The REY-HADI

Ranking System
For TITLE BOUT II
By Geoff Rey and Ahmed Hadi

Dedicated to the Title Bout Nation, with gratitude

to the Godfather of Boxing Sims Jim Trunzo,
and the Great Bill Salm

1
WELCOME
We have made the Rey-Hadi Ranking System as flexible as we know how. Feel
free to use your current point values for Fight Night wins, losses and draws. Our
suggested scale is provided on the spreadsheet’s “FN Scoring Grid” tab. However,
bear in mind that the spreadsheet will only update W-L-D statistics if win points
are typed in as positive numbers (ex. 1, 23, even 6.45), loss points are negative
(-1, -23, -6.45), and each draw is entered as 0 (zero, not the letter O).

Two nice bonus features:

 You can apply this system to a project in progress. For details, see Setting
up Rey-Hadi Rankings from a previous project on Page 7.

 Each fighter’s name is hyperlinked to BoxRec.com or another site with

information about him.

The system is easy to use. As the Cheat Sheet on Page 3 shows, ranking
fighters is a simple input-and-sort operation, easily memorized. Nevertheless, we
provide detailed definitions and instructions in case you’re interested in how the
system works.

CHEAT SHEET
Ranking

1. Open the Rey-Hadi Ranking System spreadsheet.

2. Click on the weight class you want to rank (HW, LHW, MW, etc.)

3. In Column E (Active? a-b-i-r-u) activate the fighters you wish to rank by

typing in the letter “a”.

4. After a bout, consult the “FN Scoring Grid” tab and assign Fight Night Scores
to each fighter. The grid fits on one page, in case you want to print it out.

5. For each fighter, enter those values in the first open column to the right
(FN1, FN2, etc., through FN100).

6. When you’re ready to generate rankings, click Ctrl+A to select all cells on
the sheet.

7. Sort the columns in the following order:

E – A to Z
F – Largest to Smallest
R– Largest to Smallest
Q– Largest to Smallest
N– Largest to Smallest
I– A to Z

8. Re-number Column I (Ranking) in ascending order, beginning at #001. For

example, a Top 20 would be #001 to #020.

4
Using data from a previous project

1. Open the Calculator tab.

2. Enter fighter's previous W-L-D record into columns A, B, C of his row.

3. Enter fighter’s KO Wins, TKO Wins, KO Losses, and TKO Losses into the
appropriate columns. This will give you the fighter’s Bonus Points.

4. Enter (do NOT copy/paste) the Bonus Points calculation (from Column I)
into the ADJ cell (Column D) of the row corresponding to each fighter.

5. Copy the data from each fighter’s Calculator columns A, B, C, D and paste
into the same four columns of the weight class tab you’re working on.

NOTE:
For further details, see Setting up Rey-Hadi Rankings from a previous project on
Page 7.

5
Tabs
Open the spreadsheet. You’ll see the following tabs:

Universe Idea – This tab describes Ahmed’s current boxing universe, included to
illustrate how he uses the ranking system and possibly give you a project idea.

E-Z Sort Info – Precise directions for sorting data in the Rey-Hadi Ranking System.

Calculator – Use this tab to input W-L-D, KO and TKO data from your current
project. Calculator will convert those numbers for use with The Rey-Hadi System.

NOTE:
The "Calculator" is a time-saving conversion feature only.
Its output is an APPROXIMATION based on the Rey-Hadi scale of Fight Night
scores. The Calculator cannot know the true value of your previous bouts.
For a full explanation, see Setting up Rey-Hadi Rankings from a previous project
on Page 7.

FN Scoring Grid – This is the Rey-Hadi points system, based loosely on what we
believe is the scale in the Title Bout II PC game.

All Boxers – A list of all the fighters currently in the TB II PC game.

Weight Classes (HW, LHW, MW, etc.) – These tabs are where you’ll input Fight
Night scores and create rankings.

BLANK COPY – Whenever you want to add a weight class, copy and rename this
tab.
To create a copy, right-click on the tab name  Select Move or Copy  Click on
the Create a copy box and select where you’d like to position the copy. A tab
named BLANK COPY (2) will be created.
To rename the copy, right-click select Rename, then type in an abbreviation for
the weight class. Examples: FW for Featherweight, or JWW for Junior
Welterweight.

Pound 4 Pound – A ranking of who is performing best, across weight classes.

6
Columns
Click on the HW tab.

You’ll see the following columns:

A, B, C, D: Previous W L D ADJ – Data from a project you wish to continue

while using the Rey-Hadi System.
For details, see Setting up Rey-Hadi Rankings from a previous project on Page 7.

E: Active?a-b-i-r-u – This column is where you’ll input letter codes for active,
newbie, inactive and retired fighters. Substitute the code for the word
“Unused.”

NOTE:
The ranking system works if you want to activate a Top 10, a Top 37, a Top 261 –
or just a Top 2.
Tip: Make a copy of the entire spreadsheet and do a practice run.

F: Ranking Hierarchy – Once you input data into the spreadsheet, the numerals
2, 1, 0 will determine the order in which rows will sort, based on the parameters
that YOU set.

Parameters are Minimum Wins (Column N) and Maximum Losses (Column O),
at the top of the sheet. They are set to 1, but you can customize when fighters are
eligible for ranking.

Examples:

 If you do not wish for newly activated fighters to be ranked among the
leaders until they’ve won a minimum of 15 bouts, change Minimum Wins to
15.
 If you want fighters to become ineligible for ranking after 3 defeats, change
Maximum Losses to3.

7
 If you want parameters of 10 wins and 5 losses, change the parameters to
10 and 5.
 In tournament play, if you want to re-sort the rankings after every bout,
return both Minimum Wins and Maximum Losses to 1.

G: The word YES appears (and remains) after a fighter reaches Minimum Wins.

H: The word NO appears (and remains) when a fighter reaches Maximum Losses.
NOTE:
The appearance of NO alerts you to change a fighter’s Active?a-b-i-r-u code to I
(for inactive). His data will sort below newbie but above retired and “unused”.

I: RANK – Shows the pre-sort rankings. After Fight Night, reset the rankings
according to instructions on the E-Z Sort tab.

J: CHAMPION
 If you have a reigning champion, type his name over the word VACANT.

 Click once lightly on a fighter’s name to be linked to his BoxRec page (login
first!) or, in the case of the Rocky characters, another page with
information about the fighter. This feature mimics the TB II PC game’s
BIOGRAPHY tab, but with different links.

K: OVL – Overall rating, at top of a fighter’s TB II card.

NOTE:
The Rey-Hadi Ranking System works regardless of whether the Overall column is
filled in. This spreadsheet only uses that rating to give you the ability to sort all the
fighters by this rating. For your convenience, we did arrange the listed fighters in
order of Overall rating (OVL). However, we are not giving away Jim Trunzo’s
proprietary information. You must own the fighter sets to sort by OVL.

L: DIV – Lets you know at a glance which tab you’re using.

8
M: BOUTS – Total Career Bouts.
N: W – Career Wins.
O: L – Career Losses.
P: D – Career Draws.

Q: Win% –Win Percentage.

Notes: Win% does not include draws in this system. Error messages will disappear
once you fill in Fight Night Scores.

R: FNAS – Fight Night Average Score– a “strength of schedule” metric.

Notes:

 FNAS does not include draws.

 Error messages will disappear once you fill in Fight Night Scores.

S: TOTAL POINTS – Career ranking points, a sum of columns T through DO.

T through DO: Fight Night Scores, which can be found on the FN Scoring Grid
tab.

Setting up Rey-Hadi Rankings from a previous project

Suppose you already have a spreadsheet with W-L-D data filled in. It would be a
major pain to line up that information with the names already included. Here’s
how you can make that process faster.

This spreadsheet contains a BLANK COPY tab with no names.

9
1. Make a copy of that tab and rename it.
2. From your spreadsheet, copy the names, W L D data, TKO, KO wins data
and TKO, KO losses data and paste them into the relevant columns of the
Calculator tab. Further directions are on the Calculator tab.

NOTE:
The Calculator cannot know the true value of bouts recorded before you use the
Rey-Hadi scale. Therefore the Calculator’s output is an approximation based on 5
points for a Win, -5 for a Loss, 0 points for a Draw, plus 1 point for a TKO, 2 points
for a Knockout.

For precise conversion, do not use the Calculator. Instead, use the FN Scoring Grid
to enter values for each bout, beginning at Column T (FN1).

Ranking the Boxers after Each Fight Night

Once your universe is set up, and you have attached codes for active, newbie,
inactive and retired fighters, you’re ready to rank.
After every bout, input each boxer’s FN Score into the first open FN column (T
through DO) of his row.

To generate rankings, follow the further instructions on the E-Z Sort Info tab. (It
can be printed out).

Creating an E-Z Sort button

The good news is that once you perform a manual sort on a worksheet, it will
remain the default until you change it. So you don't need an automatic sort to
enjoy the Rey-Hadi Ranking System. It's just nice to do with one click what
normally takes three.

10
That said, before you install a button, please read the following article to decide
whether you feel safe using a macro-enabled document:
https://us.norton.com/internetsecurity-malware-macro-viruses.html

Not frightened away? Then follow these steps – or send Geoff or Ahmed a private
message with your email, and we’ll send you a spreadsheet with the button and
instructions for preserving data you’ve already entered.

To be able to use macros...

1. In the File menu, go to Options
2. Select "Trust Center"
3. Select "Trust Center Settings..." (To the right)
4. Select "Macro Settings"
5. Select "Enable all macros" and click OK.

Add “Developer” to the Menu Bar...

6. Select "Customize Ribbon"
7. In the right-hand column, make sure the "Developer" box is checked and click
OK.

Add the E-Z Sort button...

On the tab you wish to insert the button...
8. Click the "Developer" menu.
9. Click the "Insert" icon (in the middle of the menu bar).
10. Within "Form Controls," select "Button (Form Control). The cursor will change
to a plus sign (+).
11. Click a blank cell wherever you wish to place the button. (If you can't decide,
the blank cell directly above the FNAS heading -- cell R2 -- is a fine location.)
12. The button might not fit perfectly within the cell. Don't worry, you can
reposition it later.
13. In the "Assign Macros" screen:
Do not change the "Macro name:"
Next to “Macros in:" select "This Workbook."
14. Click "Record..." box.
15. Click OK on the next screen to begin recording the sort.
16. Click the letter of first column you wish to sort. (In this case, E).

11
17. Click on the Data menu, and select the large Sort icon (the box containing four
letters).
18. When the sort window comes up, it might already be filled in with the sorting
columns and order you want.
If not, define the required six columns in sort succession (E, F, R, Q, N, I) and the
order (as detailed in the instructions).
19. Click OK.
20. Click Developer menu one last time.
21. At the left is the "Stop recording" button. Click it.
22. Your button is ready to sort.
23. You can now reposition, resize and rename the button.
24. Add a button to each weight class.

12
Creating Pound-for-Pound rankings
Once your universe is mature, you can use Rey-Hadi sorting to see who your best
performers are regardless of weight class.

The “Pound for Pound” tab is linked to the various weight classes. So all you have
to do is sort columns in the following order:
1. R – FNAS ( Largest to Smallest )
2. N – Wins ( Largest to Smallest )
3. Q – Win% ( Largest to Smallest )
4. M – Total Bouts ( Largest to Smallest )
5. E – a-b-i-r-u (A to Z)

Voila! Pound-for-Pound ratings in your universe.

Feel free to hide (do NOT delete!) columns you don’t want to see. The
copy/paste will continue to work.

And if you mess up, click Ctrl+Z (undo).

Adding weight classes

As new weight classes are released, you’ll need to update the “Pound for
Pound” tab.

After you create a tab for the new weight class:

1. Multiple-select cells A4 through DO303.
2. Click Ctrl+C (copy).
3. Click on the “Pound for Pound” tab.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the tab.
5. Click on the first open cell in the A column.
6. Right-click.
7. Roll you cursor to the arrow next to Paste Special.
8. Under Other Paste Options, select Paste Link (N).

Now the “Pound for Pound” tab is linked to the newly added weight class. You can
filter the list via Minimum Wins/Maximum Losses values.

The Rey-Hadi
Ranking philosophy
Geoff and Ahmed wanted a system that:

 Includes strength of schedule both for winners and losers. Hence, our FN
Score values.
 Avoids as much bout-to-bout volatility in the rankings as possible. That’s
why we sort in the following order:

1. Active?a-b-i-r-u–Places active fighters at top, followed by newbies,

inactive, retired, and unused.
2. Ranking Hierarchy– Sorts value 2 (ranked fighters) to top of column,
followed by 1 (other active fighters) and 0 (unused).
3. Fight Night Average Score–All other categories being equal, the fighter
who faces tougher competition deserves to be ranked higher. By using
the average instead of total points, we prevent fighters from clogging
the top rankings due to longevity only.
4. Win%– All other categories being equal, an undefeated fighter will
outrank those with losses on their records.
Note: The Minimum Win parameter and Eligibility sort codes combine to
prevent a 1-0-0 newbie from vaulting to the top of the rankings.
5. Total Wins– All other categories being equal, an undefeated fighter with
the most victories should outrank an unbeaten fighter with fewer wins.
This value rewards ring experience.
6. Previous Ranking– All other categories being equal, the higher-ranked
fighter will maintain his position.

Finally, the system assigns no value to a Draw, No Contest or No Decision. Unless

these outcomes lead to immediate rematches, then they only matter as historical
facts, but don’t affect the rankings.

We hope that Title Bout Nation finds the Rey-Hadi Ranking System helpful. We
welcome suggestions for other improvements and additions.

– Geoff and Ahmed
