Please refer to the following quote in answering the given questions below.
“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
- Sir Isaac Newton
1. What do you think Newton has seen?
The phrase is intended to mean that if Newton was able to discover more about the
universe than others, then it was because, either in his own time or earlier, he was working in the
light of discoveries made by fellow scientists. He continues searching, improving, working and
studying things that help him discover more than others. In mathematics, astronomy, physics,
and natural philosophy, he was successful. And yet he wants to know more about things he's
been curious about. He seen further than others because of his hard work and dedication to know
more.
2. Who do you think Newton refers to as giants?
It was basically his fellow scientist who he talked of as a giant. Newton made reference
to the contributions of other researchers. It was their earlier results that paved the way for his
own. Newton continuously worked on their discoveries until he found the real scientific proof for
his theory. This illustrates the reality that all learning is continuous. That all knowledge is based
on what came before it. Even if work done in the past has been said to be wrong, they have still
set it the basis for future scientists to study, improve and strengthen their findings. As of today,
for us to grow and improve more for ourselves, we are researching and learning the contributions
of others. It’s only means that their knowledge or experiences help us to know more. We use that
as our starting point for our independent adventure and think how much more we could do. We
all benefits from what others contribute.
3. What do you think this quote tells you about Newton’s character?
It reflects Newton’s character as genius and respectful for other’s contribution that help
him to achieve his goals. He was able to discover many things in the world of science that help
us to know more about our world. Newton was primarily self-taught and self-trained. He is also
hardworking. It was said that he lived a life of self-discovery and exploration through
commitment, unity of mind and concentration that helped uncover many inventions and
scientific laws. When we think about Newton's success in the fields of mathematics, astronomy,
and physics, it soon becomes obvious that Newton himself was a giant whose wide shoulders
were permanently filled with thousands looking at a distance he had made visible. He became a
giant not from any lonely moment of inspiration, but by joining and interacting with others. He
brought great things into consideration and gave his everything to understand things to the
deepest.
