron is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle.
Heating is often achieved electrically, by passing an electric current (supplied through an
electrical cord or battery cables) through a resistive heating element. Cordless irons can
be heated by combustion of gas stored in a small tank, often using a catalytic
heater rather than a flame. Simple irons less commonly used today than in the past were
simply a large copper bit on a handle, heated in a flame.
4. MULTI-TESTER
A multimeter or a multitester, also known as a VOM (volt-ohm-milliammeter), is
an electronic measuring instrument that combines several measurement functions in one
unit. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, current, and resistance. Analog
multimeters use amicroammeter with a moving pointer to display readings. Digital
multimeters (DMM, DVOM) have a numeric display, and may also show a graphical bar
representing the measured value. Digital multimeters have rendered analog multimeters
obsolescent, because they are now lower cost, higher precision, and more physically
robust.
5. WIRE STRIPPER
A wire stripper is a portable handheld tool used by workers, especially
electricians, for removing the protective coating of an electric wire in order to replace or
repair the wire. It is also capable of stripping the end portions of an electric wire in order
to connect them to other wires or to terminals.
6. WRENCH
Wrench, also called spanner, tool, usually operated by hand, for tightening bolts
and nuts. Basically, a wrench consists of a stout lever with a notch at one or both ends for
gripping the bolt or nut in such a way that it can be twisted by a pull on the wrench at
right angles to the axes of the lever and the bolt or nut. Some wrenches have ends with
straight-sided slots that fit over the part being tightened; these tools are known as open-
end wrenches and are made in various sizes to fit specific bolt and nut sizes.
7. DESOLDERING PUMP
A desoldering pump, colloquially known as a solder sucker, is a manually-
operated device which is used to remove solder from a printed circuit board. There are
two types: the plunger style and bulb style. (An electrically-operated pump for
this purpose would usually be called a vacuum pump.)
8. CLEANING BRUSH
Cleaning brushes are used to carry out heavy duty cleaning tasks in the kitchen,
bathroom, they are also used to clean floors and ceilings. Not only that, they are
indispensable in cleaning hard-to-reach areas like bottles, sprouts, refrigerator coils and
much more.
9. SOLDERING LEAD
Soldering is the use of a conductive substance with a low melting point (solder) to
electrically connect components together. It is frequently used to join wires to leads of
components such as switches or to join components of all kinds to a printed circuit board.
10. SOLDERING STAND
A soldering iron stand keeps the iron away from flammable materials, and often
also comes with a cellulose sponge and flux pot for cleaning the tip.
APPLICATION AND REFLECTION
1. Upon knowing some tool that we discus in this module. Find other tools and their uses
that can be used in maintain and repair of electronically controlled domestic appliances.
2. Make a simple reflection about this lesson.
LESSON
LO2 : PARTS OF WASHING MACHINE AND ITS FUNCTIONS
CONTENTS:
1. Identify the different part of Washing Machine
2. Identify the uses of the different parts of a Washing Machine
MODULE
PARTS OF WASHING MACHINE AND ITS FUNCTIONS
1. WATER INLET CONTROL VALVE
Near the water inlet point of the washing machine there is water inlet control valve.
When you load the clothes in washing machine, this valve gets opened automatically and
it closes automatically depending on the total quantity of the water required. The water
control valve is actually the solenoid valve.
2. WATER PUMP
The water pump circulates water through the washing machine. It works in two
directions, re-circulating the water during wash cycle and draining the water during the
spin cycle.
3. TUB
There are two types of tubs in the washing washing machine: inner and outer. The clothes
are loaded in the inner tub, where the clothes are washed, rinsed and dried. The inner tub
has small holes for draining the water. The external tub covers the inner tub and supports
it during various cycles of clothes washing.
4. AGITATOR OR ROTATING DISC
The agitator is located inside the tub of the washing machine. It is the important part of
the washing machine that actually performs the cleaning operation of the clothes. During
the wash cycle the agitator rotates continuously and produces strong rotating currents
within the water due to which the clothes also rotate inside the tub. The rotation of the
clothes within water containing the detergent enables the removal of the dirt particles
from the fabric of the clothes. Thus the agitator produces most important function of
rubbing the clothes with each other as well as with water. In some washing machines,
instead of the long agitator, there is a disc that contains blades on its upper side. The
rotation of the disc and the blades produce strong currents within the water and the
rubbing of clothes that helps in removing the dirt from clothes.
5. MOTOR OF THE WASHING MACHINE
The motor is coupled to the agitator or the disc and produces rotation. These are
multispeed motors, whose speed can be changed as per the requirement. In the fully
automatic washing machine the speed of the motor i.e. the agitator changes automatically
as per the load on the washing machine.
6. TIMER
The timer helps setting the wash time for the clothes manually. In the automatic mode the
time is set automatically depending upon the number of clothes inside the washing
machine and the type of wash cycle being performed.
7. PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB)
The PCB comprises the various electronic components and circuits which are
programmed to perform in unique ways depending on the load conditions (the condition
and the amount of clothes loaded in the washing machine). They are sort of artificial
intelligence devices that sense the various external conditions and make the decisions
accordingly. These are also called fuzzy logic systems. Thus the PCB will calculate the
total weight of the clothes, and find out the quantity of water and detergent required, and
the total time required for washing the clothes. Then they will decide the time required
for washing and rinsing.
8. DRAIN PIPE
The drain pipe enables removing the dirty water from the washing that has been used for
the washing purpose.
APPLICATION AND RELFECTION
1. Draw and label the parts of a Washing Machine.
2. Determine the functions of the different parts of Washing Machine.
3. Make your own reflection about this lesson.
