1.Whang Od, the last tradition tattoo artist of the Kalingas, has devoted her entire life in the art of
tattooing. Do you think she deserves to be the recipient of the National Living Treasure Award?
Explain your answer.
Yes, because as the last traditional Kalinga tattooist, I believe that she is doing something very
significant by continuing on doing her art, she keeping an art form which many scholars believed to be
a thousand years old alive. By doing so she is also preserving a part of our country’s rich culture and
history.
2.In 2012 the Department of Tourism launched its newest campaign to attract more tourists and
visitors in the country with this slogan:’’ It’s more fun in the Philippines,’’ Look at one of the photos
that campaign. Interpret how the indigenous Filipino are represented in this campaign. Should people,
instead of places or events, be the main attraction for foreigners? Express your opinion on the matter.
In the photo the campaign is promoting indigenous Filipino as fun. It is promoting to explore the indigenous
Filipino culture and practices.
I think it’s not necessarily that the people should be the main attraction but more like/ rather the people’s
culture and practices should be given attention and explored more so that in this way not only will the local
people be more engage in keeping their culture and practices alive and promoting it but also at the same they
will be able to earn some income from the foreigners that visits. Besides that the people will get to showcase
their culture and practices the promotion of their best places and events comes along with it. So all in all, it’s a
package; the people, specifically their culture and practices, traditions, the places and events.
3. Imagine that you are the last living descendant of a reputable folk artist. Your grandparent is about to teach
you how the folk art is done because your parents refused to learn it. What would you do?
I would gladly and willingly learn the folk art from my grandparents as the last descendant because I would
want to continue an art form which has been pass down from generation to generation. I would want to
preserve and keep the folk art alive which contains our culture and history.
