Worksheet 2
Applying your Learning
Interracial Communication
- I had an interaction with a Australian man who was at my friend's house as they are from the same
religion. They visited the Philippines together with his other companions for worshiping purposes. He
asks some questions to me and my friends and did a little chitchat. He has a sense of humor so we
somehow get along.
Inter-ethnic Communication
- Some Muslim people reside at cities to earn for a living. When I visited Tacloban on their fiesta, me and
my friend visited some shops to buy souvenirs and that invludes a shop where Muslims sell their
products. We somehow struggled talking to the owner of the shop since we had a different dialect but
they adjusted and talk to us through Tagalog language and we manage to buy the souvenirs me and my
friend wanted.
International Communication
- I had an online interaction with a Japanese woman who can amazingly speaks english well and I told
her that I admire their culture and how their government works and she responded that she also
admires the Philippine culture. She even said that she hopes she could meet me in the future.
Intra-cultural Communication
- I joined a group chat in Messenger where Filipino fans of Treasure – a Kpop rookie boy group gathered
together for streaming and voting updates. They are easy to get along with even though we haven't
meet in person yet. Since we are all from the Philippines, it is easy to interact with them and we can
understand each other well.
Evaluating your Learning
1. Korean Culture
- When talking to them, using honorifics is a must to show respect and formality. When meeting new
people, bow is a sign of gratitude and respect. To blur the boundary when they interact with older
friends they met socially, calling them "hyung", "unnie", "oppa" or "noona" is the key. By using these
terms, you show your willingness to be informal as if they were your own brothers or sisters.
2. Japanese Culture
- A handshake is appropriate upon meeting. The Japanese handshake is limp and with little or no eye
contact. Nodding is very important. When listening to Japanese speak, especially in English, you should
nod to show that you are listening and understanding the speaker. A bow is also a highly regarded
greeting to show respect and is appreciated by the Japanese. Using "San", "Kun", and "Chan" to be
added to the end of names and occupation titles is a sign of respect.
3. Chinese Culture
- Shake hands upon meeting. Chinese may nod or bow instead of shaking hands, although shaking hands
has become increasingly common. When introduced to a Chinese group, they may greet you with
applause, applaud back. Senior persons begin greetings. Greet the eldest, most senior person before
others. Use family names and appropriate titles until specifically invited by your Chinese host or
colleagues to use their given names.
4. Thai Culture
- When being introduced or greeting someone, men say Sawatdee-krap and women say Sawatdee-kah.
Thais greet each other with a "wai". Foreigners are not expected to return the wai. If a wai is not offered
to you, shake hands with men and smile and nod to women. A wai can mean "Hello", "Thank you", "I'm
sorry", or "Goodbye". Thais often addressed foreigners by their given names because it is easier for
them; it does not imply familiarity. Thai given names are preceded by Khun (Mr. Mrs. or Miss), unless
they carry a higher degree, such as doctor. Khun is used for men and women, married or single. If you
don't know a person's name, address them as Khun.
5. American Culture
- American greetings are generally quite informal. This is not intended to show lack of respect, but
rather a manifestation of the American belief that everyone is equal. Americans smile a great deal, even
at strangers. They like to have their smiles returned. Some Americans are known as "back slappers" —
they give others a light slap on the back to show friendship. Never begin eating until everyone is served
and your hosts have begun. Offer food or drink to others before helping yourself. Serve all women at the
table first. If offered a second helping of food, feel free to take what you like. Americans like people to
eat a lot.
Lesson 2
Warming Up
1. Globalization
Globalization promotes and increases interactions between different regions and populations around
the globe and communicating with other cultures characterizes today's business that's why
communication in globalization is paramount because individuals from different countries, ethnicities,
languages, cultural attitudes and other variations must undestand one another and express themselves
to another effectively to work together.
Business opportunities
- Communication is important in order for a business to prosper and it also plays a vital role in starting a
business. Business opportunities takes place globally so in order to attract investors, you need to be able
to communicate to them in a proper and understandable manner so they can understand and will be
interested in what you are offering and effective communication can also help to foster a good working
relationship which can in turn improve morale and efficiency.
Job opportunities
- Most of job offers look for a person who has great communication skills. It shows qood quality of the
person looking for a job and it creates higher chance and opportunity in getting accepted. Employers
who also spend time and energy to create open communication lines will quickly create trust among
applicants who are going to be there employees in the future, resulting in productivity, performance and
overall morale.
Sharing of views and ideas
- Communication is absolutely inevitable in sharing of views and ideas as it is the exchanging of thoughts
and opinions to one another. It is the conveying of important information and providing feedback –
positive and constructive.
Understanding diverse market
- Communication is inevitable in undertanding diverse market as it is the core of it. Diversity marketing
involves acknowledging that marketing and advertising must offer alternative ways of communicating to
diverse groups. With that knowledge, diversity markets aim to develop a mix of different communication
methods in order to reach people in each of the diverse groups present in the market.
Applying our Learning
Experiences and Explanation
1. More acceptance and understanding towards gender identities
- There are different gender identities especially the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex,
asexual+ (LGBTQIA+) nowadays and many of them are coming out confidently and are proud of
themselves. As our technologies evolve, many people become more aware and accepting to the
LGBTQIA+ community. This is because people nowadays have more access to different medium and
channels where they get to hear and learn the stories of LGBTQIA+ and this is where some of them start
to accept and understand the different sexual orientation. That includes me because before, honestly I
do not understand why people have to change their gender and express themselves incongruent to their
biological gender but now I get to see that they don't change their gender intentionally because it
naturally comes out on them and we should respect that because it is their own life and own choice and
it's already out of our concerns and what we only have to do is to accept and respect them for what and
who they are because they are human too and that's what they deserve.
2. Establish relationship with other culture
- Through the advancement of technologies, I am able to establish relationships from other culture
which enables us to understand each other. We compare and contrast our similarities and differences
and I believe that this has a good impact to our society as it can create more and equal insights and
knowledge about other culture.
3. Increase confidence to one's self
- Being able to communicate with anyone increases my confidence in a way that it enables me to talk
with other people even if I don't know personally know them. Communication builds a common ground
that even if we are a complete stranger to each other, we can communicate comfortably. This helps me
find connections that wi probably help me in the future like perhaps finding a job or simply seeking help
for my studies and any other concerns.
4. Some people become insensitive
- Since we can communicate in various ways, some people take that opportunity to ruin other's image
that creates a negative impact to one's mental well-being. I've read and see a lot of people online who
have experienced cyberbullying that have gone through anxiety and depression. Some people become
insensitive and it doesn't matter to them even if they're already hurting other people's feelings as long
as they can express their opinions or insights and as long as what they're doing satisfies them and the
misfortune of other people makes them happy. This has a huge effect to our society as one opinion or
action can change and ruin someone's life and even with how they think, act, and speak.
5. Increases knowledge
- Communication is the sharing of ideas and activity of interactively conveying and constructing of
insights, assessments, experiences, or skills through verbal and non-verbal means that helps in
increasing one's knowledge. As there are various topics being discussed in every communication
situation, different useful informations are being produced that will probably be of help for us in the
near future.

2. No. I don't have a prior knowledge about it.
3. Yes. It would be of great help if I get to know the competencies as I would know what to familiarize
and practice to become a competent global communicator.
4. I think self-awareness is the best of all the stated competencies because I believe that everything
starts within ourselves and we should be responsible with our actions so being aware and observing our
own communication behavior and ensuring that they are appropriate to the situation is very important.
5.
•Knowing when to start of conversation
- Starting a conversation is the first step towards a responsive communication situation and sometimes
it is awkward to initiate a talk first so I think competent global communicator should know when to start
talking to make the atmosphere more comfortable for both speakers.
Applying your Learning
1. Learn how to be flexible enough to come up with an alternative plan to the unexpected happenings
that comes on our way. Learn how to remain calm and still be able to communicate even if there are
uncertainties.
2. Think before you say something. Sometimes we say unnecessary things that affects our way of
communication and in order for it to be avoided, we should think thoroughly and organize the things we
have to say or if it is an unplanned communication, we should stick to the topic being discussed so that it
won't be confusing and it won't get messed up.
3. We should always be aware and considerate to the feelings of the people we're communicating with
and be mindful enough to the things we will say in order not to offend other people. We should also
learn how to accept and respect different perspectives and beliefs.
4. As a globally competitive communicator, the ways to develop and improve my adaptability skills is to
be aware of the changes in my environment, to develop a growth mindset, to set goals for myself, to ask
for feedback and learn to acknowledge and accept change.
5. Being polite to the people you're communicating with is very important as it is the key to a smooth
communication and I could develop it by listening and being understanding, by avoiding usage of
negative words and by using little words to soften my statements.
6. In order to avoid negative questions, I should always stay positive and enthusiastic when I'm
communicating with other people to establish a good atmosphere and harmonious relationship with the
people I'm talking to.
7.
Listening to what is being said rather than offering advice or guidance.

Evaluating your Learning
1. Verbal communication or speaking is a social activity, it is universally learned, it is usually unplanned,
it makes use of gestures and facial expressions and it creates an on-the-spot output. An example of
verbal communication is extemporaneous speaking. While written communication is a private activity,
writing need to be taught, it is generally planned, it uses punctuation marks, it creates a permanent
output, and it is organize and durable. An example of written communication is writing a journal about
your vacation or any memorable personal experiences. There are principles that one need to consider in
verbal and written communication and it is being clear with your purpose, being concise, being concrete,
and being corret which means that you need to observe appropriate gestures and movements, and
grammatical correctness in speaking and writing, respectively.
2.
•Local/Setting: Where you are or where the text is located can influence register. For example, written
communication between gaming partners in an online gaming setting will require a different register to
a politician speaking in parliament.
•Participants (their relationship, relative status, their roles in the discourse etc.), including audience: The
host of a radio or TV show may be more formal than a guest or they might match the register of their
guest to establish rapport. For example, if you are writing for or speaking to young children, your
register will differ if you then talk to teenagers vs. adults with a tertiary education even if the topic is the
same.
•Text type: A casual conversation will have a different register than a eulogy of a public figure. Some
texts require a specific register like Legalese which has its own specific syntactic and lexical features.
•Social purpose: A person or text seeking to be authoritative, for example, laying down rules of conducts
will be quite formal while someone seeking to amuse an audience or create rapport with others will be
more casual.
•Domain/Field: Sometimes subject matter (and cultural beliefs and attitudes to it) influences register.
Dirty jokes are informal, but talking about sensitive topics like death of loved ones may require more
formal language choices.
3. Modern technology make our communication easier. It helps us communicate with people from
distant places using different channels. It also enables us to be flexible in writing but somehow creates a
negative effect since when we communicate with someone online, we tend to use slang words or
shortened words that confuses the person we're sending the message to and sometimes we carry it as a
habit in writing formal paper and speaking in formal way that ruins the ethical principles of written and
spoken communication.

1. "Your food taste great!" Tita Beth exclaimed. My tita's and some of my cousins are also present. "Hey,

4. "Sex education should be implemented in high schools, not to encourage them to do it but to give
them awareness about it." Beatrice stated her argument. "Our eyes need to be open with this topic
because unsafe sex is increasingly happening today." She added. Jhoana rebutted to her argument, "I
disagree with your statement. Sex education should be taught in homes by their parents because in the
first place, it is their responsibility. It is their duty to educate them because they have their own
experience and knowledge about it." Jhoana said. "I strongly oppose your statement because if parents
should be educating them then why is it that there are still many young teens who live under the roof of
their parents getting pregnant without a father? You see, education doesn't stop at home. Sex education
can be taught in a proper manner. Whe should not close our eyes to this. Because our emotional and
sexual state matters." Beatrice pointed out.

Based on the picture given, the audience who attended the Oscars 2017 Awards Night were seeing the
person or individual who won the Oscars Award and probably that person is up front and giving his/her
speech of thanks and appreciation for choosing him/her and the audience seem pleased to what they've
heard.
In this picture, the audience seem shocked, probably not expecting an individual on stage and hearing
his/her speech, they felt bothered or had a questioning feeling about him/her.
Applying and Evaluating your Understanding
Sex Education
1. Might get the audience uncomfortable.
2. Might offend their beliefs.
3. Adults might find it disrespectful.
4. People might throw bad questions at me afterwards.
5. A few people might only attend.
6. They might oppose my views.
7. My voice might ecoed.

audience.
The event will be conducted at midday around 10 am so that the audience can prepare themselves. The
topic will be about sex education. An hour will be enough to discuss the important matters about the
topic so that the audience will not feel bored listening or bombarded with information and also for the
speaker not to be tired speaking. It will be held in a place with enough space where the audience can
move around. The topic might be a taboo to some people but I need to make sure that they will
understand what I want to imply and make them realize the importance of my topic. The speakers
should be limited only on the sides so that they would be able to hear me clearly and no technical
malfunction with the microphone will take place. Communicate with gentleness, respect, and
understanding but make sure to state correctly and factually the matter about the topic.

1. The title of the movie is Forever My Girl. The genre of the movie is romance.
2. Forever My Girl explores forgiveness theme.
3. Liam Page is an ambitious man whose passion is singing that he even choses to leave his bride on their
wedding day in exchange of fame and fortune. That trait of him make an impact to the whole story of
the movie as when he came back, he found out that his bride give birth to his daughter which he has
completely no idea about because he never communicate with anyone while he's away and eventually
ask for a second chance as he never got over Josie, his bride and asks for forgiveness and he correct his
mistake and fix it and make everything that he left behind go back to its original places and they lived
happily with their daughter, Billy.
4. Liam Page is a country music superstar who left his bride, Josie Mollee Swan, at the altar choosing

countryside vibe that adds life to the story which combined with all the emotions circulating in the
movie.
6. Liam Page leave his bride without knowing that she is carrying his own child. Josie never take abortion
as a choice when she got to know that she's pregnant and her child will grow without a father. Billy's
growth as a young girl with full of charms is because of how beautiful Josie raised her, alone.
7. Forever My Girl is a sweet romantic movie. The story has a lot of lessons to tell. It was really a roller-
coaster journey for the main characters of the movie. It has a lot of heartaches, challenges, and
unpredictable scenes. It is story of fortune, success, love for the family and giving a second chance to a
person who commit a mistake in the past but was able to correct and fix it. The movie offers many
positive messages particularly about redemption, humility, and unconditional love.
