Imagine racing across almost one thousand miles of Alaskan terrain with nothing to protect
you against the freezing temperatures other than your clothes and your determination? For
some, this might sound like torture. For many other people, it is an adventure they train for all
year round.

For the past 40 years, dozens of dedicated men and women have participated in the Iditarod, a
contest that has been nicknamed the last great race on Earth. Gathering in Anchorage, Alaska,
the racers check their sleds, dog teams, and gear before starting. This race can take up to two
weeks or more to complete, and, as they travel, the competitors will stop and check in at 25
small towns along the route.

The trip is difficult and exhausting, but racers are equipped with everything from cell phones
to Global Positioning Devices. Most of the competitors are sponsored by businesses and blog
the journey as they cover mile after mile.

The sled drivers are in good company: their team of sled dogs. Most of the dogs are either
Siberian Huskies or Alaskan Malamutes, chosen for their strength, endurance, and speed. The
dogs are able to cover up to 100 miles a day and each one has its unique position on the team.
Together, the dogs and their mushers race over snow and ice, in wind and through blizzards
to reach that all-important finish line.

1. What is the most likely meaning of the word "musher"?

a. Lead dog
b. Sled driver
c. Winning racer
d. Company sponsor

2. What is the most likely reason that people participate in the Iditarod?
a. For the huge prize money
b. To travel throughout Alaska
c. For the adventurous experience
d. To spend a great deal of time outside

3. Why do competitors most likely stop in at small towns along the route?
a. They want to rest for a few days.
b. They change both their sleds and dog teams.
c. They need time to consult the map and verify directions.
d. They record their position and show that they are still on route

Have you ever heard someone say that it was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop? It may be
hard to imagine anyplace that is that quiet since the world is a very noisy place! Some experts
worry that the majority of people suffer from noise pollution due to a definite lack of silence.

No matter where you go, there is always some kind of noise, even if it is only traffic moving
in the distance, or clocks ticking, people talking and walking, dogs barking, or music playing.
There is one place you can go where the only sounds you will be able to perceive are the
beating of your heart and the sound of your breathing. Such a place may seem peaceful, but it
is actually unpleasant for almost anyone who stops by to visit.

What is the world's quietest place? It is a room called the anechoic chamber and it is located
in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The floor, ceiling, and walls are lined with fiberglass wedges that
are built to absorb sound. A number of companies use this room for testing the sound quality
of their products. However, visitors are also allowed to go in the room and just sit in the dark
and listen to absolutely nothing. Most people want out fairly quickly, and so far, no one has
lasted more than 45 minutes before wanting back out into a noise-filled world.

d. A truly silent place is extremely difficult to find in today's world.

3. What does the term anechoic most likely mean?
a. Sound quality testing

A handshake is not an uncommon gesture in today's culture. Friends shake hands

upon meeting each other. Strangers shake hands when they are introduced. Businessmen
shake hands before and after meetings. However, a very unusual handshake occurred in
February 2012. Dan Burbank, the station commander on the International Space Station (ISS)
reached out to grasp the metallic hand of Robonaut 2. After shaking the commander's hand,
R2 faced the ISS camera and waved hello to the rest of the world. R2 is the world's first
human-like robot and the latest member to call the ISS home.

The robot cost more than two million dollars to build. Its head contains four cameras.
Its chest holds almost 40 computer processors. Made out of aluminum and steel, R2 wears a
backpack full of batteries. It is certainly not a surprise that this robot weighs hundreds of
pounds.

R2 was first tested under the effects of earth's gravity. The next question was how
would it perform in outer space? It did great!

Currently, R2 has been trained to do simple cleaning tasks, like wiping rails, and
cleaning filters. Eventually, the robot will be used for much more complicated tasks since it
will not require the same suits and other equipment that regular astronauts do. One day, R2
may be making space walks and discovering amazing things to share with the rest of the
world.

SAN ROQUE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Gov. A. Pascual cor., Leongson Sts. San Roque, Navotas City

1. Based on this passage, why were the experts worried about how R2 would perform in
outer space?
a. They did not think that the robot's head cameras would provide clear images.
b. There was concern that the batteries in the backpack would not last long enough.
c. On the ISS, the robot was not functioning under the power of the earth's gravity.
d. Robots were known for having problems with space walks in outer space.

2. Which statement would make the best conclusion for this passage?
a. R2 just might go where no man- or robot-has ever gone before.
b. Next, R2 will learn how to climb without having to use its hands.
c. The cameras in R2's head can send images back to NASA for observation.
d. Since there is no gravity on the space station, R2 had to be reprogrammed.

3. Based on this passage, which of the following statements is most likely true?
a. The ISS staff resents having a robot on board with them.
b. R2 has been designed with cutting edge technology.
c. The Discovery shuttle will not be making very many more voyages.
d. 0The robot will not be ready to be helpful to the ISS for many years yet.

"Mama, is it time to go?"

I hadn't planned to cry, but the tears came suddenly, and I wiped them away with the back of
my hand. I didn't want my older sister to see me crying.
"It's almost time, Ruri," my mother said gently. Her face was filled with a kind of sadness I
had never seen before.

I looked around at my empty room. The clothes that Mama always told me to hang up in the
closet, the junk piled on my dresser, the old rag doll I could never bear to part with--they
were all gone. There was nothing left in the rest of the house. The rugs and furniture were
gone, the pictures and drapes were down, and the closets and cupboards were empty. The
house was like a gift box after the nice thing inside was gone; just a lot of nothingness.

from "The Bracelet" by Yoshiko Uchida

a. Ruri is getting married and leaving her childhood home.
b. Ruri is going off to college.
