Silent Reading Rubric & 11 Point Paragraph (Language Study Chart)

This rubric outlines three levels of performance for uninterrupted sustained silent reading. A Level 1 student is easily distracted, avoids reading, and is seldom on task. A Level 3 student can be distracted but returns to reading, and is on task most of the time. A Level 5 student is able to focus despite distractions and remains on task for the entire reading period. Grade 9 – Introduce the 11 point paragraph format

Grade 10 – Review the 11 point paragraph format and begin teaching the literary essay

Grade 11 – Review/Reinforce the 11 point paragraph format and teach the research essay

Grade 12 – Review/Reinforce the 11 point paragraph format and utilize them within the literary essay
Writing – The 11 Point Paragraph
If you follow the format you should be able to create a perfect paragraph.

Title: Remember the title should be specific and reflect the dominant impression of the paragraph – Be Creative!

1) Topic Sentence – Your topic sentence needs to state the dominate impression of the paragraph. Think of the sentence as an umbrella over the
entire paragraph – all points must fall underneath this ‘umbrella’.
2) Supporting Statement #1
3) Reference #1 – It can be a statement or a quotation that is a true support of the point.
4) Comment #1 – This comment answers ‘why’ or ‘how’ the detail supports the point.
5) Supporting Statement #2
6) Reference #2
7) Comment #2
8) Supporting Statement #3

10) Comment #3
11) Closing Sentence – To conclude the paragraph effectively, you are restating the dominant impression/main idea in a new and interesting way.

Revision Checklist

o Does the topic sentence state the purpose of the composition?


o Did I select three distinct points that support my topic?
o Did my reference(s) support the appropriate point?
o Did I prove my point/detail (answer the ‘why’ and ‘how’)?
o Did I connect my points with transition words or phrases?
o Did I restate the topic sentence in a new and interesting clincher?
o Did I eliminate all contractions and abbreviations?
o Did I use proper documentation when I used quotations (i.e., the page number in parenthesis after the quotation)?
o Did I vary my sentence structure so that they are interesting and not repetitive?
