CASE HISTORY
WAY SEKAMPUNG DAM

2018
Lampung, Indonesia
Erosion Control System

Problem Description
A cut slope at Way Sekampung Dam Project (Pringsewu
- Lampung) needed to be protected from erosion
potential. The cut slope which was mainly composed by
fine grained soil required a protection from erosion
created by rain and surface water flow. The selection of
the right solution was necessary in order to prevent
failure by presence of water. Erosion Control System by
Maccaferri was selected considering its ability to drain
water and allow the growth of vegetation. Conditions of existing soil

Solution Description
An Erosion Control System made of a combination
between HDPE geomat and double-twisted wire mesh
panel with longitudinal high tensile strength steel
cables called Macmat® HS was installed on the cut
slope. An array of mulching contained of seeds was
then applied onto the Macmat® HS to bring vegetation.
The vegetation shall bring the nature back as rehabili-
tation. For some areas, Soil Nailing was added as addi-
tional reinforcement for local stability. Overview of installed MacMat® HS

Available in rolls, Macmat® HS has easy installation

procedure with support of T-shape deformed bar to
hold the mesh onto the cut slope.
Maccaferri Erosion Control System shall grant some
advantages such as:
• Easy and Quick Installation ;
• Allows drainage on the surface of the slope ;
• Allows vegetation as rehabilitation ;
• Capable for combination with Soil Nailing ;
• Suitable for steep slopes. Application of mulching MacMat® HS

Wall Structure. Using Maccaferri engineered material
called Terramesh System, ensures durability and
safety throughout the structure. Working together
with Geogrid material as Primary Reinforcement,
Hybrid System then created with integrated
combination of reinforcement. Terramesh System
therefore working as Secondary Reinforcement or
Facia. Compaction and preparation of structural fill
soil is carried out with traditional equipment in
accordance with all relevant local specifications.
Installation of subdrain with Maccaferri Drainage
Composite called Macdrain® within the structure
completes the system network.

Maccaferri geogrids are planar structure consisting

of a monoaxial array of composite geosynthetic
strips. Each single longitudinal strip has a core of
high tenacity polyester yarns tendons encased in a
polyethylene sheath; the single strips are connected
by non-resisting cross laid polyethylene strip that
gives a grid-like shape to the composite. Maccaferri
can provide geogrid until 1,350 kN/m of Tensile
Strength.

Maccaferri produces all of the materials under strict

quality standards and following international stan-
dards suchs as International Organization for Stan-
dardization (ISO), European Standard (EN), and
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Comparing the protection of banks from wave action using
linings of Reno mattress and linings of rip rap, we were
able to see that for a wave height of 0.75 m on a bank slope
of 1:1.5, a Reno mattress of 0.15 m in depth will be stable,
whereas a depth of 0.60 to 0.70 m of rip rap would be
required. For a wave height of 1.25 m on a slope of 1:1.5
mm a Reno mattress of 0.25 m in depth will be stable,
while the depth of rip rap needed is 0.95 to 1.15 m.

is available as an alternative solution with bene-
ficial advantages. Macline® GCL W by Maccaferri
consists of Sodium Bentonite encapsulated
between non-woven geosynthetic and woven
geosynthetic. With nominal thickness from
5.5mm – 6.5mm, Macline® GCL W can have very
low permeability until 1x10-11 m/sec under
100 kPa of pressure. Using a single layer, a
permeation time of 15-20 years can be reached
which is equivalent as 500mm thick of clay soil
with permeability of 1x10-9 m/sec. Compared
to other waterproofing solutions, GCL is able to
adapt with variative contour thanks to its flexi-
bility and easier to be installed with overlapping
connection without using any particular equip-
ment.
