This project involves the Grade 5 class making useful products out of recyclable materials over the course of 1 week. It will incorporate the subjects of science, ESP, and ICT. The students will design a product using local and recyclable solid or liquid materials. They will present their product design using a PowerPoint presentation. The major product will be a 5-foot Christmas lantern made of recyclable materials. It will be displayed in the public plaza of Stone Haven Residences to promote the proper disposal and reuse of waste materials in the community. The teacher will provide guiding questions to help the students in designing and making their recycled product.

Project Design Step 1: CONSIDERING YOUR CONTEXT

Which Students Will Be Involved? The whole Grade 5 class

When Will I Conduct the Project? This will be given to the class as the final
performance task.

How Simple or Complex will My Project Be? This is a simple project since the pupils will follow
the directions given by the teacher.

How Long Will My Project Be? 1 week duration

How Many Subject Areas Will Be Included? Following subjects:


1. Science (Main Subject)
2. ESP
3. ICT

Project Design Step 2: GENERATING AN IDEA FOR A PROJECT

The learners demonstrate understanding of - Use local, recyclable solid and/or liquid
properties of materials to determine whether they materials in making useful products
are useful or harmful

Generating Your Own Idea About the Project

The making of useful materials ouf of recyclable materials is one way to promote
implementation of the Waste Management Program not only in the school but also to the
concerned community. This can also bring to another purposeful program in the community
which is the Plastic Free Environment . Since Proper segregation of materials has been
observed by the community(Stone Haven Reisdences), another step to think as to what
strategy can the community will be using in disposing properly the segregated waste materials.
This inspires the project proponents (Grade 5 class) to designed project that can benefit the
concerned community using acquired skills in school which is 5R’S Strategy
(reduce,reuse,recycle,repair, restore). The main focus of this activity is Recycling. The project
will be benefited by the concerned community out of recyclable materials. The main materials
will be taken from the segregated waste materials from the MRF (Materials Recovery Facilities)
of the community.
(Note: Before the making and designing of project, let the pupils plan out as to how they are
going to make and design the project. The group will present their plan to the class through a
powerpoint presentation. Suggestions will be raised before the proposed designed will be
made.)
