 Module 2 was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
how to interpret the meaning of visual media. This first part of Module 2
aims to give you a quick learning on the different types as well as elements of
visual media. Knowing these preliminary lessons or topics is your first step to
successfully show understanding on interpreting the meaning of visual media.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. know the type of the different visual media from the teacher’s presentation;
2. identify the type of the given visual media;
3. know the elements of the different visual media from the teacher’s
presentation; and
4. identify the element of the given visual medium.

Types of Visual Media

Since this module will be talking about visual media, it is then important to
unlock the meaning of visual media.

Visual media (singular medium) are the things seen or heard from
television, movies, photography, painting, advertisement and so on.

 The following is a brief discussion of the different types of visual media.

To continue learning visual media, here is a lesson on their elements.

Again, carefully read the following discussion.

Visual media can be used to enhance learning, critical thinking and

analysis. It is therefore concluded that it is necessary to know the basic elements
of visual media.
To help you convey meanings of what you see, take note of the important
facts or definitions about the elements of visual media.

1. Lines are used in images to indicate movement and direction. It can be

straight or curved, and vertical or horizontal, etc.

2. Symbols include icons. It is used as short cuts to represent ideas or concepts.

3. Colors have hue, brightness, and saturation as proper basic properties. It can
be used to represent feelings and mood.

 4. Gaze is how one connects with look or eye contact. It is used to consider the
impact on the nature of the interaction between the subject and the viewer.
5. Framing is the way in which elements in a still or moving image are arranged
to create a specific interpretation of the whole. Strong framing creates a sense
of closure around elements.
6. Social Distance tells how close or far away is the subject from the viewer. It
is measured on a continuum from extremely close, to extremely remote.
