Activity 2.16.1 MY VIEW ON SOCIAL CHANGE (10 minutes)

ICT Project intended for Social Change include steps which should make things doable.
They are as follows:

Step 1: Planning and conceptualizing

Step 2: Developing
Step 3: Release ad Promotion
Step 4: Maintenance

[EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY 11] Page 22 of 85

In this lesson, we’ll focus on the first step: Planning and conceptualizing ICT Project
for Social Change.

Guide Questions:
1. What are some sample advocacies for social change in the community?
2. What is it that you want to change in your community?
3. Is there something that some people ignore because either they have become
accustomed to taking things for granted, or because they think that things cannot be
changed?
4. What is it that you feel strongly about the academic track that you think can contribute
something to create achange?

B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson

This particular lesson is intended for learners to understand and apply how to plan and
conceptualize the creation of ICT project for social change. Preparation of a concept paper with
practical examples will also be considered as an integral part of the planning and conceptualizing
stage in ICT Project for Social change.

C. Presenting examples/instances of the lesson

Some best examples of advocacies or projects include, but are not limitedto:
1. anti-drugcampaigns;
2. youth election volunteer mobilization;
3. animal welfare andrights;
4. environmental conservation and action;
5. contemporary ICT issues such as cyberbullying, copyright infringement, green
technology, and internetaddiction.

Planning an ICT project involves the following tasks:

• Conceptualizing your project
• Researching on available data about your topic
• Setting deadlines and meetings
• Assigning people to various tasks
• Finding a web or blog host
• Creating a site map for your website
• Listing down all applications that you need
including web apps

What is social change?

Social change involves alteration of the social order of a society. It may include changes in
social institutions, social behaviors or social relations.

profound and long-term consequences for society. Well known examples of such change have
resulted from social movements in civil rights, women's rights, and LBGTQ rights, to name just
a few.

D. Discussing new concepts

Planning a Social Change Campaign:

Before starting a project or campaign, you should be able to do the necessary paperwork better
known as a Concept Paper. This allows experts to see if your project is doable over the time frame
that was given and if it is significant enough to be made into reality.

Concept Paper is a document used to convince a panel of potential funders to help a product,
program, or service become a reality.

Five Elements of a Concept Paper:

1.Introduction
2.Purpose
3.Description
4.Support
5.Contact Information

Introduction
This includes your mission and vision and a
brief introduction of your project /
campaign.

Purpose
This includes the reason why the project / campaign is worth your sponsor’s time, effort and
money.

Description
This includes all the necessary information about the project. It involves the website/s or page you
are going to produce and the purpose of each and how they work in unison.

Support
This contains the budget needed for the project, though some concept papers do not specify any
amount requested from the sponsor.

Contact Information
This includes information on how the group can be contacted such as phone number, email
account etc.

Your project/campaign must meet the SMART criteria:

S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Attainable / Achievable
R – Realistic / Relevant
T – Time-bounded

not only limited to the following:
[EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY 11] Page 25 of 85
 Infographics
 Blogs
 Social media pages
 Websites

To be able to succeed in the implementation of your ICT Project, it’s the team head or
project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, securing and managing
resources for the successful completion of a task for project to meet specific goals and
objectives.

Infographics (also mentioned in our previous quarter in Lesson 6) are visual

presentations of information that use the elements of design to quickly communicate an
idea. Good Infographics attract readers and are viewed where more easily than long texts
article.

Principles of Visual
Message, Designed Using
Infographics
Presenting survey data -
infographics are highly useful in
presenting result gathered from
survey data.

Simplifying a complicated
concept - the core purpose of
an infographics is to simplify a
complex idea which makes
them great educational tools,
especially when presenting an
overview of a topic instead of
an in-depth analysis.

Explaining how things work – in

addition, to simplifying complex
ideas, infographics are often
used to reveal the mechanics
behind how objects work.

Comparison– when drawing comparisons, infographics help organize similarities and differences
by visually creating parallels that complement the information being presented.

PRINCIPLES IN CREATING AN INFOGRAPHICS:

Be Creative– you can use the combination of text, shapes and images to present your message in a
creative way.

Be Unique– your message must be something people can relate to, but it must be presented in a
unique way to attract the viewers’ attention. Present it in a surprising and exciting way to draw
attention.

Be Simple– presenting a simple yet elegant design will attract more attention that cluttered
elements that may bore the audience. Too many colors and pictures may be hard to understand
and distract the readers from getting the message.

Use Graphics and Visuals – You can
illustrate your point with pictures,
typography, and colors.

ICTs and the larger social

transformation
The Internet was developed as
a decentralized network. All of its
intelligence, and thus power, was
supposed to be at the end-points
and not in the center, or in the
network. For the Internet to then
have become a major ally, if not
the powerhouse, of the
centralizing and hegemonic
processes of economic
globalization is somewhat
surprising. Here, we briefly visit
how ICTs are triggering major structural changes in society, from the viewpoint of the
project of progressive social transformation.

F. Developing Mastery

Activity 2.16.2 MY CONCEPT ABOUT (15 minutes)

Create a concept paper by applying the 5 elements of concept paper and SMART criteria on a
sheet of paper.

You may give your own or choose one of the following topics:
1. Animal cruelty
2. Energy insufficiency
3. Human rights violation
4. Pre-marital sex
5. Early pregnancy
[EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY 11] Page 27 of 85
6. Drug addiction
7. Population explosion
8. Extrajudicial killing (criminal injustice)
9. Women empowerment
10. Cyberbullying
The following is the criteria for rating your concept paper:
- Persuasiveness – 20 points
- Content of the project – 20 points
- Over-all Presentation – 10 points
-------------------
Total – 50 points

G. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Activity 2.16.3 MY ICT PROJECT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE (20 minutes)

prototype could take the form of a printed infographic or even hand-drawn on a poster-
sized material. (size: Long bondpaper 8.5 inches X 13 inches)
