This is one of the most important and ancient sub-shrines under the umbrella of Tirumala Tirupati
Devasthanams located at a distance of about 70 km from Tirupati on Chennai highway.
According to sthala puranams, Lord Brahma made penance for creation of life on the earth. During that
time, Demon Somakaasura had stolen the Vedas from Brahma and hid them under the ocean, which had
consequently obstructed the creation of life on the earth.
Ultimately, Lord Brahma, and other deities brought this incident to the notice of the Lord Maha Vishnu.
The Saviour among the Trinity, Lord Maha Vishnu had taken the guise of a “Mathsya” (Fish) and killed
Somakaasura and restored Vedas to Brahma. The uniqueness of this temple is that the presiding deity
here is the first incarnation among dasavataras of the Lord.
The main deity Veda Narayana Swamy is seen in a standing posture, with his fish-like tail clearly visible,
flanked by Sridevi and Bhudevi on his either sides. Another important feature is that the Sudarshana
Chakra in one of his hands is ready to let loose in an attacking posture.
Sub shrines of Goddess Lakshmi Devi as Vedavalli, Lord Rama and Hanuman can be seen here.
The most interesting fact about this temple is that the Surya Puja performed during the month of March
for five days. During these days (usually between 24th and 28th of March), sun rays travel at a distance
of 360 feet from the temple tower, slowly enter the main threshold and further into the ‘Garbagriha’
and stop at the deity’s feet, navel and finally on crown. As it occurs never again in other parts of the
year, it is considered an astronomical marvel and auspicious.

Temple advisor -About Sri Veda Narayana Swamy Temple
Among many incarnations of Lord Vishnu, only a few temples depicting the earlier incarnations of Lord
Vishnu is available.
The best among these temples are the Sri Veda Narayanaswamy Temple, which is located in
Nagalapuram. Lord Vishnu takes the form of Matsya Avatar(Fish), which is the prime form among the
ten avatars.
This is one and only temple depiciting the Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu.
According to Purana's, the history of Sri Veda Narayanaswamy Temple goes as far as the beginnings of
the Universe.
According to legends, this is the place where Lord Vishnu took the form of a fish to go underwater and
retrieve the Vedas after defeating the demon Somaka.
After defeating the demon the Lord Vishnu, rests here with the same avatar (Matsya), along with
goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi.
Matsya, blessing the people for the rest of the eternity.
Here the Lord takes the Stature of Dushta Nirvahana (world purification) with the Sudarshana Chakra in
prayoga (ready for deployment).
The temple is thronged by thousands of devotees every day, seeking blessings to face and succeeding in
the challenges in their lives.
Sri Veda Narayanaswamy is also a relief from the dosha's concerning financial and Vastu bad effects. It is
also well renowned for relief from skin diseases. Also, it is beleived that those who pray for Growth in
Education, will get their boon fulfilled as he retrived the Vedas from the Demon.
Skin Diseases, Vaastu Dosha and Growth in Education are the prayers rendered at this temple.
According to Purana's, Lord Brahma once took a nap and the Vedas involuntarily slipped out of his
mouth. An Asura known as 'Somaka' lie waiting for this occasion. He immediately stole the Vedas and
went hiding in the depths of the ocean.
To retrieve the Vedas, the Deva's sought the help of Lord Vishnu to retrieve the Vedas and bring the
world back to its original balance.
The Vedas are the vital knowledge required for the creation and running of the universe. With no
further issues, Lord Maha Vishnu, took Mathsya avatar and found the demon Somuka in the depths of
the ocean. After a fight lasting years, the Lord was able to defeat the Asura and retrieve the Veda's.
Thus Lord Vishnu effectively gave back the world its normal cycle and order.
This temple was built during the time of Sri Krishna Devraya. It is said that he named this town as
Nagalapuram in memory of his mother Nagamba.
As Lord took the form of Matsaya to save the Vedas, this temple is called as Veda Naraya Swamy and the
devotees can see many Brahmins sitting a side and reading Vedam.
Interesting fact of this temple is as the Lord here is facing towards west, Sun rays fall on the Lord during
the Sunset (6pm to 6.15pm).
The Interesting factor in this temple is "Sun rays fall at the feet on the first day, on the chest on the
second day and on forehead on the third day. This happens once in a year, 12, 13 and 14th days of
Phalguna Month (Panguni in Tamil)(in the month of March).
Recently while cleaning the temple tirtham (Pond) they found a rare kind of fish in the pond with
different colours.
Many people came to see this miracle as this is the temple dedicated to mathya avataram.

Also it is still not understood whether it is the architectural or astronomical brilliance by our ancestors,
as this has been happening for ages from now.
This event signifies Sun God’s (Surya) Seva to the Lord to warm up his chilled body, as the Lord has been
under water for many years during his war against Somukasura.

Here at Nagalapuram we can see Lord Vishnu in<span style="color: red;"> MATHYAvataram
It is the first of the 10 Avataras(Dasavataram). The presiding deity is Sri VedaNarayana Perumal. The
main deity is Lord Vishnu in the form of Mathya(fish) along with his consorts. Peculiar feature of the idol
is it holds the Sudarsana Chakra in Prayoga i.e ready to release. The main reason for this avatar is to get
back the Vedas stolen by demon.
Sri Veda Narayana Swamy Idol on Goopuram
For Devatas one day completes at the end of one Kalpa. One day at the end of a Kalpa Lord Brahma felt
sleepy. As his eye lids are closed and his mouth opened involuntarily for a yawn, the Vedas slipped out
of his mouth and demon named Somakudu stole them. Devatas prayed Lord Vishnu to get the Vedas
back from the Demon. Vedas are necessary for creation. As we know by Puranas, Pralayam occurs at the
end of every Kalpa and creation is again started by Lord Brahma, it was necessary to collect all the
plants, seeds, herbs and animals so that they would continue to exist in the new creation.
according to Mathya Purana, the king of Dravidas and Devotee of Lord Vishnu, Satyavrata who was later
known as Manu was offering water during Sandya Vandanam. Lord Vishnu in the form of a small fish
came into his hands and pleaded to save its life. He drops it in his Kamandalam. Over night the fish
became too big to be in Kamandalam. By the request of the fish he moved it in to another big bowl, but
soon fish became too big for the vessel also. Then Satyavrata then left the fish in a pond but in no time
the fish grew as large as pond. Satyavrata left it into a lake and fish started growing bigger and bigger. It
went on asking for larger and larger space. Finally he decided to leave it into an ocean, but fish pleaded
not to do so. Satyavrata got doubt how a fish can grow so big in a single day and released it is none
other than Lord Vishnu in the form of fish. He prayed to Lord Vishnu and asked why he took the form of
a fish. Lord Vishnu told him that Pralayam will occur soon and at that time you will see a spacious boat
approaching you and also told him to collect all variety of seeds, accompanied by Seven Saints along
with Serpent Vasuki and other animals.
The fish left for fulfilling its mission. Lord Vishnu in the form of the fish killed Somakudu and brought the
Vedas back and gave them to Lord Brahma to resume the creation at appropriate time. Pralayam started
and ocean began rising. A boat came near them and all of them got into it, the boat was tied to a fish, s
horn using Vasuki as rope. They sailed on the water through out the Pralayam. Thus Vishnu saved the
mankind from dissolution. During this journey Sages and Manu asked Lord Vishnu several questions. The
answers that Lord Vishnu gave form the text ofMATSYA PURANAM
