"The Day After Tomorrow: Climate Crisis Summary"

The document summarizes the plot of the film "The Day After Tomorrow". It describes how paleoclimatologist Jack Hall predicts the onset of a new ice age due to climate change. Despite warnings, global leaders fail to act. Massive storms then form across the northern hemisphere, plunging the world into an early ice age within a week. Jack's son is trapped in New York City as the storms hit. Jack travels to find his son, battling extreme weather. They take shelter with a group in the New York Public Library as the city freezes over. President Becker orders rescue efforts to find survivors across the frozen north.

“The Day After Tomorrow”

SUMMARY:

Jack Hall is a paleoclimatologist who went to Antarctica with two teammates, Frank and Jason. They drill
for ice core samples for the NOAA when the ice shelf breaks off from the rest of the continent, and Jack
almost falls to his death. Jack presents his findings on global warming at a United Nations conference.
But diplomats and the Vice President of the United States are unconvinced by Jack's theory.

However, Jack's concerns appeals with Professor Terry Rapson of the Hedland Climate Research Centre
in Scotland. Jack predict that the first ice age would not happen until a hundred or a thousand years, but
he, Frank, Jason, and NASA's meteorologist Janet build a forecast model with his, Rapson's, and Tokada's
data.

All over the world, violent weather causes mass destruction, including a snowstorm in New
Delhi, a large hailstorm in Tokyo, Japan, and a large outbreak of tornadoes in Los Angeles. The
situation worsens when three massive hurricane-like blizzard superstorms begin to form over
the northern hemisphere. The eye of the storm makes everything freeze when in contact to it
due to its very cold-air, which seems that the predicted ice age will occur in seven to ten days.

Meanwhile, Jack's son, Sam, is in New York City for an academic competition with his friends Brian and
Laura. And they also made friend with a student named J.D. During the competition, birds suddenly
cover the sky. Then the weather becomes massively violent with intense winds and flooding rains. Sam
calls his father, making a promise to be on the next train home. Unfortunately, the storm worsens,
forcing subways and Grand Central Terminal to close. As the storm worsens in Manhattan, a tidal wave
of overwhelming size the island, causing major flooding. Sam and his friends seek refuge in the New York
Public Library.

The survivors in the northern United States are forced to stay inside due to the storm. Jack sets off for
Manhattan to find his son, accompanied by Frank and Jason. During the journey, Frank falls through the
glass roof of a snowbound shopping mall. Jason and Jack try to pull Frank up but Frank sacrifice himself
by cutting the ropes because it might also harm his friends if he don’t. In another incident, President
Blake's motorcade is fatally caught in the superstorm, meaning that Raymond Becker is sworn in as the
new President.

In the library, Sam warns everyone to stay indoors, but few listen. The small group that remains burns
books to stay alive and breaks the vending machine for food. Laura has a blood poisoning, so Sam, Brian,
and J.D. must search for penicillin in a Russian cargo ship, and are attacked by escaped wolves from the
New York Zoo. The eye of the superstorm begins to pass over the city which makes the entire New York
City skyline begins to freeze. The three return to the library with medicine, food, and supplies, making it
to safety.

During the deep freeze, Jack and Jason take shelter in an abandoned restaurant. They continue their
journey after the storm and finally arriving in New York City. They find the library buried in snow, but
find Sam's group. President Becker orders search and rescue teams to look for other survivors. In the
end, two astronauts looking down at Earth from the International Space Station, showing most of the
northern hemisphere covered in ice, and a major reduction in pollution.

Lesson Learned:

I learned in the movie that we should already make a step towards change. We should start
caring more to our Mother Earth since that it is the only place we can live at. In our time, we
already discover many things that we believe that can change and make life easier. But have
you ever thought that these things may also bring bad effects like what we are experiencing
now? It is not too late yet. We should act now before something really bad happen. Remember
that when we lose Earth, we can not have another one.
