Pre-Delivery Inspection

W1000076

The importance of the Pre-Delivery Service Manual is to assure the customer and Volvo
Trucks North America, Inc. that the vehicle is inspected before delivery to the customer.

This is not a step-by-step procedures manual. When necessary, other manuals will
be noted with the required references.

Where the phrase “Check for proper operation” is used, it is assumed that an
experienced technician with a working knowledge of the vehicle and its basic operation,
is performing the check/inspection.

Technicians not familiar with basic vehicle operation should receive adequate training
before a vehicle is inspected. They should make sure they posses the judgement to
pass an item as being in good condition and their decision is made with certainty.
When using the “Pre-Delivery Inspection Form” page 27, write down any defects found
while performing the inspection, under NOTES, at the back of the form.

Fluid Levels and Lubrication

18. Engine
Note: Check fluid levels with the vehicle on level ground.
If the fluid level is low, add as necessary. If oil has to be
added, use only the same type of oil that is already in the
component. Also check for any leaks and note on the
back of the “Pre-Delivery Inspection Form” page 27.

Check the engine oil level. The acceptable level is

between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. If the
oil level is above the top mark, oil should be removed from
the oil sump. Check for visible oil leaks.

19. Transmission/Oil Cooler

Check the oil level in the transmission by removing the
fill/level plug in the side of the transmission housing or
check with the dipstick. The oil should be level with
the bottom of the fill/level plug hole or according to the
marking on the dipstick. Check for visible oil leaks.

For Allison automatic transmission, refer to the Allison

Operator’s Manual for proper fluid level checking
procedures.

Note: Vehicles equipped with coolers: Ensure all lines

are secure and show no signs of leaks.

20. Rear Axle(s)

Check the oil in the differential by removing the fill/level
plug in the housing. The oil should be level with the
bottom of the fill/level plug hole. Check for visible oil leaks.

21. Steering System

Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir with
the engine off. The level should be at the full mark on the
dipstick. Check for visible leaks.
Note: Do not overfill the power steering reservoir or fill
with the engine running. For proper fluid type, refer to
decal affixed to the power steering reservoir.

On vehicles equipped with steering helper cylinder or

gear on the right side of the frame, check the components
for visible leaks.
Note: Some steering shaft U-joints are equipped with
grease fittings.
1: Lubricate if equipped with optional grease fittings.
W6001526

22. Cooling System

Check to see that the coolant/anti-freeze in the radiator is
at the proper level. Pressure test the system and check
for leaks. For information, refer to service information in
Group 26.

23. Clutch Reservoir

Check fluid level in the clutch fluid reservoir. Add if
necessary.

Use only DOT 4 brake fluid in the clutch release system.

the fifth wheel plate by using the grease fitting under the
fifth wheel top plate or by direct application to the top of
the plate. The fifth wheel can be greased with the trailer
connected, by using the grease fittings under the top
plate.
Grease the support brackets trunnions through the

Test Drive
25. Before Test Drive
Note: Make notes of any observations made before,
during, and after the test drive on the “Pre-Delivery
Inspection Form” page 27.

Important: During test drive, make sure the vehicle

achieves operating temperature.

Before the test drive, check the following for proper

operation (refer to the Operator’s Manual):

• Dash switches, controls, gauges and indicator lights

• Air pressure build up

• Holding ability of service and parking brakes

• Windshield wipers and washers

Start the engine and check for rapid build-up of air

pressure. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal to reduce
air pressure in the tanks to about 85 psi to prepare for
checking air recovery. While running the engine at max
rpm (park brakes applied and transmission in neutral)
listen for the air dryer to purge. The dryer should purge
when the system pressure reaches cut-out pressure,
approximately 130 psi. This should occur in approximately
30 seconds.

Run engine to build up air pressure to full system

pressure. Turn engine off, walk around the vehicle and try
to find any audible leaks. Actuate auxiliary systems like
the differential locks, 5th wheel slide locks, etc. Check for
air leaks with these actuated.
Check park and service brakes. Volvo Trucks North
America, Inc. recommends this check should be an
operational inspection. This requires two people.

With the park brakes released, one person should press

and hold the brake pedal to actuate the service brakes.
The second person should walk around and watch each
brake chamber to make sure that each chamber is moving
the slack adjuster to actuate the brakes. The second
person should also listen for any audible leaks in the
brake tubes and hoses.
Last check: A person in the cab should apply the park
brakes and a person outside should verify the spring
brakes have actuated the brakes by moving the slack
adjusters. If available, they should also connect to a
trailer or use a plugged dummy glad hand to block the
Red Trailer Hose (Emergency line) this allows the red
park button to be pushed in and the person can verify
the Tractor Protection valve is opening and delivering
control air through the Blue Hose when the brake pedal is
pressed.

Group 17 Service Procedures Pre-Delivery Inspection

26. During Test Drive

During the test drive, check the following for proper
performance and listen for any unusual noise or vibration:

Check engine controls and performance while moving

through the gears. The accelerator should move smoothly
and without any hesitation in engine response. The
engine should accelerate smoothly and without hesitation,
misses or surges.

Check for any ABS warning lights or fault codes. The

vehicle must be going at least 7 mph to correctly perform
this check.

Locate a steep hill (with a trailer connected), pull off to the

side of the road and apply the park brakes. The vehicle
should not roll away at all.

Check the steering wheel and handling capabilities of

the vehicle. The steering should operate precisely and
without shimmies, tracking or vibrations. When operated
at low speed and in close quarters doing full turns, the
steering should operate without binding in any spot.

W6001506

Check the compass confirm heading and position

changes while driving. Ensure the compass is moving,
this indicates the GPS is working.

W3005697

23
Group 17 Service Procedures Pre-Delivery Inspection

Check the clutch for proper operation. The clutch should

have smooth operation and engagement when shifting
gears. If equipped with FreedomLine,2 AutoShift3 and
UltraShift transmissions refer to the manufacturer’s
service literature for more information.

Check the transmission for ease of shifting and proper

operation. The lever should move smoothly through the
gear pattern. Listen for unusual noises during shifting.

W4002568

Check the heater and A/C for proper operation. Operate

all controls and run the fan on all speeds.

If the vehicle is equipped with a sleeper cab, check

the function of the A/C and heater unit in the sleeper
compartment.

operation.

Check the engine retarder (exhaust brake) for proper

operation.

Make sure the brake function disengages by:

• Depressing either the accelerator or clutch pedal.

• Engine speed falling below 1200 rpm (1200 r/min).

• Vehicle speed falling below 2 mph (3 km/h).

• Engaging PTO.
